Basically, Electron beam machining is also a thermal process.In electron beam machining electron used as a beam for the machining.

The electron beam gun has a tungsten/tantalum filament which is heated, freeing electrons.

The electrons are accelerated from the source with high voltage potential between a cathode and anode.

The potential difference (about 30kv) is applied across tungeston filament so that the filament temperature goes around 2500 degree centigrade at such high temperature and moreover vacuum, there would be emission of thermo-ionic electrons. So because of potential difference between anode and cathode the electrons are accelerated.

The stream of electrons then pass through a hole in the anode. The beam is directed by magnetic forces of focusing and deflecting coils. This beam is directed out of the gun column and strikes the on the work piece.

When the high velocity electrons impinges on the work surface where by the kinetic energy, of electron transferred to the work material, produces intense heating. Depending on the intensity of the heat thus generated, the material can melt or vaporize. Hence in this way the machining done .

EBM process has to be conducted on vacuum because due to the presence of air the molecules of air collide with the electron and due to elastic collision there is a lose of energy.

The whole process carried out in a vacuum chamber which is maintained by the Rotary pump and Diffusion pump.

Generally, EBM is used for the cutting narrow slots and the drilling for fine holes.
