As catalysts of change, young people play a

crucial role in communicating and

encouraging local actions that promote environmentalism. It is just as important to make sure

that young people are organized and committed to launching their own programs, in their own spheres of influence. Thus, on June 28, 2013, the Philippine Youth Environment Network (PhilYEN) conducted its Grand Re-launch after nearly half a decade of silence. The activity was co-organized with YSDA, which serves as the Secretariat of the network.

Youth leaders from different high schools and universities attended the event to pledge their commitment to conduct activities in their own schools for the environment. Resource speakers from the

Asian Development Bank, Ms. Earth P h i l i p p i n e s , M a y n i l a d a n d t h e Department of Education were also there.

Results: (a) increased membership of PhilYEN (b) promotion of volunteerism and youth initiatives among student leaders (c) committed actions to be led by young people for the environment for 2013

How the volunteering with global dimenssion was promoted? Space was allocated for a presentation on volunteerism and the opportunities to volunteer in other communities/countries. The Youth in Action Programme was similarly discussed as an avenue for volunteering with global dimension.

How the participation of young people was promoted? In each ac t iv i ty, youth par t ic ipat ion was highlighted. Speakers also made sure to show how youth participation could complement and enhance existing programs. There were discussions on how

youth can help in implementing several on-the-ground activities/advocacies..

Visibility and dissemination: Coverage for the event was a combination of traditional and social media. The event was included in the evening news of a major broadcasting company, ABS-CBN, which reaches millions of Filipinos; published on a newspaper broadsheet; and in publ icat ions o f the sponsor s. Furthermore, social media was highly activated -- i.e., Facebook and Twitter were used thoroughly before, during and after the event.

This session was quite critical and some participant also shown their anger on the European Commiss ion by giving examples of their diplomatic policies.

The facilitators listen to them patiently as the primary goal of the conference was to stimulate the "Seed of Goodness" which is within them so, that they can realise and reflect their own inner insight and feeling on "What they can do to make things better in their person level, Local Level and Global level instead of carrying a critical approach on everything happening in the world.

How the volunteering with global dimenssion was promoted? Indian traditions are deeply embedded with the attitude of volunteering from thousand of years. Only since the call-center and management Job culture influenced the Indian youths and the volunteering attitude seem to be lost in the youths who live in the cities. As in Indian v i l l a g e s t h e l i f e i s s t i l l h i g h l y Interdependent on the volunteering culture. As the Global Education and Volunteering goes well together. Citizens in Action organized a

conference/meeting in Santorini island on

20th September with the title “Think global – Act local”. It lasted 1 day and involved about

50 participants and four volunteers of

C.i.A.The aim of the conference for C.i.A.

was to make a step forward from the yearly implementation of voluntary projects to spreading a message in the local community about the impact of the international volunteers’ work and presence. A second aim was also to involve people working with youth in the island, in a reflection about the future needs to be addressed and the possibilities that can be offered to local young people.

To achieve these aims, we invited teachers and people active in local cultural associations. We approached i s sue s such a s the po ten t i a l o f international volunteering in contributing to the local development of the island, the current needs of young people living in Santorini and what volunteering, local or international, can offer to them.

The main results obtained, thanks to the conference, are the increase of participants’ awareness about the educational motives that underlie international volunteering, and a more active involvement of relevant local actors in the planning of future voluntary projects.

EVS workshop and its global dimenssion were a part of this event. The conference meetings with company HR department workers were organized, psychologis t , youth workers and practicioners. There were lectures and workshops about benefits comming from non- formal education and about certain

possibilities which Youth in Action programme offers to young people.

Activities: presentation of Citizens in Action and the reasons of the meeting, interactive presentation of participants, presentation of CiA international volunteering activities in Santorini, ESIA project framework and partnership and testimonies by the volunteers and the local people who were involved in past w o r k c a m p s , d i s c u s s i o n a b o u t international volunteering and its links with the local community of the island, brainstorming of needs and ideas to be addressed in the local community through the participation of international volunteers.

C.i.A.Results: (a) participants gained

useful insights about international volunteering as an educational tool for all those involved: volunteers, local youth, local associations of citizens, (b) the informal network of contacts within the local community was strengthened (c) increased perspectives to involve local youth in the future in international voluntary projects and provide them with stimulating learning opportunities, (d)

C.i.A. received a useful feedback from the local community about the work done in the previous years, together with i d e a s a n d i n p u t s o n f u t u r e developments.

How the volunteering with g l o b a l d i m e n s s i o n w a s promoted? The global dimension of volunteering was a crosscutting theme along all the conference. Starting from the example of the workcamps that we already organize in the island and several participants already knew, we could draw evidence-based conclusions on how the presence of international volunteers can boost participation and active citizenship even at local level. It was interesting that some participants could understand why Koreans or Mexican volunteers decide to spend their holidays in a such small island working all day. This is something that specially small communities often wonder when hosting international volunteers.

Also, when describing ESIA project, C.i.A. volunteers (most of them were not

Greek) gave an interesting feedback to participants about their own learning experience when volunteering in Greece and how this made them reflect about what links communities and cultures from such different and distant countries.

20th September with the title “Think global – Act local”. It lasted 1 day and involved about

50 participants and four volunteers of

C.i.A.How the participation of young

people was promoted? Only 3 young people participated in the meeting. In a rural and small community like the one of Santorini it has always been a challenge for CiA volunteers to gather young people and involve them in our actions. Despite we advertised the conference in the schools thanks to the teachers, we did not manage to have many young people involved. Instead, we had a good

par t i c ipat ion f rom the t eacher s themselves.

The topic of youth participation was particularly addressed during the afternoon when the discussion turned around the topic of the impact of international workcamps on the local community. One of the main conclusions is that the presence of international volunteers in Santorini gave the opportunity to local youth to get in touch with them, learn about their motivation for volunteering in another country, and in certain cases get inspiration to start being more active themselves.

Visibility and dissemination: The overall framework of the conference was the international volunteering and its benefits for the local community, both on practical level (community development) and on an educational level (active citizenship and motivating local youth to be active in their own place). Most teachers did not know about Youth in

Action programme and opportunities such the EVS; at the end of the

conference, those who were interested to get more information, approached the volunteers of C.i.A. and expressed their interest to disseminate information among their students. This is something that, except in such occasions, does not usually happen on a small island which is far away from Athens.

"Youth Participation and Volunteering"

local event aimed to promote volunteering,

active participation and provide

information for young people about the

volunteering opportunities.

The event was a space for both prospective and ex-volunteers to meet and share ideas and experience gained during their volunteering. The event also aimed to provide opportunity to young people to get to know each other, understand and reflect on their own needs while having an opportunity to volunteer not only in Europe but also in different parts of the world. It focused on bridging the borders of cultures by overcoming stereotypes and prejudices

that are obstacles to understand their own self and others both in local and global level.

Activities: The local event provided a space for the participants with diverse cultural backgrounds and ages to contribute with their active participation in the event.

The program of the event was formed of two parts; morning and afternoon sessions.

At the beginning all participants took part in teambuilding activates as they would need to know each other and work together during daylong event. The main approach for the morning session was to give participants an open space for learning from each other, discovering new ideas, sharing them and presenting their experience in volunteering both in Europe and in Asia. Prospective volunteers had an opportunity to reflect on their own needs and possibilities for their future EVS projects.

Afternoon session was focused more on providing complete information about

volunteering opportunities In Europe and Asia. Various videos, photos, blogs made by EVS volunteers were presented during this session. YiA programme and particularly all aspects of EVS were covered.

Give participants an open space for learning from each other.

local event aimed to promote volunteering,

active participation and provide

information for young people about the

volunteering opportunities.

Results: The main result of this event was uniting young people who already had volunteering experience and the ones who had a wish to experience it and creating a strong network of youngsters who are motivated to be engaged in local activities in their communities.

The outcomes of the projects are really visible on local level: (1) A strong group of local volunteers was created, responsible for organizing a non-formal

educational activity of secondary and high school students introducing them local crafts (2) The group of local volunteers work and collaborate with EVS volunteers who volunteer in Lorca promoting youth participation, active citizenship thought various cultural-educational events and activities

Important achievement is the fact that young people participating in this event are now very motivated to participate in various projects. This shows that they are clear that they want to continue learning and also sing the opportunity to support the community and young generation with their own local project.

How the volunteering with global dimenssion was promoted? First, the global dimension was reflected in a multilateral exchange – ex volunteers who were in India and a volunteer from Vietnam were able to share their experience and culture and at the same

time, gain knowledge of the cultures that were represented during the event. That

certainly improved the understanding of a global context and opened their horizons to g lobal thinking and intercultural understanding. Second, it was very important to mention about the importance of the voice of young people on the world today and how they can create more peaceful and just societies.

Give participants an open space for learning from each other.
