Music Video Analysis The Kooks “Always Where I Need to be” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln_qHyGD9zo The music video starts off with quick clips of different locations and quick snippets of the band; this establishes where the band are located and what type of song it is. There is a contrast of different colours for example when they are crossing the road, its bright and colourful, but when they are in the apartment, it’s quite dull and grey. The video switches from being black and white to colour again. This can represent two different time periods or narratives. The outfits that the band members are wearing are quite casual, everyday clothing. There are no fancy or over-exaggerated costumes that might be featured in rock music videos. The casual clothing could represent the ‘normality’ of the band, and can also make their listeners feel familiar and comfortable with them. Whilst the instrumental is playing there is a variety of shots of the guitars, some of the band members body parts and shots of the band in silhouette so that they are not established yet. By keeping their faces hidden for the first couple of seconds can make the viewers wonder who the song is written by, and can draw them in, making them want to know who the artist is. When the artists starts to sing there is a close up of his face, giving the audience a preview of his face and finally establishing who the band is. The lighting seems to brighten as soon as the artists sings, which could represents him being the main attraction. By having a brighter light on the artists face can make him stand out from the rest of the video, so the viewers focus mainly on him. The video consists of the band playing in different locations, with a short narrative in between of the band wondering the streets and playing in arcades. This can give their fans and particular audience an insight to what they are like and what they get up too when they are not performing. As they are doing normal things, such as playing around, it could also make their audience feel a similarity between themselves and the band. The quick shots go well with the fast, upbeat tempo of the song. As the song is a happy tune, the video features the band having a good time laughing and smiling, which as a whole makes it a well constructed music video.
