Second Sunday of Lent
Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma
Second Sunday of Lent | Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma 2
Personalmente, he acordado crecer en santidad.
(Lc 21:19).

Dealing With Temptations and Trials
We are in now Lent and as ‘good’ Catholics, we are full of good intentions to renounce our sins and give our lives to Christ. Personally, I resolved to grow in holiness. But we know that it’s easily said than done. Experience teaches us that good intentions are not enough. Like the déjà vu of New Year resolutions, we easily give up in the face of temptations and trials. Yet there’s nothing more beneficial in spiritual life than tests. St. James says to us:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:1-4
Temptations and trials strengthen our faith. They help us to persevere, humble ourselves and be more compassionate towards those who are struggling with their own weaknesses.
Note: there is a difference between a temptation and a trial. During a temptation we have a choice. We are free to fall for it or resist it. Last Sunday, we heard about how Jesus resisted his own temptations (Mt 4:1-11). Trials, on the other hand, are about things beyond our control, including illnesses, accidents, misfortunes, others’ misbehaviors and so on. We do not have control over these things, except our reactions to them.
But whether we are going through temptations or trials, we can overcome by looking up to Jesus. He is our strength and our model. There are five important lessons we can learn from Jesus. 1) Prayer: to overcome our temptations and stand strong during trials, we MUST be prayerful because “kneeling Christians are victorious Christians.” As Jesus said, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mt 26:41). 2) Self-denial: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself…”, says Jesus (Lk 9:23). Self-denial is refusing to overindulge or aggrandize one’s self. We do this by fasting, eating and drinking with moderation or saying ‘no’ to wastefulness or materialism. Note: whatever we do must be painful or it’s not self-denial. 3) Avoidance of the occasion of sin: “If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off…” (Mt 5:30). What are your triggers? What are the things or occasions that often lead you to sin? Avoid those things and occasions. 4) Knowledge: remember, “Increased knowledge will always bring increased efficiency” because knowledge is power. Know your faith. Know Jesus and his teachings in the bible. 5) Perseverance: We will all be knocked down several times, but we must never give up. Be steadfast in your faith, be patient with yourself and know that we are not perfect. Remember, “By your endurance you will gain your lives” (Lk 21:19).

I love my life! In the past week and a half I have gone from a mission trip in Jamaica, to leading worship for a retreat, and ending today with teaching our year 1 students about Salvation History and how Jesus welcomes back to the family no matter what, like the Prodigal son. It is a crazy whirlwind but it is worth it in ways that I can’t even begin to describe! I am a servant of God and wouldn’t have my life be any different and I think that is a concept that a lot of Christians forget or choose not to do. We are called to Know, Love, and Serve God in our lives yet it seems like we struggle with all 3, but especially serving God. We are given so many tools and examples in scripture of serving God that really when you think about it, it’s not that hard. So when was the last time you served God? You don’t have to be insane like me although in all honesty it’s really fun so maybe we should all be a little crazy, but it can be done in small and simple ways. So dust off your bibles and read Matthew 25:31-46 and start there with how to serve God, trust me it is worth it. Upcoming Events: March 8-Year 1 Class March 11-Youth Group March 12-Edge
YOUTH MINISTRY MINISTERIO JUVENIL [email protected]

Winter Cold and Flu Season
You are reminded to use common sense in your participation at mass and the reception of Holy Communion from the chalice during the annual cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been
exposed to a virus, you should refrain from partaking of the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. In the same way, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace (or during the Lord’s prayer). A smile and a heartfelt, "Peace be with you," should suffice. Likewise, if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace or receiving Holy Communion from the communal chalice for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so. All of us must be aware of such sensitive matters in the intimate life of the Christian community and we should expect that some will refrain from participation in the liturgy or the sign of peace and the communal chalice out of care for our wellbeing and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety.

DID YOU KNOW?
Talk about chat room dangers with your teen
Online chat rooms are great places for people to connect over shared interests and ideas. But for young children and teenagers who may not be internet-savvy, they’re also a great place for predators to lay groundwork. In a chat room, anyone can be whomever they want — and predators hide behind personas of friends.
Talk to your child about online safety rules, such as never agreeing to meet in person and never providing personal and identifying information. Review chats frequently to ensure that your child is engaging in safe conversations. For more tips on chat room safety, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Exposing the Dangers of Internet Chat Rooms” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
