UNCHAINED Fashion Show Returns to Troy

In recognizing National Slavery Prevention & Human Trafficking Awareness Month, on January 28, we will be hosting an awareness event featuring Not For Sale, an anti-trafficking NGO based in San Francisco. UNCHAINED will also present their trademark fashion show using local models. Females interested in participating should come to the casting call on Wednesday, December 14, at 5:30 pm at First Place. No experience necessary, ages 10 and up recommended. In September 2015, five youth from Troy First participated in the fashion show, but UNCHAINED will need more models with this new collection. Any questions can be emailed to UNCHAINED at [email protected].

Year End Giving Reminder We are in the final stretch of 2016, and the giving that comes in each week this month is critically important for the Troy FUMC to meet our required expenses. Historically, we receive almost 15% of our total year giving in December, and with a total

budget of over $676,000, a 1% variance can make a difference in whether we finish in the black or not. Since December 31st is a Sunday, donations either need to be in the office by Friday afternoon on the 29th, or in the offering plate on the 31st. If you would like to make a donation using a stock or mutual fund transfer, contact the Treasurer, Brett Bogan, at [email protected].

Thank You!!! Dear Nurture Committee, Thank you for the wonderful card and Walmart gift card. The card comforts and reassures me that all of you are keeping me in your prayers. The fact that you are wishing me well brightens my day. Once again, thank you. Most sincerely, Matthew Larson What a delightful array of cards and remembrances I have received! Thank you for your encouraging words and for your prayers. How inspiring it was to listen to Renee, Kendra, and Michelle Kovacs, Alyssa Knapinski, and Carly West, sing carols on Sunday evening. As Pastor Bob says, “If you are looking for a church, you have found one right here.” Mary Davis Thank you for the poinsettia we received from the church and also our thanks to Lynn & Rick Matson for deliveryin it to our home to enjoy. It was so appreciated. Jim & Pearl James

Valley British Brass Band First United Methodist Church

December 12, 2016, 7pm

The Ohio Valley British Brass Band was founded in February 1992 by Francis Laws and the late Ed Nickol, and since January 2009 has been under the leadership of music director Michael Gallehue. The 45-member ensemble is comprised of professional musicians, active and retired educators at the secondary and collegiate levels, students, and selected brass and percussion players from the Ohio Valley. The band’s mission is to perform a variety of worthwhile and engaging literature while providing an opportunity for the area’s finest brass players to participate in a quality musical ensemble. Since its inception the OVBBB has played extensively throughout southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky, including featured performances with the Cincinnati Pops and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestras. The OVBBB has also performed for the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference, the American School Band Directors Association State Convention, and was the keynote performing ensemble at the Wisconsin Brass Band Festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The band is currently celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary season and is planning a concert on May 7, 2017 in Dayton featuring guest composer/conductor Stephen Bulla to commemorate the occasion. Over the past twenty-five years the OVBBB has been joined by other guest performers of local, national, and international acclaim, including trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzuti and John Philip Sousa IV, great grandson of the famous American composer and bandmaster. The OVBBB is pleased to once again perform at First United Methodist Church in Troy on Monday evening, December 12, at 7:00 p.m. For its program the band has selected music ranging from marches by Philip Sparke and Robert Jager to a variety of pieces appropriate for the holiday season. Selections include an energetic overture based on themes by Sir Arthur Sullivan, Paul Maybery’s arrangement of selections from Bizet’s “Carmen,” featuring euphonium soloists Francis Laws and Brent Hayden; a setting of “The Birthday of a King,” especially written for the OVBBB by staff arranger Tad Stewart; holiday medleys of “A Most Wonderful Christmas” and “Christmas Joy;” the Gabrieli “Canzon a 12,” and Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” arranged for three antiphonal brass choirs; and a major work for brass band by Stephen Bulla, “Beecher Variations,” based on the hymn tune “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.”

Chancel Choir Anthem “Run to Bethlehem”

Words by Music Arranged by Mary McDonald Pamela Martin PAT-A-PAN by Bernard de la Monnoye, 1641-1728

Shepherd, wake up from your sleep,

Run to Bethlehem; Rise up from your flock of Sheep!

Run to Bethlehem! In the manger you will find The Lamb for all mankind!

Shepherd, do not be afraid,

Run to Bethlehem; Christ, the Lord, is born this day!

Run to Bethlehem!... Shepherd hear the news we bring, Run to Bethlehem!

“Glory be to God,” we sing;

Run to Bethlehem!...

Shepherd, search and find the Lamb,

Run to Bethlehem!

Leave your flock of ewes and rams,

Run to Bethlehem!...
