WELCOME FATHER BIJU DEVASSY
As announced last week, Fr. Biju has been assigned by Bishop Michael Bransfield as a temporary assistant pastor to St. Paul Parish beginning on February 1. This assignment comes at the request of our pastor, Fr. Larry Dorsch, to provide some needed help during the time Fr. Larry deals with some personal and family medical issues. Fr. Biju is a native of India and has come to the United States to assist with our clergy shortage; he has been serving most recently as assistant pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Beckley. As a temporary assistant he most
likely will be at St. Paul’s until June of 2016. We hope he will be able to give us a more complete biography once he is here with us. Once our new associate is settled in, Fr. Larry will
be leaving for a couple of weeks for rest and recuperation.
CANDIDATES FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST
Preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will begin on February 14 with a session for both Children and their parents at 4 pm in the school cafeteria. Session for children will
continue on February 21 and 28 and on March 6 with the Celebration of Reconciliation on March 12 at 10 in the Church. Preparation for First Eucharist will begin on April 3 for parents
and children and continue for all the Sundays of April with First Communion, as always on May 1 at the 11 am mass. For more
details or to register for these sessions please call the parish office.
CONGRATULATIONS
We join the St. Paul School Community in congratulating Gabriel Mazzone as the 2016 “Aquinas Medal” winner. This medal is given
to the graduating student who demonstrate academic excellence, Catholic values and service. It will be awarded at the annual
Bishop’s Awards dinner in April along with all the Aquinas Medal and Bishop’s Cross winners from throughout the state of West Virginia.
We also offer our congratulations to Gabbies parents, James and Roxanne Mazzone.
Merciful God, you called us forth from the dust of the earth; you claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism. Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days bearing the mark of ashes, and bless our journey through the desert of Lent to the font of rebirth. May our fasting be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts. All that we do and pray is in the name of Jesus, for in his cross you proclaim your love for ever and ever. ———Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers

This week: Isaiah 6:1-2a,3-6 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Luke 5:1-11
Background: Luke gives us his version of the call of the first disciples,
Peter and presumably Andrew, James and John. If we compare this
version to Mark from whom Luke usually takes his lead we see this is quite
different. Why? What does Luke want his audience to hear about this call
to discipleship that is different from Mark? Why does he insert the
abundant catch of fish absent from the other versions? Why does he have
Peter down on his knees confessing sinfulness? And yet the story ends
the same way: with the four disciples leaving all their possessions and
family to follow Jesus.
Next Week: First Sunday of Lent
Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Romans 10:8-13 Luke 4:1-13
