Dear Parishioners,
The Gospel from this Sunday, which is the Third Sunday of Easter, is that of the disciples of Emmaus (Lk 24:13-35). They were two of Jesus’ disciples who, after his death and the Sabbath was past, leave Jerusalem and return, sad and hopeless, to their village which was named Emmaus. Along the way the Risen Jesus draws near to them, but they do not recognize him. Seeing them so sad, he first helps them to understand that the Passion and death of the Messiah were foreseen in the plan of God and announced in the Sacred Scriptures: and in doing so he rekindled a fire of hope in their hearts.
At that point, the two disciples experienced an extraordinary attraction to the mysterious man, and they invited him to stay with them that evening. Jesus accepted and went into the house with them. When, at table, he blessed the bread and broke it, they recognized him, but he vanished out of their sight, leaving them full of wonder. After being enlightened by the Word, they had recognized the Risen Jesus in the breaking of the bread, a new sign of his presence. And immediately they felt the need to go back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples about their experience, that they had met the living Jesus and recognized him in the act of the breaking of the bread.
This rich passage that we hear today from Luke’s gospel illuminates several aspects of the Eucharist that might be the basis of a reflection.
Today I will focus on the link that exists between the two parts that make up the Mass: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Christ is the link because He is present in both moments of the celebration. Do you recognize Christ’s presence in the Word as clearly as in the Eucharist?
Some people may respond more powerfully to Christ’s presence in the word, if they hear good homilies, than they do to the second half of the Mass. But did you know that by listening to the proclaimed gospel you are participating in the heart of the first part of the Mass, known as the Liturgy of the Word? Did you know that you are kneeling during the consecration because you are participating in the heart of the second part of the Mass, known as the Liturgy of the Eucharist? Finally, do you recognize the intimate link between the Mass’ celebration and the mission to which you are sent each week?
We might consider this week the insights of Pope John Paul II: “We cannot delude ourselves: by our mutual love and, in particular, by our concern for those in need we will be recognized as true followers of Christ. This will be the criterion by which the authenticity of our Eucharistic celebrations is judged.”
Let us pray this week that all of us, in reliving the experience of the disciples of Emmaus, may rediscover the grace of the transforming encounter with the Lord, with the Risen Lord, who is with us always. There is always a Word of God that gives us guidance after we slip; and through our weariness and disappointments there is always a Bread that is broken that keeps us going on the journey. El Evangelio de este domingo, que es el tercer domingo de Pascua, es el de los discípulos de Emaús (Lc 24,13-35). Estos eran dos discípulos de Jesús, los cuales, tras su muerte y pasado el sábado, dejan Jerusalén y regresan, tristes y desesperanzados, hacia su aldea, llamada precisamente Emaús. A lo largo del camino Jesús resucitado se les acercó, pero ellos no lo reconocieron. Viéndolos así tristes, les ayudó primero a comprender que la pasión y la muerte del Mesías estaban previstas en el designio de Dios y anunciadas en las Sagradas Escrituras; y así vuelve a encender un fuego de esperanza en sus corazones.
Entonces, los dos discípulos experimentaron una extraordinaria atracción hacia ese hombre misterioso, y lo invitaron a permanecer con ellos esa tarde. Jesús aceptó y entró con ellos en la casa. Y cuando, estando en la mesa, bendijo el pan y lo partió, ellos lo reconocieron, pero Él desapareció de su vista, dejándolos llenos de asombro. Tras ser iluminados por la Palabra, habían reconocido a Jesús resucitado al partir el pan, nuevo signo de su presencia. E inmediatamente sintieron la necesidad de regresar a Jerusalén, para contar a los demás discípulos esta experiencia, que habían encontrado a Jesús vivo y lo habían reconocido en ese gesto de la fracción del pan.
Este rico pasaje de Lucas que hoy escuchamos ilumina una serie de aspectos de la Eucaristía que podrían ser base para una reflexión.
Hoy me concentraré en el vínculo que existe entre las dos partes que conforman la misa: la Liturgia de la Palabra y la Liturgia de la Eucaristía. Cristo es el vínculo porque Él está presente en ambas partes de la celebración. ¿Reconoces la presencia de Cristo en la Palabra tan claramente como en la Eucaristía?
Algunas personas pueden realmente responder más poderosamente a la presencia de Cristo en la Palabra, si oyen buenas homilías, que a la segunda mitad de la Misa. Pero ¿Sabías que al escuchar el evangelio proclamado estás participando en el corazón de la primera parte de la Misa, conocida como Liturgia de la Palabra? ¿Sabías que estás arrodillado durante la consagración porque estás participando en el corazón de la segunda parte de la Misa, conocida como Liturgia de la Eucaristía? Y finalmente, ¿reconoces el vínculo íntimo que existe entre la celebración de la misa y la misión a la que eres enviado cada semana?
Podríamos meditar esta semana la visión que tenía el Papa Juan Pablo II, cuando dijo: "No podemos engañarnos a nosotros mismos: por nuestro amor mutuo y, en particular, por nuestra preocupación por los necesitados, es como seremos reconocidos como verdaderos seguidores de Cristo. Este será el criterio por el cual se juzgará la autenticidad de nuestras celebraciones eucarísticas”.
Recemos esta semana para que cada uno de nosotros, reviviendo la experiencia de los discípulos de Emaús, redescubramos la gracia del encuentro transformador con el Señor resucitado, que está siempre con nosotros. Siempre hay una Palabra de Dios que nos da la orientación cuando estamos confundidos y perdidos; y cuando estamos cansados y decepcionados siempre hay un Pan partido que nos hace ir hacia adelante en el camino. ¡Que Dios los bendiga a todos! How often do we, as Christian Stewards, take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things
for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a personal
relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is asking of you.

operations also depend on the generosity of our community. Contributions can be mailed or envelopes can be dropped off to the rectory
mailbox.

¿Con qué frecuencia nos tomamos el tiempo para discernir lo que Jesús quiere de nosotros? ¿Nuestras
oraciones son siempre peticiones, pidiéndole a Jesús que haga cosas por nosotros? Si es así, esa es
una relación unilateral. Vivir nuestra fe significa desarrollar una relación personal con Jesús. Al igual
que en cualquier amistad, hay que dar y recibir, cada lado escuchándose y ayudándose mutuamente. Tómese el tiempo en silencio para escuchar lo que
Jesús le está pidiendo.

First Holy Communions scheduled before May 15th will need to be postponed. The Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass scheduled for Sunday, June 14th has been
postponed.
