WELCOME Please stand as you are able as we join together to sing the introit hymn: All my hope

on God is founded (NEH 333)

All my hope on God is founded; He doth still my trust renew.

Me through change and chance he guideth, Only good and only true.

God unknown, He alone

Calls my heart to be his own.

Pride of man and earthly glory, Sword and crown betray his trust;

What with care and toil he buildeth, Tower and temple, fall to dust

But God's power,

Hour by hour, Is my temple and my tower.

God's great goodness aye endureth,

Deep his wisdom, passing thought: Splendour, light and life attend him,

Beauty springeth out of naught.

Evermore From his store

New-born worlds rise and adore.

Daily doth th'Almighty giver

Bounteous gifts on us bestow; His desire our soul delighteth, Pleasure leads us where we go.

Love doth stand At his hand;

Joy doth wait on his command.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy Name. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters, God is love and we are God’s children.

There is no room for fear in love. We love because God loved us first.

In the knowledge of that love, let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

ALL Sit or KNEEL Silence

God our Father, we confess to you

and to our fellow members in the Body of Christ that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do.

We are truly sorry. Forgive us our sins, and deliver us from the power of evil,

for the sake of your Son who died for us, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

A reading from the second book of Samuel (2 Samuel 7: 1-14a )

Now when the king was settled in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2 the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the

ark of God stays in a tent.’ 3 Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the LORD is with you.’ 4 But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: 5 Go and tell my servant David:

Thus says the LORD: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have moved about among all the

people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders

of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ 8 Now therefore thus

you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; 9 and I have been with you wherever you

went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant

them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you

that the LORD will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish

his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be a father to

him, and he shall be a son to me.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The choir will sing Psalm 23

SECOND READING A reading from the St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (Ephesians 2: 11-22 )

So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called ‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a

physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the

covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in

his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making

Page 8: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

8

peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through

it. 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer

strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and

grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built

together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Please stand as you are able as we join together to sing the Gradual Hymn: Christ is

the world’s true light (Nun Danket 413) (NEH 494)

Christ is the world’s true Light,

Its Captain of salvation, The Daystar shining bright To every man and nation;

New life, new hope awakes, Where’er men own his sway: Freedom her bondage breaks,

And night is turned to day.

In Christ all races meet, Their ancient feuds forgetting,

The whole round world complete, From sunrise to its setting:

When Christ is throned as Lord,

Men shall forsake their fear, To ploughshare beat the sword,

To pruning-hook the spear.

Page 9: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

One Lord, in one great name Unite us all who own thee;

Cast out our pride and shame That hinder to enthrone thee;

The world has waited long,

Has travailed long in pain; To heal its ancient wrong,

Come, Prince of Peace, and reign.

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour. (Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56 )

The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by

yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and

recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 53 When they had

crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54 When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, 55 and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on

mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who

touched it were healed.

Give thanks to the Lord for his glorious Gospel. Praise to Christ our Lord.

Please sit for

The SERMON

Brothers and Sisters let us now affirm our faith together in the words of the Nicene Creed. Please stand as you are able, as we say together the Nicene Creed

Page 10: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

10

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. As we come before our loving God let us offer up our prayers of intercessions.

Please sit or kneel for the INTERCESSIONS, we pray for the church and the world giving thanks for God’s goodness.

Please stand as you are able to for the Peace.

Page 11: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

Christ the Good Shepherd comes with peace. We meet in Christ’s Name.

Let us share his peace. and all may exchange a (social distanced) sign of Christ’s peace

We now join together to sing hymn: Hail, thou Source of every blessing (NEH 51)

Hail, thou Source of every blessing, Sovereign Father of mankind!

Gentiles now, thy grace possessing, In thy courts admission find.

Once far off, but now invited,

We approach thy sacred throne; In thy covenant united,

Reconciled, redeemed, made one.

Now revealed to eastern sages, See the star of mercy shine, Mystery hid in former ages,

Mystery great of love divine.

Hail, thou universal Saviour! Gentiles now their offerings bring,

In thy temple seek thy favour, Jesu Christ, our Lord and King.

In preparation for the Eucharistic Prayer please remain standing as you are able The Eucharistic Prayer

Let us present our offerings to the Lord. Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in

heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own we give you.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Page 12: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

12

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God, It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Worship and praise belong to you, Father,

in every place and at all times.

All power is yours. You created the heavens and established the earth; you sustain in being all that is.

In Christ your Son our life and yours are brought together in a wonderful exchange. He made his home among us that we

might for ever dwell in you. Through your Holy Spirit you call us to new birth

in a creation restored by love.

As children of your redeeming purpose ... we offer you our praise, with angels and archangels

and the whole company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory:

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

It is customary to sit or kneel at this point in the Eucharistic Prayer

Glory and thanksgiving be to you, most loving God, for the gift of your Son born in human flesh He is the Word existing beyond time,

both source and final purpose, bringing to wholeness all that is made. Obedient to your will he died upon the Cross.

By your power you raised him from the dead.

Page 13: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

13

He broke the bonds of evil and set your people free

to be his Body in the world On the night when he was given up to death,

knowing that his hour had come, having loved his own, he loved them to the end.

At supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks.

He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat.

This is my Body: it is broken for you." After supper, he took the cup,

he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: "Drink this, all of you.

This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven.

Do this in remembrance of me."

We now obey your Son's command We recall his blessed passion and death,

his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts

and with them ourselves a single, holy living sacrifice.

Hear us, most merciful God, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine,

that, overshadowed by his life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son, and we may be kindled with the fire of your love

and renewed for the service of your Kingdom.

Page 14: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

14

Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's Body to live and work to your praise and glory;

may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage

in the company of the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and prophets, and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Living Bread is broken for the life of the world Lord, unite us in this sign.

As our Saviour Christ has commanded and taught us we are bold to say, in whatever language is most familiar to you

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have

mercy on us Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

All are warmly welcome to come forward for communion or a blessing.

Please pause to receive communion into your hearts and/or hands. During Communion the Choir will sing the Anthem

Page 15: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

15

The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never;

I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine for ever.

Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth,

and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,

but yet in love He sought me,

and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still,

thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread'st a table in my sight;

thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight

from thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never:

Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise

within thy house for ever. After communion:

Give thanks to the Lord for he is gracious and his mercy endures for ever

O God, as we are strengthened in these holy mysteries, may our lives be a continual offering , holy and acceptable in your sight; through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 16: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

16

Father, your steadfast purpose is the completion of all things in your Son. May we who have received the pledges of the

kingdom, live by faith, walk in hope and be renewed in love, until the world reflects your glory and you are all in all; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Any notices are offered. Please stand as you are able to receive the blessing The BLESSING:

The Lord be with you. and also with you.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you and those whom you love, now and always. Amen

We now join together to sing our final hymn: Christ is made the sure foundation (NEH 205)

Christ is made the sure foundation,

And the precious corner-stone, Who, the two walls underlying,

Bound in each, binds both in one,

Holy Sion's help for ever, and her confidence alone.

All that dedicated city,

Dearly loved by God on high, In exultant jubilation

Pours perpetual melody,

God the One, in Threefold glory, Singing everlastingly.

Page 17: Eucharist Service for Pentecost VIII

17

To this temple, where we call thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today;

With thy wonted loving-kindness, Hear thy people as they pray;

And thy fullest benediction

Shed within its walls for ay.

Here vouchsafe to all thy servants Gifts of grace by prayer to gain; Here to have and hold for ever,

Those good things their prayers obtain, And hereafter, in thy glory,

With thy blessèd ones to reign.

Laud and honour to the Father, Laud and honour to the Son,

Laud and honour to the Spirit,

Ever Three and ever One, One in love, and One in splendour, While unending ages run. Amen.

Dismissal Brothers and Sisters go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.
