Some say that life imitates art. We think life is art.

Living creatively is about appreciating everything around you—the beauty of a fresh local tomato, the speckled pattern on a handmade mug, the crisp linen on a well-turned bed and the clear notes of a musician's song. When you can see art all around you, life is sweeter, richer and more vibrant; colors are deeper, tastes are more complex, and experiences are more energizing.

Whether you create it or appreciate it, living a creative life is easy in Media. Learn how from the local artists featured in this issue of Fig®, or find it in Media's unique stores, artisan groups, art galleries, theatres or cafés.

Media is a gathering place for creatives. Enjoy the many opportunities to take notice and experience life as art in Media.

creating his friendly dragons or at his store,

Earth & State at 23 West State Street, Media

THE GUY WITH HIS EYE ON COMMUNITY. “I get out there and ask questions! ‘Hey, why don’t we have an Arts Council?’ A year after that, we had one, and now it really binds our town together. I like to latch onto the great things other people are already creating—to help, to be a resource.”

THE GUY WHO’S ALWAYS HERE. “Before the Arts Council initiated the 2nd Saturday Art Walk, we were already open late on Saturdays, outside, making stuff in public. People would come up and say, ‘Cool; thanks for letting me play with the clay.’ We promote arts by doing arts.”

THE GUY WITH AN OPEN DOOR POLICY. “I’m excited about the bigger picture, and I hope Earth & State

contributes to this vision. It’s a lot about civic pride and local pride, and Earth & State is a place where artists and the public can really come together. Everyone is welcome here.”

THE GUY WHO KNOWS JUST WHAT TO DO. “People love Media, and know that it’s special, but I’d like to see Media grow—in the internal sense—to continue to have more public art; more access to the wonderful natural resources around us and in us; more cooperation between businesses.”

THE GUY THAT EVERYBODY LOVES. “That makes me blush; I appreciate it, but it’s like: ‘Oh, stop it!’ Sometimes, I go incognito...” (So, when you see the guy in the hat and  sunglasses, you’ll know it’s Drew, because as he likes to say:“I just can’t help smiling at people.”)

BE INSPIRED. . . .An artists’ paradise begins in a town where its citizens embrace the arts. In Media, you find it on the streets—a mural on a brick wall, a painter working in front of a live audience on 2nd Saturday, a State Street Blues Stroll musician wailing on the sidewalk. It’s art for the people, by the people—accessible to all and not confined to an exclusive gallery set. At the hub of this democratic art movement is the Community Arts Center. More than just a place to see and be seen, the Center invites us to actively participate in the arts, not just stand by as an idle audience. The Community Arts Center supports artists at every level of their individual creative journey. “That’s why we’re here!” Deborah Yoder, Executive Director, explains. For the academic in us all, the Community Arts Center offers free lectures throughout the year. Music lovers can rejoice in Friday Night Live—a creative collision of sight and sound. Through classes in the visual arts, including pottery, painting and drawing, photography, jewelry and metals, sculpture and printmaking, students of all levels have the chance to experience the gift of creativity. Over 100 classes and workshops are offered for children, teens and adults alike. No matter what your age or background, all are welcome. As instructor Bob Deane states, “I love the combination of creating and watching the world pass in front of me. The accessibility of art allows everyone to watch it being made or to participate in the activities. In each person, great art exists.”

The Arts Center understands that investing in our youth is an investment in our future. In the highly respected summer program for children, Summer Spree, classes presented by experienced teaching artists are augmented by professional artists who share their expertise with the children. This past summer, working with a professional model builder, the children in Summer Spree created a model of the Arts Center (complete with a miniature outdoor kiln shed). The Arts Center also has a long-standing commitment to outreach programming. It’s ARTtogo program provides extraordinary arts experiences to organizations throughout the Delaware Valley. The Arts Center currently partners with a variety of area universities to present Pieces of Peace—a neighborhood anti-violence mural program in the City of Chester. ARTstart, a preschool program for children 3 and 4 years old, presents a traditional preschool curriculum through the arts. Afterschool ART provides school-aged children the opportunity to end their day with great arts experiences in the welcoming atmosphere of the CAC. As a creative space, the Community Arts Center is breathtaking to behold—an intriguing mix of grand history and crisp white walls. Built in 1889, the property is nestled into the historic estate on Plush Mill Road in Wallingford—a clandestine gem in the countryside. A great stone water tower lends

the building a castle-like quality. Elegantly appointed rooms, wide staircases and Mercer tiled fireplaces enhanced by beautifully carved mantles are all reminiscent of a place where Edgar Degas might set up his easel. The newly constructed Duke Gallery provides an exceptional exhibition space for artists from all over the country. So take the short trek to this creative forest hideaway. But be warned—you may not want to leave.

THE ROCKY RUN YMCA: moving forward

Continue reading about the Rocky Run YMCA and Media Real Estate at figmediapa.com

When you move to a new town, you pull a lot more out of your boxes than dishes and books and that old toaster that you shouldn’t have bothered to drag along. You unpack questions—likely many questions—about your still unfamiliar surroundings.  When Jeffry Cadorette came to Media three decades ago, his experience was no different. He recalls his first question with absolute clarity: “Where is the YMCA?” The answer he received? There isn’t one. At this point, completely without question, Jeff replied, “This is unacceptable to me.”

His unshakable outlook was born of an intensely personal experience. And not metaphorically, either. Jeff’s mother and father met at a YMCA. “I went every day after school,” he remembers fondly. Now, as an adult, as well as a product of this inspirational organization, Jeff fervently wanted the same positive outlet for another generation of kids and families. This time, in his new home of Media. So he rallied support, was part of the original board and eventually Media’s YMCA was born, a full decade later, in a van.

“We literally started with a van and a donated office,” Jeff reminisces. The problem with moving to a much-needed building to accommodate their many programs was not merely a financial one—over time the board and staff had grown the Y’s revenue to over one million dollars—but a territorial one, Jeff explained. “We needed a ‘territory’ for our Y, and after many years of negotiation, it finally happened.”

The founding of the Rocky Run YMCA was truly a group effort. Ed Chambers, CFO of Wawa at the time, acted as the first Board Chair and was critical in its original assembly. Countless others gave valuable time and resources. Together, they were able to become a branch of the YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity and, with the pivotal support of County Council and board member (now State Representative) Tom Killion, to lease the land to build the Rocky Run YMCA.  A long way from a 1970s van.

“I couldn’t have imagined, then, where this has gone,” marveled Jeff.  Out of the Philadelphia and Vicinity’s 11 Ys, Media’s has become the “flagship.” It’s a “jewel for the community,” now undergoing its third and final expansion, thanks, Jeff insists, to the team effort of a committed group of people, the community and many companies and corporations. Among them, Media Real Estate’s Bill Strine and his wife Judy have been major financial contributors“We went from nothing to where we are today.” And as for the future of Rocky Run? “I’m tickled with where it is,” said Jeff. But the future will definitely hold another personal story about the Y, this time from Jeff’s own son Joshua, who used to play basketball at school. Once he started playing at Rocky Run, however, he learned “more than just basketball.” At the end of every game, the YMCA staff pull the kids together and talk about the Y’s core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility—and how these ethics played out in the game. As Jeff aptly says: “They learn so much more.”

So for Jeff, and for so many others, it’s safe to say that as the YMCA continues— on such a profound level —to help families, it can’t help but run in them, too.
