Board Approves Asking Voters to Pass a Bond Facilities: Help us Imagine! Dear Parents and Community Members, On December 18, 2017, the Board of Trustees heard a presentation by the Facilities Committee Consultant Nick Salmon on the committees recom- mendations for the future improvements to the K-12 campus. They also heard from Dan McGee a consultant that has worked with the district be- fore and could act as the Project Manager. After hearing from members of the public present at the meeting, the Board voted 5-0 to ask the voters to pass a bond. A date for the election has not been set but it should be sometime in the fall of 2018. The last building project the district complet- ed was in 1992. The Facilities Committee started the process last February with a public meeting to get facility needs input. They then meet over the last three months to gather information on the history of the campus, how best to deliver a variety of instruction for all student s needs, and what the future of education will look like to meet all students needs for the next 25 years. The Facilities Committee will continue to have planning meetings that the public will be invited to attend and participate in the process. Infor- mation will continue to be posted on the Districts webpage, https://www.florence.k12.mt.us. If you would like to volunteer to be on the committee to help move this process forward please contact me. When you receive a survey notice by email please fill it out. Please come to a planning meeting, even if you cannot be on a committee. Improving our facilities benefits our students and our community! Bud Scully Superintendent Dear Parents and Community Members, Throughout the year, staff members and par- ents have talked to me about campus safety concerns. One thing that has come up often is students on campus when they are not sup- posed to be here. We have had students using the weight room or gyms without supervision, students dropped off before the buildings open on school days, and students in the buildings at night or weekends because they know what door they can force open. Please remind your child that they may go to the Old Gym in the morning for breakfast, which starts at 7:45 am. They should not be in the hallways until 8:00 am unless they are meeting with a staff member. Students should never be in the building at night or on the weekends when there is no scheduled school activities. If you have a question or concern regarding your childs education or safety please send me an email, [email protected], or call me at 273-6751. Local sixth grader travels out of state to bring home a Championship

Florence Carlton student Autumn Sutton recently traveled to Salt Lake City Utah to partic-ipate and compete in the “Best in The West” futurity, where she showed her weanling filly “Playgirl N Pearls” to a futurity Champion-ship in the youth divi-sion. Autumn earned a bronze trophy and a check for her efforts. (pictured is Autumn and her horse “Playgirl N Pearls”

The Outdoor Classroom is alive and, … well….. The drought, wind, and all that comes with that has taken a bit of toll on our wonderful outdoor learning space. Snags, old logs, and underbrush can be a habitat, cover, or food for living things. It is important that we maintain the naturalness of the OC, yet we need to make sure it is a safe learning environment for our students. This summer the fire crew on campus felled an unhealthy tree. When we came back in August the tree was down with a piece cut out for the pathway. This fall Cody Thomas came and helped cut up the trunk so that it could be removed. All the cut wood will be available to the community. The tree damaged some of the fencing surrounding the class-room which we hope to repair soon. The black cottonwoods support a host of birds and animals, but they are messy trees at times. We will be trimming and removing the dangerous trees soon. The amount of ground water and precipitation has changed over the years. We hope the cottonwoods will hang in there! Fire mitigation is another concern. Our community is very aware of the fires of summer. With the amount of trees and brush, the Outdoor Classroom will need more work to make the area more resistant to fire. We hope to replant some of the trees and bushes that have been removed as well as repair any tables, fences or benches that have been damaged. Topsoil, plants, gravel for the path, watering requirements for the new plants, and revamping the west entrance are high priorities. Many teachers utilize this learning space with their students. In the next few months we hope to share those learning events with our community. Look for our news in the Falcon View! --The Outdoor Classroom Committee

Thank you to everyone who participated in the “Florence Strong” Community Potluck! On Decem-ber 8th, over one hundred people gathered to share a meal and give thanks for the strength of our commu-nity. Fire season challenged all of us, and everyone pitched in to help friends and neighbors. Our close-ness as a community is an important part of who we are, and the potluck was meant to celebrate our strength during a very challenging time. Along with great food, we had entertainment! While people ate and visited, Amy Smart played Christmas carols on the piano, and after dinner, several students played music to celebrate the season. Thank you Ashley and Sierra Koerner for your lovely duets, and everyone else who shared their musical talents! We even had a visit from Santa, who was welcomed by everyone, but especially the children! (You can see Santa at “Holly Jolly Santa From Montana” on Face-book. He was incredible!) This was such a great opportunity to meet new people and visit with those who rarely make it into the school. We hope to have another gathering near the end of February, so please watch for an announce-ment! Thank you all for coming. We truly are “Florence Strong”!

Silent Auction to Support the McNair Family

Jennie McNair is a name many in the community know and love. Jennie and her family have helped and supported countless others through the years and it is time to pay it forward as Jennie is undergoing treatment for colon cancer and expenses are adding up quickly. If you have a knack for baking, an item worthy of donating, or just time to volunteer, please consider helping make a silent auction a huge success. On January 13, both our Florence High School boys and girls teams are playing at home. Throughout the five games silent auction items are biddable. The bidding will con-clude near the end of the varsity girls' game around 5:00 PM so that winners can take items home. We are in need of donated items, if you have any-thing that you can contribute please bring to the school before the start of the first game at 11:00 AM. Contact Cindy Zaluski with any questions at 406-360-2350.
