Stylist for the stars
By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Bella Rose Salon owner Dee Burch of Linden has always had a passion for the Edwardian era of clothing and fashion from the turn of the century. Never would she have dreamed that this passion would take her on a journey leading her to the dressing room of actress Jane Seymour, not once but twice — because of a shared love for the romantic 1980 movie “Somewhere in Time,” which starred Seymour and Christopher Reeves. The movie was filmed with a romantic backdrop of The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. In fact, some people say that The Grand Hotel actually held a starring role in the movie,

as a real-life setting in a real place that can be revisited. Every year, the Grand Hotel hosts a special Somewhere in Time Weekend that allows fans to dress in period attire to celebrate the film and
the bygone era of the movie. This year, the Grand Hotel is celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the movie with the Somewhere in Time Weekend on Oct. 16-18. Burch began attending these Somewhere in Time Weekends in 2000, and her skills in costuming and hair styling began to get noticed. Somewhere in Time Cinematographer
Isadora Mankovski told her, “You’re amazing. I want you to come to Hollywood and I will help you get started.”

nervous when she saw the period elegance of the women in attendance,” said Burch. “I asked a Detroit Free Press reporter who was there covering the event to tell her I would be honored to do her hair for her.” Seymour’s assistant then made arrangements with Burch and she styled her hair in the popular “Gibson Girl” style, in Seymour’s suite. “Jane loved it,” said Burch. “She didn’t take it down for a week.” Burch, who wore a wig she styled herself in the “Gibson Girl” style, began to have many requests for that style, and now she styles more than 200 wigs every year from all over the world, in preparation for each October’s event. In 2003, Burch was asked to do a program about hairstyles from the Edwardian era — a direct result from having styled Seymour’s hair the year before. Then in 2010, she received a phone call from Seymour’s assistant to do Jane’s daughter, Katie’s, hair for an appearance at the Somewhere in Time Weekend. Now every year, Burch is an invited guest of The Grand Hotel for the Somewhere in Time Weekend. For guests who aren’t so lucky, the cost is $1,369 per couple for a lakeview room each night of the weekend. This year’s event is expected to draw up to 1,000 people. “I’m bringing my mom with me,” said Burch. Burch has been asked to style Seymour’s hair again this year, an honor which Burch is thrilled to accommodate. “I’ll be doing her hair on Friday afternoon at 12:30,” said Burch. “They want it to look just like the picture on the portrait from the movie.”

In 2002, Burch and Jane Seymour found themselves at the same place, at the same time, at The Grand Hotel. “She was very

HELLO HUNTING SEASON:
TRACKING ANIMAL FOOTPRINTS
BY HANNAH [email protected]; 810-433-6792
TIPS:• Get on your hands and knees for the best view.• Look at the tracks early in the morning or later in the day when shadows make the prints more visible.• Tracks are easiest to find in mud, soil, sand and snow. • Check to see if it has claw marks. • Animal droppings, called scat, will help identify the animal. If it’s dry, the animal was there a while ago. It can also tell you if the animal is a vegetarian or a carnivore.
DEER
SQUIRREL COYOTE
RABBIT
FOX• White-tail deer are easily identified by their hooves tracks. They resemble on oval cut in half. You can tell if the deer is a buck by looking for marks indicating that the deer drags its feet. Bucks often drag their feet to conserve energy.• When deer walk, they place their back hooves in the tracks of their front ones.• Fawn tracks are about 1½ inches, adult doe or yearling buck tracks are about 2½ inches, and bucks that are older have track sizes ranging from 3 to 4 inches.
• They have five toes and all five show up in the footprints. Front tracks are tiny, only about half an inch long by half an inch wide, and the hind tracks are bigger at an inch long and half inch wide. • The claw marks show in snow or mud. Strides are usually less than a foot long, with the hind feet together and the front paws farther apart.
• Coyote footprints are oval-shaped with four toes and claws in front and hind feet. The footpad is triangular-shaped, with the hind foot slightly smaller than the front foot. They’re 2-1/2 inches long by 2 inches wide and are pretty symmetrical. • Coyotes often trot and leave tracks where their front and hind feet land close together. Strides measure anywhere from 15 to 22 inches.
• These oval-shaped footprints have five toes on each foot, but only four toes show in the tracks. Because of their furred feet, they leave blurred impressions on the tracks. They have sharp claws, but they aren’t always detectable. • In hares, the rear tracks are larger than the front tracks, but in cottontails and other rabbits the sizes are similar.• Tracks are smaller than two inches and are usually described as “iron shaped.”Strides are a few inches long.
• Raccoons leave five-fingered, hand-shaped tracks with a diameter 2-3 inches across. The innermost toe is the smallest and the pad of the foot is C-shaped. Front tracks have longer toes that are more spread apart, as opposed to the hind tracks which have a larger palm and heel pad.• The front and hind tracks appear next to each other in the ground and strides range from 10 to 18 inches.
• Foxes have four toes that appear in an oval shape in the ground. They’re triangular in shape and each claw on the foot appears in front of each toe. Since red foxes have very furry feet, some details may be blurred. Footprints are about 1 and 3/4 inches to 2 and 1/5 inches long by 1 and 1/5 inches to 2 inches wide.• Gray foxes are similar, but have less furry feet. • At a gallop, their tracks are about a foot apart, one in front of the other.

5 YEARSSunday, Oct. 24, 2010Pranksters destroy election signs in Fenton Township. Clerk Robert Krug has a message for pranksters, or those maliciously destroying or stealing election signs — it’s against federal law. Most of the incidents have taken place along Owen and Linden roads, and in the Orchardview Estates area. “It’s just a very dumb thing to do,” Krug said. “Why do something that could easily get you in trouble.”
10 YEARSSunday, Oct. 23, 2005Sold – officials agree to sell township building. It’s a deal. On Tuesday, the Holly Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to sell the township building to The Beer Co.s’ for a net amount of $322,000. The Beer Co.s’ own three other facilities. Having amassed an enormous amount of junk deemed a danger to area children and an eyesore by area residents, Lynn has in the past been charged with operating a garage/junk yard sale without a permit and was jailed for maintaining a nuisance.

The State Bank is dedicated and committed to support causes that directly impact members of the community. In order to give back, they support both national and local causes. One national cause The State Bank supports is United Way. This year, the Bank’s staff showed overwhelming support to aid United Way in impacting the community. The Bank asked staff members if they would be willing to donate one day of their pay in exchange for eight hours of extra vacation time. The answer was an astounding “yes,” and because of the dedication of their employees, they raised nearly $10,000 — 95 percent more than what they raised last year. The Bank is proud to have employees who support the Bank’s mission, vision, and values that put community members at the forefront. Their local programs are also greatly supported by the volunteer efforts of their employees. Employees help stuff boxes at The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan each year. They proudly earned the status
of “Million Pound Club,” and in 2014, they raised more than $17,000 for the Food Bank. The Bank supports the local Change for Kids, which impacts six different school districts, including Lake Fenton, Fenton, Linden, Holly, Grand Blanc and Brighton. Change for Kids is a six-week-long campaign where the Bank asks customers to “donate their change to make change,” for local students. The State Bank has collected more than $40,000 in the past four years since the program began. The State Bank is proud to support United Way. It is this special opportunity that the Bank takes to thank its employees who participated in the United Way donation drive, and made it such a success. “I wanted to say thank you,” said Jamie Gaskins, CEO of United Way. “What a great way to start the campaign returns. The State Bank is one of our first to come in and it sets the bar high for the rest of our campaigns. A 95-percent increase will be hard to beat. Thank you.”

nThe State Bank’s new video will explain the benefits of a trust for your family’s futureBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Life is all about trust. When it comes to family and money, sometimes it’s helpful to bring in a third party to help manage your family’s assets — not only for today but also for a smooth transition to future generations. The State Bank, headquartered in Fenton, has been providing that trust through its Trust Department for 25 years — the only independent trust d e p a r t m e n t i n Genesee County. “A trust is a legal document that manages your assets today and directs your trustee as to how to disperse these assets to your beneficiaries after you pass,” said Bev Dresselhouse, vice president of The State Bank’s Trust Department. Your trustee can be a bank, attorney, CPA, family member or friend. “Sometimes an outside party can come in with a different perspective,” said Dennis Leyder, president of The State Bank’s Wealth Management, which includes trusts, estate planning, wealth management and insurance.
A trust is private, unlike a will that goes through probate and is a public record. “A trust is your final word on how you want your assets distributed,” added Dresselhouse. The State Bank’s position as an independent community bank gives its Trust Department customers the confidence they need by handling their financial affairs locally, where their family’s roots are. “A lot of people want to deal with someone local when it comes to making financial decisions
with their family,” said Leyder. Former banker William Price has had a trust through The State Bank for 15 years, giving him peace of mind as he’s getting older. “I’m blessed with four families and
11 grandkids, all living relatively close by,” said Piper. “It’s going to give them peace of mind knowing their father is taken care of in his later years, and that The State Bank will be here to provide counsel when they have to settle the estate.” His comments, as well as those from other local professionals, are featured on a video prepared for The State Bank by the Times Videographer Tim Jagielo. The video is now available for viewing on the Times’ website: tctimes.com, by clicking on “Featured Video.”

The State Bank is granted Preferred Lender StatusThe U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently granted The State Bank Preferred Lender Status (PLP). PLP status means that The State Bank is given delegated authority to underwrite and approve SBA loans on behalf of the SBA, thereby greatly expediting the loan approval and closing process. The PLP is part of SBA’s effort to streamline the procedures necessary to provide financial assistance to the small business community. “The Bank is pleased and honored to be named an SBA Preferred Lender,” said Ron Justice, The State Bank President and CEO. “Earning this designation reflects our dedication to helping our vibrant small business community grow and creates jobs through our participation in SBA’s lending programs.” The State Bank is Genesee County’s only remaining independent community Bank. The Chinook is basically an A-frame log cabin, expanded by two wings and a lofty V-shaped window bay. Living space is a little more than 1200 square feet. Whole logs give this vacation cabin a rustic look, while the metal roof and abundance of sparkling glass add contempo-rary flavor. Besides being attractive, the metal roof serves as protection in case of fire.

Recent college grad ponders parachute color
BY AMY DICKINSON
AMY DICKINSON
ASK Amy
DEAR AMY: I am a recent college graduate. I have landed an incredible job in the industry that I would like to be in. I’m lucky, but there is one thing: I am not satisfied or (dare I say) even happy. There are so many things that I want to do that aren’t this job. I feel like right now my life is controlled by my job and I am holding off on doing so many things that I want to do because of work. I want to travel the world, run an ultra-marathon, “work” writing a travel blog or a fitness blog and hike every single day. I want to “work” every day doing something I love. I don’t want a traditional job, but I feel stuck where society says I need to be, and I can’t get out of this cycle. I would love to know what you think. — Unhappy and Successful
DEAR UNHAPPY:You don’t say how you arrived at this special knowledge of what “society” wants from you. So let me speak for all of society and tell
you this: No one is tying you to the fast track. No one wants you to linger, depressed, at a professional job, which someone else might genuinely treasure. Your life belongs to you. And it unspools one day and one decision at a time. We have entered a truly golden age of writing your own life script. You could use this period to research careers that are
much closer to your dream skill set. Also, except for traveling the world, all of your goals are achievable while you are working. I suggest you get started as soon as possible. That ultra-marathon is not going to run itself!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male. I had to stop playing golf about two years ago due to joint pain. I had psoriasis from age 15 until I was 40. I am retired from the Navy and had to be hospitalized twice during my time in service due to my skin. Why it disappeared at age 40, I don’t know. Is it possible that I could have psoriatic arthritis? One doctor I saw said that I had to have psoriasis in order to get it. I saw that you said that sometimes the arthritis shows up before the skin lesions. Can it show up after you have quit having the lesions? — Anon.
Psoriasis can precede Psoriatic Arthritis
BY KEITH ROACH, M.D.
Good
HEALTH
KEITH ROACH, M.D.
ANSWER: Indeed, psoriatic arthritis can show up years after psoriasis starts and when there are no skin lesions. Often, pits
in the nails or other nail changes are seen in those with psoriatic arthritis. However, having psoriasis doesn’t protect you from other types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Since psoriatic arthritis is so destructive, you should see an expert, perhaps a rheumatologist. The arthritis booklet
discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus.
