Old Testament

THE BOY KING JOASH

2 Kings 12: 1-

Joash was only seven years old when

he became King of Judah. His

grandmother Athalia was a wicked

queen. She tried to kill all the royal

family. But a faithful family member

Josheba hid the one-year-old Joash

for six years. At age seven, he was

given into the care of the priest

Jehoiada. With the temple guards to

help, they staged a coronation for the

boy king. He reigned for 37 years.

During his reign he did what was right

in the sight of God, trying to convince

the people to the one true God

instead of the nature gods of their

neighbors.

Because of the constant wars in the

region, life was very difficult for all.

There was another king named Joash.

He was the king of Israel (the tribes in

the north). This Joash went to visit

Elisha, where he saw a vision of the

chariots and horsemen of Israel.

.

New Testament

THE AGONY AND THE ARREST

Mark 14: 32-52

At the Passover meal that Jesus

celebrated with his disciples, he

transformed this ancient celebration

into a living memorial of his own

sacrifice of his Body and Blood, which

we still celebrate today as the

Eucharist. He took all his disciples into

the garden of Gethsemani, asking

them to pray. He took Peter, James,

and John farther into the garden.

He was in agony about the cruel death

he was to die. Three times the

disciples fell asleep. He finally woke

them because Judas Iscariot was

coming with a crowd of people armed

with swords and clubs, who had been

sent by the chief priests and elders.

Judas identified Jesus with a greeting

and an embrace. One of the

bystanders drew a sword and cut off

the ear of the high priest’s servant. A

young boy (possibly Mark) ran away

terrified. All of the disciples ran away,

leaving Jesus to face his hour of

sacrifice alone.

MY FAITH

Catholic Marriage

The Catechism of

the Catholic Church

tells us all about

Catholic Marriage.

(ccc 1621-1642).

It’s not just a time

when two people

say they love each

other and want to

celebrate. It’s much

more than that, a

picture of the love

that God has for his

people. The priest or

deacon receives the

consent of the man

and woman and he

gives the blessing

of the Church.

Before marriage the

couple are prepared

for this great event

by taking classes

where they learn

about God’s will for

marriage, a lifelong

covenant between a

man and a woman

who agree to

worship God and

raise the children

God gives them.

KNIGHTS CORNER FOUR PRINCIPLES: CHARITY UNITY FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Fraternity – Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do the good works of individual Knights, who gave more than 75.6 million service hours in 2017, illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy. Last Monday November 26, 2018, Father Wichert celebrated a Memorial Mass for all Knights and their wives who have passed away in the last 43 years from our council. OUR UP COMING EVENTS:

• THIS SUNDAY DEC. 2, 2018 from 9:00 am to Noon • Coats for Kids- we will be handing out 172 coats to boys and girls who have been selected from local schools. • Baker Angels- wives of Knights will be baking cookies for local First Responders and Military Personnel at Joint Base Lewis McCord.

• Business Meeting Wednesday December 5th at 7:00 pm.

• 4th Degree Dinner/Meeting on Wednesday December 12th at 6:00 pm.

• Check out our Domestic Church Kiosk Booklets in both English and Spanish. ALL BOOKLETS ARE FREE!

MALAWI MOMENTS The 19th of November, 2018, we launched the St. Brendan Bowl feed-ing program at Lungwena. We thank God for the success of this initia-tive. Present during the launch were members of St. Joseph Namalaka Parish in their various capacities, which includes the Pastor, the Cate-chist, a Seminarian on Pastoral experience, the Chairperson of the Par-ish Council who chairs the Committee too, and some of the Parishion-ers who are in the Committee. Apart from them, we had in attendance the Group Village headman and other chiefs within the catchment area, the PTA representative, the School Committee representative and the mother group responsible for cooking the porridge. The com-munity has welcomed the project whole heartedly and are ready to contribute in their respective capacities for the success of the project. In my remarks, I thanked them for the positive attitude as the project will benefit their own children. I did emphasize that the work they are to do is voluntary and there is no money attached to it as such they should not expect anything. The community requested me to thank you for the kind gesture extended to them regardless of the race, religion and other factors. During the launch, it was raining and they expressed their concern if a shelter for the cooking would be constructed as soon as possible since it was being done on an open air and the women were soaked in the rains. We assured them that if they get bricks and sand, we can assist with iron sheets for the shelter as we felt that it was a genuine concern. You will be kept updated on any activity that is to happen. Thanking you always for your kindness. May the good Lord bless all those working tirelessly in raising funds for the success of this project. Long live St. Brendan Parish, long live St. Joseph Parish. Fr. Davie, pastor, St. Joseph's in Namalaka.

SAINT BRENDAN CHURCH GIVING TREE Saint Brendan Parish Giving Tree is a yearly tradition that supports multiple different agencies throughout our community. Many of these agencies rely on the influx of donations they receive at this time of year. The giving trees are up in the church Narthex now with lots of tags for a variety of different needs. On top of the individual tags on the trees we are also collecting the following: New toys or teen gift items that can be used for Mathew House and Sibling House general Christ-mas stores (new only please); new or gently used blankets or sleeping bags for Noel House and Francis House; new and gently used Coats any size. These will be used for the Knights of Columbus coats for kids program, Youth Care and Union Gospel Mission and Francis House; new socks (adult). Please make sure gently used items are clean. Items can be dropped off in the church Narthex. School families may drop items at the school drop off box but if you have a larger donation it is helpful if you drop it in the Narthex. Please make sure tagged items come back with the tag attached. We are also still looking for delivery drivers. You would need to be available to pick up items at the church around noon on December 16th. Some deliveries would need to be made that day, others can be made later that week. ***We have a strong need for a driver to deliver a large donation to the King County Juvenile Detention Center on December 16th after distribution. If you have any questions, would like to be a driver, or are interested in taking on a leadership role please contact Sarah at [email protected].

MERCIFUL LOVE CONNECTION In collaboration with the Refuge of Mercy in Santiago Chile, The Merciful Love Connection funds programs that help the adolescent mother embrace life with her child. The Merciful Love Connection promotes awareness of the Refuge and gathers resources and

financial support to meet the needs of the Refuge. Thank you for all the years you have supported the Refuge with your donations. Our mission is still the same: to fund programs that help these young women embrace life with their children and meet the needs of the Refuge. Please help us fulfill our mission by taking a tag from the Giving Tree.

&

ONLINE GIVING

Every person’s finances

and family situation is

different. Jesus makes it

clear that it matters not

how much one gives, but

that it is planned,

calculated, at least

somewhat sacrificial (see

Luke 24:1-4), and not

simply from what is

“leftover” at the end of the

month. We propose the

tithe (10%) as the ideal

every family can consider

working towards. This

means taking steps to give

5% to one’s parish, and

5% to other charities or

causes you have personal

passion for. You can

register online at

www.saintbrendan.org

and click on the link

“Online Registration/New

“Be on guard,” Jesus warns in today’s Gospel, “lest your spirits become

bloated with indulgence.” Let us heed His warning and follow the advice of

St. Paul, conducting ourselves in a way pleasing to God,

overflowing with love for one another.
