Divine Mercy Sunday
Divine Mercy Sunday is an observance in which we are encour-
aged to offer forgiveness and reconciliation to one another. It
is based on encounters of Faustian Kowalski, a Polish nun who
lived in the early 20th century, and Christ Himself. St. Faustian
devoted her life to spreading Our Savior’s message of
forgiveness to all who ask. In 2000, Divine Mercy Sunday was
decreed a Solemnity by Pope Saint John Paul II.
Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet The Divine Mercy novena began as a private revelation to St.
Faustina with the words of the prayer dictated by Jesus Himself
and which St. Faustina recorded n her diary. Christ asked St.
Faustina to recite the novena starting on Good Friday and
ending on what is now Divine Mercy Sunday, the Octave of
Easter. We are encouraged to recite the novena at any time
of the year however and it is often accompanied by the Divine
Mercy Chaplet.
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity
of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement
for our sins and those of the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on
the whole world.

Word of Life “Reflecting on the healed wounds of the Risen Christ, we see that even our most
difficult trials can be the place where God manifests his victory. He makes all
things beautiful. He makes all things new.”

From the Office of
Liturgy and Music
Our Easter celebration continues this
week with Divine Mercy Sunday and
the Gospel's account of the story of
doubting Thomas. As we extend our
Easter joy in these 50 days, it is a good
time to reflect upon the nature of
Christian joy and how that relates to
liturgical music. The first thing to
remember when we come to Holy
Mass is that the liturgy does not exist
for any one person's or group of per-
sons' individual expression but to
make an impression upon us. "Sacred
music is holy when it mediates the
holiness of God and forms the Holy
People of God more fully into com-
munion with him and with each other
in Christ." (Sing to the Lord, III.A.69)
Thus the liturgy and all of its elements
including music have as their end not
the contriving of feelings or theatrical
effects in an audience but of the
spiritual formation of its participants.
What we do as Church in large
assemblies of the faithful appeals to
us not as individuals but as a com-
munion of the faithful: it is calm,
organized, has clearly defined roles
and boundaries and appeals to
reason as that force that allows us to
make moral choices in daily life. In
this way, the liturgy liberates us from
sin and presents us with freedom from
personal caprice and fickleness.
