This week, we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. In the Gospel, on the Second Sunday of Lent, the Church reads about the Transfiguration of Christ. The inclusion of this Gospel account at the beginning of Lent is an ancient liturgical practice in the Church. We may wonder and ask the question, therefore, why? Why does the Church include the Gospel account of the Transfiguration of Jesus at the beginning of Lent? The answer, the Gospel account of the Transfiguration is meant for the believer to focus on the meaning and purpose of both the season of Lent and the Christian life.

Recently, I read about some very interesting Lenten traditions practiced by Eastern Christians, i.e. Orthodox Christians and Eastern Rite Catholics. In the Eastern Churches, Orthodox and Catholic, the First Week of the Great Lent is called “Clean Week.” The focus of the week is to enter fully the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving with fervor, to set the pace for the forty days by running the first lap with

vigorous effort. Strict fasting is encouraged, along with frequent prayer, and alms-giving. To help understand the spiritual significance of beginning Lent with “Clean Week,” for many Orthodox and Eastern Catholics, the actual houses of believers are cleaned and stripped of excess, a symbol of the interior dynamic of the week and the very essence of Lent. The point of Lent is to clean our house. Cleaning our house, our physical dwelling place, reminds us of the need to clean our true house: our body and soul. During the forty days of Lent we are all called to enter into a holy struggle against our disordered passions and weaknesses, so that we can become more fitting vessels for the very life and light of God to dwell within, making us new. The intensity at the beginning of Lent is meant to assist the believer in cultivating the proper disposition needed to achieve the desired end of the whole forty days of Lent, ongoing conversion of life, and a new way of living.

We read in the Gospel of Matthew, this year, “and his clothes became white as light.” Why would the Evangelist include a description of Christ’s clothing? Christ’s garments and appearance during the Transfiguration show Peter, James, and John (and all of us), Jesus’ true glory. It reveals and makes manifest Jesus’ divinity. Moreover, the sight of Jesus’ dazzling clothes is meant to be an inspiration for all of His followers. Christ wishes to share His glory with all of us. We all can be transfigured and changed to be like the Lord Himself, if we open ourselves the grace of God and allow the grace of God to sanctify us. The call goes out every Lent for us to clean house, to be rid of all sin and entanglements, which hold us back from reclaiming God’s life that He desires for each one of us. The Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are meant to help transfigure us, to clean our bodily house, to make us into the likeness of Christ. In his sermon on this passage of the Transfiguration in the Gospel of Matthew, St. John Chrysostom writes, “therefore, let us lay aside our filthy garments, let us put on the armor of light, and the glory of God will wrap us around.” The Transfiguration of Christ is presented to us at the beginning of Lent to inspire us and to give us goal.

Congratulations to the children of our school and Religious Education program who celebrated their First Reconciliation on March 4. Next Saturday, March 18, we will celebrate St. Joseph, our patron saint. Our 5 pm Mass will be a trilingual Mass, and following Mass, we will have a multi ethnic dinner. Tickets will be sold at the door. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate our great patron. Please pray for all who are preparing to receive Sacraments this Easter. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Page 3: March 12, 2017 512045 - St Joseph Parish, Summit · 2017. 3. 11.

Vivat Jesus! ¡Viva Jesús!

Przypada dzisiaj II Niedziela Wielkiego Postu.

W czasie tych czterdziestu dni, podejmujemy walkę z własnymi namiętnościami i słabościami. Dzięki temu będzie mogło w nas zamieszkać światło i życie Boga. Zapraszamy wszystkich do wspólnego świętowania. Pamiętajcie w modlitwie o wszystkich tych, którzy w tegoroczną Wielkanoc będą przyjmować Sakramenty. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie módl się za nami.

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
