Urgent need — Can you help? NO SCHEDULED ADORERS FOR

SAT. 8 PM

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the pivotal moment in the Civil Rights movement, the 1963 March on Washington, at which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. For those who have never been denied things based upon our race, it is impossible for us to fully fathom the hurt caused by segregation – a hurt that is still being healed. We still have many African-Americans alive today who remember living with separate bathrooms, water fountains, seating in public spaces, transportation, even churches and more, where it was not just “not allowed” but often illegal for black citizens to use or sit in a “white” area.

Much has been accomplished, but still more needs to be done. In some cases dislike for people of other races has merely shifted to those of other nationalities. We must take a long, honest look at ourselves and even within our parish to see where change must occur, beginning with the personal conversion of our own hearts based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we profess to believe. We truly want to make present even now St. John’s vision of the Church Triumphant in the Book of Revelation: “I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from

every nation, race, people, and tongue” (Rev. 7:9). After all, the Holy Mass makes present not only the Sacrifice of the Cross, but also the eternal, heavenly liturgy: “Blessed are those called to the Supper of the Lamb.” In the words of our Bishops, “We also must join with one another rooted in infinite hope and, in light of what faith teaches, work to advance and fulfill the dream” (Statement On The 50th

Anniversary Of The March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom, USCCB, 2013).

Finally, this coming Sunday, September 8th is not merely Labor Day weekend but also the Birthday (Nativity) of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although liturgically it, of course, gives way to the Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection, we will still commemorate the day after the 8:30 am Mass in honor of our Blessed Mother. See below.

Yours in Christ, Father Wilson

Sunday, September 8th – Come commemorate the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary after the 8:30 AM Mass with a special cake along with our usual coffee and doughnuts.

Also, bring any religious items to be blessed. Please place the items marked with your name on the table at the front

of St. Angela Hall with a statue of Mary. Father will bless them at the end of the 8:30 Mass.

Happy Birthday, Mary!

Presented by Lighthouse Catholic Youth

It is through the Sacrament of Confirmation that a Catholic is fully initiated into the Church. Why then do so many newly confirmed Catholics never come back? In this talk, Fr. Mike Schmitz addresses this concerning trend in the Catholic Church with honesty, energy, and humor. Focusing on the true nature of Confirmation, Fr. Mike challenges ALL Catholics to see this sacrament not as a "graduation" from the Church, but as a commissioning by the Holy Spirit to go out into the world and proclaim the Gospel.

" I wish I had heard this talk before I was confirmed." Chris – LA

" Amazing! Fr. Schmitz has powerful insights into such a beautiful

sacrament." Marian - OH
