THE ARCHEONET PROJECT

www.archeonet.be

* first news portal about archaeology and heritage in Flanders

* website launched in February 2005

* voluntary initiative: no funding, no institutional affiliation

* virtual meeting platform for archaeologists, heritage professionals and the public

* currently > 1000 unique visitors/day

THE ARCHEONET PROJECT

www.archeonet.be

* archaeological news blog: articles, events, RSS feeds...

* powered by the free Wordpress software www.wordpress.org

* advantages:

o interactivity and 'instant publishing'

o 'collaborative authoring'

o collaborators don't need any technical knowledge

A FIRST SPIN-OFF

www.opgraven.be * launched in January 2006

* integration of archaeological information with cartographical data and satellite imagery

* visitors able to zoom, click and drag in real time

* markers indicate the locations of the excavations

* info windows contain:

o a picture

o a summary of the results of the excavation

o a hyperlink to a more in-depth article

Page 7: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

ERF-GOED.BE

www.erf-goed.be

* aim = to make a similar website with photographs of protected heritage in Flanders (and Brussels)

* several reasons:

o available pictures often useless because of copyright restrictions

o quality of the available pictures often not good enough (small size / compressed)

o they do not always show the current situation ~ decay / restoration

o stimulate people to find interesting monuments and sites in their environment

Page 8: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

Outline

* problem: the list of protected heritage counts 10.000+ items

* not possible with Google Maps > need to adopt another approach

* use the possibility of 'geotagging' in Flickr: www.flickr.com

Page 9: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

Outline

GEOTAGGING

* adding geographical metadata to all kinds of media (websites, RSS feeds, images...)

* usually as 'latitude' and 'longitude' coordinates, sometimes also 'altitude' or toponyms

* can help users to find a variety of location-specific information

* systems based on tags, or hardware tools (e.g. cameras with built-in GPS receivers)

Page 10: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

Outline

GEOTAGGING

* geographical coordinates can easily be retrieved through the use of an on-line 'geocoder' (e.g. www.batchgeocode.com) or Google Earth (earth.google.com), or even dedicated webservices, such as CRAB

Page 11: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

ERF-GOED.BE

* the website was launched in May 2006

* visitors are stimulated to send their best heritage pictures

* tags, coordinates, descriptions... are added

* all photographs are distributed with a Creative Commons license

* people can easily find the images they are looking for

"Web 2.0 is an attitude not a technology"

"It’s about enabling and encouraging participation through open applications and services. By open I mean technically open with appropriate APIs but also, more importantly, socially open, with rights granted to use the content in new and exciting contexts."

(Ian Davis, Internet Alchemy)

AN OPEN APPROACH

A DYNAMIC APPROACH

In the Erf-goed.be project the digital image collection is considered as a dynamic entity: not only the result, but also the creation process, is important:

A DYNAMIC APPROACH

WEB 2.0 AS A TOOL FOR CIVIL SOCIETY

* several voluntary initiatives resulted in very valuable heritage resources (e.g. inventory of mills, inventory of world war relics)

* Erf-goed.be was initiated because a good (governmental) portal site with photographs of all listed heritage was lacking

* this fact was also recognized by the Flemish Heritage Institute:

"Grote hiaten in [onze] databank zijn het ontbrekende fotomateriaal, gebrek aan actuele adressen of kadasternummers en het ontbreken van tekstmateriaal. [...] Een private,

interactieve website die aan het gebrek aan beeldmateriaal tegemoet tracht te komen, is www.erf-goed.be." (Onderzoeksbalans, December 2008)

* Web 2.0 technologies were very suitable for this 'civil society' initiative

Page 29: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

Outline

WEB 2.0 AS A TOOL FOR CIVIL SOCIETY

* the official Inventory of Built Heritage in Flanders was improved and more (governmental) data became available online

Page 30: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

WEB 2.0 AS A TOOL FOR CIVIL SOCIETY

governmental and voluntary initiatives can be complementary!

Page 31: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

EVALUATING OUR STRATEGY

* > 6500 pictures are already available

* ca. 200 people contributed to the website

* the chosen approach met our expectations:

o no budget needed

o time-efficient: building the website only took a couple of days (nights)

o no technical background or programmning knowledge needed

o intuitive user interface, suitable for non-technical users

o the tools are constantly being improved by their developers

o the advantage of Flickr is that the service is well-known to the public

Page 32: DISH2009 - Erf-goed.be

Outline

SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT

* Web 2.0 applications have a large potential for the heritage sector (and certainly for civil society initiatives)

* an open and dynamic approach has important advantages (in many cases)

* focus on content, not on technology - it will change anyway

* put the content where the people are (<> trying to attract the people to your content)

* don't expect too much of user generated content

* one should keep in mind copyright issues and 'sustainability'
