Leisure activities are what make Prince George sucha great place to live. The results of the myPG publicconsultation process have been recently released andCouncil has noted the value the community sees in

cultural and recreational activities. This Active Living Guide is a tool thatmakes these programs more accessible for all Prince George residents. Seniors,youth, families, individuals with special needs, and groups will find theinformation they need to connect to the major events and programs availablein our community.

Fitness, health, and wellbeing are important aspects of a vibrant community.I encourage you to take time to discover the incredible variety of programsPrince George has to offer. Planning an event? Organizing asports group? Need a gym?

School gymnasiums are availablefor public use for a variety ofactivities throughout the schoolyear. An individual or group mayrequest the use of a school orfacility by contacting theCommunity Services Department.Please note that there is aminimum two week processingtime, and before any booking iseffective the City of Prince Georgemust have a completed and signedcontract on file.

Subsidy Programs

LEISURE ACCESSPROGRAMWhat is the Leisure AccessProgram?This program is designed to makerecreation opportunities with theCity of Prince George financiallyaccessible for all residents.

What do I Get?Everyone who qualifies for theLeisure Access Program will receive abar coded card with fortycomplimentary passes for publicswimming and public skatingadmissions. In addition, a 75%discount on City of Prince Georgeregistered programs to a maximumof $50.

How Do I Qualify?To be eligible for the Leisure AccessProgram you must:

• Live within the Prince GeorgeMunicipal Boundaries andsurrounding area.

• Show financial need by areferral from a social worker or acopy of your Notice ofAssessment showing the total ofall wage earners in yourhousehold. The total must bebelow the Statistics Canada LowIncome cutoff.

How Do I Apply?Pick up a Leisure Access applicationform from:

• Four Seasons Leisure Pool700 Dominion Street

• City Hall - 1100 PatriciaBoulevard

Complete the application form,attach photocopies of requireddocuments and return it to theaddress below. Applications take 2weeks to process.

KidSportPrince George KidSport helpschildren overcome financial barriersthat prevent them fromparticipating in sport. Localvolunteers work together to helpchildren access sport opportunitieswhen they might not otherwise beenable to. Last year over 120 kidsplayed sports thanks to KidSportfunding.

VOLUNTEER AWARDSPrince George is an exceptional Citybecause of the number and varietyof people who work hard and giveof their time to make thiscommunity a wonderful place tolive.

The City of Prince George annuallyrecognizes the outstandingcontributions of volunteers in theCity. These individuals arerecognized and honored at theAnnual Civic Appreciation Dinner.

Recreation Award of Meritrecognizes individuals in thecommunity who have made anoutstanding contribution to asingle recreation organization for aminimum of 10 years.

Community Service Awardrecognizes individuals in thecommunity who have made anoutstanding contribution to asingle community serviceorganization for a minimum of 10years.

Outstanding Volunteer Award ofMerit recognizes individuals in thecommunity who have made asignificant contribution tonumerous recreation and/orcommunity service areas for aminimum of 15 years.

Youth of the Year Awardrecognizes youth ages 13 to 18that have made outstandingcontributions to the communitythrough their volunteer efforts.

All these individuals must havedemonstrated outstandingdedication and passion towardstheir volunteer organizations andhave made a significant differencewith their volunteer efforts.

2010 Youth of the Year The City of Prince George wouldlike to congratulate Sufey Chen onbeing the 2010 City of PrinceGeorge Youth of the Year.

CITY GRANTSThe City of Prince George offers anumber of grants to non-profitorganizations

Cultural / Arts GrantsGroups wishing to apply for theCultural / Art grants must submitan application by 5:00 pm FridayNovember 26, 2010.

Application forms and criteria areavailable on-line or at City Hall inearly October (www.city.pg.bc.ca/rec_culture/grants)

Requests for grants must besubmitted on the City’s applicationform, and must include all of thesupporting documentation listed onthe application. Late or incompletesubmissions may result in therejection of applications.

Travel GrantsApplications are now available atthe Community Services Departmentin City Hall or on the City web site.Applications are reviewed in Juneand December of each year. Formore information call 250-561-7640.

Grants can be paidto individuals ororganizations fortravel related toacademic, art,cultural and amateursport/recreation purposes involvingyouth 18 years of age or younger, ifthey have:

• Been selected at a juried showto have his/her work displayedin a Provincial, WesternCanadian, National level orwithin a designated geographicarea as recognized by thesponsoring organization;

OR• Been awarded a scholarship

within a specific field or art toattend a school of National orWestern Canadian recognition;

OR• Won a zone or regional

competition or have beenselected by a sponsoringorganization to representPrince George at a Provincialcompetition;

OR• Won a Provincial competition

and have gone on toparticipate in a WesternCanadian, National competitionor competition within adesignated geographic area asrecognized by the sponsoringorganization;

OR• Won the right or been selected

to represent the City, theProvince, and/or Canada at aninternational competition.

On occasion, those activities thatare considered to be in pursuit ofexcellence are eligible for funding.

During each ProfessionalDevelopment Day in SchoolDistrict #57 the City of PrinceGeorge coordinates a listingof all the fun activities forchildren to enjoy during theirday off school. Children canstay active and learn somecool things too byparticipating in activities likeswimming, gymnastics, firstaid classes, art, scienceexploration and much more.On Pro-D Days businesses andorganizations offer specialand/or discounted rates onrecreation opportunities.

ACTIVE LIVING AQUATIC SWIM PASSThe City of Prince George AquaticDivision recognizes the health andpersonal benefits of regularphysical activity and is committedin providing affordable, accessible,aquatic fitness opportunities withinPrince George. The Active LivingAquatic Swim Pass is a promotionalpass based on the honour system,where one hour of physical activityis required for each visit.

25% discount – 3 or more visits per week

20% discount – minimum of 2 visits per week

Registrants choose how often theyintend to use the aquatic facilityand at the end of each monthshould you wish to continue in theprogram, your new discount ratewill be based upon the number ofvisits from the previous month.

Having a current Active LivingAquatic Pass is the qualifier toparticipate in the Aquatic FitnessChallenge program. You swim atyour own pace and on your ownschedule. At the end of each swimyou register your points at thereception counter and we will keeptrack of your progress.

3. Have a Backup Plan What willyou do if it rains? The idealoutdoor wedding location hasan indoor location waiting justin case. A tent is anotheroption, but only for light tomoderate rain storms. Makesure any tent you rent issturdy so it won't flip over andis weighted not spiked intothe ground.

4. Decorations One of thebonuses of an outdoorwedding in a City Park is thenatural beauty around you,lessening your need todecorate if not eliminating itall together. Plan to set upand take down your ceremonywithin the time reserved.

PRUNING CITY OWNEDTREESThe Parks Division staffs areresponsible for the maintenanceof boulevard trees. The staff candetermine what type of pruning isnecessary to maintain or improvethe health, appearance and safetyof boulevard trees. Most trees arepruned by the Parks Division Staffin late fall or early winter eachyear. Most trees can also bepruned safely at other times ofthe year. The exceptions to this

are Birch and Maple trees thatwill only take light pruning inAugust to reduce sap loss. If you

OFF LEASHIMPLEMENTATIONSTRATEGYResidents and visitors to PrinceGeorge have long since enjoyedexercising their dogs within thevarious open space areas that thecommunity offers. Theimplementation of a few pilotproject Off Leash Areas has assistedwith these needs, however aformalized Off Leash Program isrequired to provide quality parkuse. In December 2009, CityCouncil adopted the Off LeashImplementation Strategy toeffectively accommodate this usergroup while alleviating the issuesassociated with illegitimate offleash use at various parks andschools. The Strategy included theestablishment of an Off leashAdvisory Committee who will bemaking recommendations to CityCouncil on the formalization ofexisting pilot off leash areas andoff leash area expansion in 2011.

BYLAWSThe City of Prince George BylawServices Division is responsible forthe enforcement of City Bylaws,which have been enacted toprotect persons and properties fromvarious nuisances. If you areexperiencing a problem or becomeaware of a bylaw violation, youmay register a complaint with theCity so that the situation can beresolved. Complaints may belodged by dialing Bylaw ServicesDivision at 250-561-7622.

PROPERTY MAINTENANCEAll property is to be kept from theaccumulation of rubbish, garbage,wrecked vehicles, or any discardedmaterials of any kind. In addition,all yards are to be kept free fromexcessive growth of weeds andgrasses and generally kept in amanner consistent with surroundingproperties.

SNOW REMOVAL PARKINGRESTRICITONSIn order to remove snow and icefrom our streets as quickly aspossible, it is necessary to prohibitparking on streets during certaintimes so that City crews canperform their duties efficiently.Parking is prohibited on residentialstreets from 8 am until 6 pm sevendays a week from October 15 toApril 15. Overnight parking is onlyallowed on the odd side of thestreet, unless posted otherwise.

UNPAID PARKING TICKETSMotorists are reminded that failureto pay your parking tickets mayresult in your vehicle being towedthe next time it is illegally parked.Vehicles which have an

accumulation of unpaid parking tickets may be towed when found to be illegally parkedand also may be summonsed toCourt or sent to Collections.

PARKING OF VEHICLES ONCITY BOULEVARDSAll motorists are reminded that theparking of motor vehicles on Cityboulevards is prohibited. In mostcases, the boulevard area isseparated from the road by a curb.If you had to “jump” a curb, or ifyou are parking on grass or earth,you are illegally parked and aresubject to a $25 penalty and/ortow.

NOISE CONTROLAny noise, which is unnecessary orexcessive and disturbs a person isnot allowed. For example, therepeated barking of a dog or theloud playing of a stereo is notpermitted at any time of the day ornight.

DOGS AT LARGEDog owners are prohibited fromallowing their dog(s) to run atlarge. A dog is considered to be atlarge when it leaves the propertywhere it is kept and is not underthe control of a person. If a dog ispicked up by an Animal ControlOfficer, it will be impounded at aconsiderable cost andinconvenience to the owner.

All dogs must be licensed. Thelicenses are available at thefollowing outlets. Dog licenses arevalid only for the current year.2011 licenses are available startingDecember 1, 2010. If a license ispurchased before January 31, 2011,there is a discounted rate.

Plastic milk jugs should also berinsed & flattened and the lid shouldbe removed and disposed of withyour regular garbage as it is adifferent type of plastic. Other plasticsand metal containers are notcurrently accepted for recyclingthrough the drop-depot system. FOOTHILLS BOULEVARDREGIONAL LANDFILLThe Foothills Boulevard RegionalLandfill is the largest landfill in theRegional District of Fraser- FortGeorge. The facility, at Foothills Blvdand West Austin Road, has beenupgraded to help environmentalmonitoring and to increase efficiencyand safety for those using the landfill.Site attendants are on duty duringoperating hours to provideassistance and to direct users to theappropriate areas of the landfill. Atransfer station accepts residentialrefuse, compostable materials andrecyclable materials such as oil, oilfilters, oil containers, auto batteries,tires, propane tanks, cell phone andrechargeable batteries. A Swap Shedoperates for the exchange ofused items. Other on site recyclingoptions include: scrap metal, largeappliances, small tires and yard &garden wastes for composting.

To maximize use of these facilities, itis important that wastes brought tothe site are pre-sorted for placementin designated containers and areas.
