The Twenty Second Sunday After Pentecost

Sunday, October 24, 2021

9:00 AM Service

Loving God . . . Serving Others . . . Living Our Faith

Welcome to St. Thaddeus We invite you to participate fully in our worship of God. Our liturgy follows the

Rite II form of the Mass. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Our Lord in

bread and wine at our altar. The cross symbols in the text indicate the traditional

places where the people may make the sign of the cross over themselves.

Please inform an usher if you have a mobility impairment. For those with mobility

issues, the celebrant will bring communion to you if you desire it.

Be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent; for this is the House of God. Before the service,

speak to the Lord; during the service, let the Lord speak to you;

After the service, speak to one another.

(The voices of small children are always welcome!)

PROCESSION

LITURGY OF THE WORD All standing, as you are able, the Celebrant says

Celebrant Glory to the one, holy, and living God.

People Glory to God for ever and ever.

The Priest stands and says

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are

hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may

perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant God be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that

we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ

our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen.

FIRST READING All sit. JOB 42:1-6, 10-7

A Reading from the book of Job.

Job answered the LORD:

“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’

Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me,

which I did not know.

‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.’

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;

therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

And the LORD restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and

the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. Then there came to him all his

brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread with him

in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that

the LORD had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a

gold ring. The LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he

had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a

thousand donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. He named the first

Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. In all the land there were

no women so beautiful as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance

along with their brothers. After this Job lived for one hundred and forty years, and

saw his children, and his children’s children, four generations. And Job died, old and

full of days.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34:1-8

1 I will bless the LORD at all times; *

his praise shall ever be in my mouth.

2 I will glory in the LORD; *

let the humble hear and rejoice.

3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *

let us exalt his Name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me *

and delivered me out of all my terror.

5 Look upon him and be radiant, *

and let not your faces be ashamed.

6 I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me *

and saved me from all my troubles.

7 The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *

and he will deliver them.

8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; *

happy are they who trust in him!

SECOND READING HEBREWS 7:23-28

A Reading from the book of Hebrews.

The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from

continuing in office; but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues

forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through

him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled,

separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests,

he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for

those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law

appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath,

which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE

HOLY GOSPEL MARK 10:46-52

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were

leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of

David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even

more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him

here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.”

So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What

do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.”

Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight

and followed him on the way.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

HOMILY

NICENE CREED All stand, as you are able

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE All remain standing, as you are able

of justice and healing, through Christ your Son, in whom we pray. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN All kneel as you are able.

The Deacon then says Let us confess our sins to God.

Deacon and the people

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our

lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you

have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done,

and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior

Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Celebrant

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus

Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in

eternal life. Amen.

PEACE

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you.

People And also with you.

HOLY COMMUNION The Celebrant says

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and make good your vows to the Most

High. Psalm 50:14

OFFERTORY

Presider To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the

victory and the majesty. People All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give

you.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God,

source of life and fountain of mercy.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love;

you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you

replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation,

we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

SANCTUS

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in

your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our

care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we

failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness

in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected

your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all

people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered

us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your

promise of salvation.

Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born

into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself

freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had

given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my

Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave

it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which

is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this

for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this

bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our

Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit

and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your

daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise

your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us,we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant

THE LORD’S PRAYER The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

People Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

All baptized persons are welcome to receive Holy Communion.

The Presider says

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

All who are participating in this liturgy at home are invited to say the following prayer

for spiritual communion:

In union, O Lord, with the faithful at every altar of your church where the Holy Eucharist

is now being celebrated, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my

soul and body with the earnest wish that they may always be united to you. I remember

your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. And

since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my

heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing

ever separate you from me. May I live and die in your love. Amen.

COMMUNION

After Communion, the Presider says

Let us pray.

Presider and People

Loving God,

we give you thanks

for restoring us in your image

and nourishing us with spiritual food

in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood.

Now send us forth

a people, forgiven, healed, renewed;

that we may proclaim your love to the world

and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

BLESSING The priest blesses the people.

The Wisdom of God

the Love of God

and the Grace of God

strengthen you

to be Christ’s hands and heart in this world,

in the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen.

others and ourselves a deeper relationship to our Lord Christ Jesus. Daughters are not

called to do but to be. Daughters are not required to participate in any project undertaken

UPCOMING SOUP KITCHEN EVENTS

Through the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, we are bringing back some

of last year’s highly successful soup kitchen projects. In November, we will

have a blanket drive. Blankets will be collected on Wednesday, Nov. 17 and

Friday, Nov. 19. Both days from 3:00 – 5:00 PM in the nursery. Please

enter from the outside door to the nursery located in the cemetery. Our space

to store them is limited since the chapel is back being used, so please do not

bring them to the office early. Blankets will be given out in conjunction with

the Thanksgiving Meal on Saturday, Nov. 20. For that meal, we will ask for

donations of turkey breast, stuffing/dressing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie

like last year. Look for a sign up genius to be sent out in the next week for

that meal.

Coming in December we will have our reverse Advent Calendar bags like last

year. In addition, we will serve a holiday meal on December 18 and will ask

for donations of cookies for dessert. Look for details on these activities later

in November.

Thank you so much for your continued support of the soup kitchen. If you

are unable to participate in these projects but would like to help out we are

always open to monetary donations. Just send them to the office marked for

soup kitchen. Thanks for helping to make the holiday season brighter for

those in need.
