Health IT Dashboard:Story

• I saw an excellent presentation at the recent Government BIG DATA Symposium by Dr. Julia Skapik, MD, MPH, Medical Officer for Dr. Kevin Larsen, Medical Director, Meaningful Use, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, entitled "HHS Perspectives on Health IT and Big Data" Slides.

• I found slides contained two URLs of interest:– NLM Value Set Authority Center (VSAC); and– The Health IT Dashboard.

• I found the use of Flash for the actual dashboard to be cumbersome and decided to re-create it using Spotfire on the 13 spreadsheets at the Data Sets and Documentation Web Page, plus the Data Catalog spreadsheet, which I recreated as part of the Knowledge Base I built for my data science audit. I found a slight mismatch between the 5 topic names in the HHS Health IT Dashboard and the 5 topic names in the Data Sets and Documentations. There were 31 individual data sets used in all including two Shape files for state and country boundary files.

• The Spotfire Dashboard has 7 Tabs as shown in the screen captures in the next slides.• I hope that you agree that Spotfire is better than Flash for the Health IT Dashboard.• There is more data that could be included in this or other dashboards and more advance

statistical analyses could also be done in Spotfire on the data sets.
