Historic House cannot be on National Register
Justice Silas Richards House
Justice Silas Richards (painting in Library at right) served as a Justice on the Ohio Court of Appeals. He also
served in other justice positions. He was friends with Andrew Carnegie. As president of the Clyde Schools
Board Richards convinced Carnegie to finance a library in Clyde. Carnegie's library was built across Buckeye
Street from the Richards Home.
Doug and Councilwoman Bonnie Boyer bought the house. Clyde City Council rezoned it from residential to
commercial so Boyers will convert it to a restaurant and suites.
The Councilwoman seeks to establish a plan with tax abatement to assist owners in placing historic houses on
the National Register. HOWEVER, The Register insists on no external changes such as painting, adding a ramp,
and converting to commercial use.

Rec Board delays
Rec Center planning
In its regular meeting
August 12, Clyde
Recreation Board and the
Community Center
Committee decided "to
table the Community
Center progression at this
time".
The decision came after
members presented their
planning process to City
Council at its July 15
meeting when Council
voted to have the
Committee work with CM
Paul Fiser to discuss costs
and taxing options.
The original plan would
have put the Center on the
March ballot. Now they will
await C-GS levy results in
November 2019.
The North Softball Diamond was once considered as the best
site for a recreation center for several reasons after the Men's
Softball League left for Green Springs and C-GS built Joe
Wilson Field for softball at Clyde High School. The site
seemed ideal located at Community Park within walking
distance of several neighborhoods, had room to expand
parking, and would return other activities to the park.
Perhaps now the City, the Parks Department, and the Rec
Board can be positive on upgrading the existing 'rec centers'
around the City to make them more fully accessible and 'family
friendly' by the December 31 Federal deadline?
