*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.

Prelude Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring J.S. Bach/arr. Gehrig Welcome

Introit Humbly in your sight we come together, God, Grant us now the blessing of your presence here. These, our eyes, are yours, we give them to you, God, May we always see the world as with your sight.

*Call to Worship (from Psalm 27)

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Wait for God; be strong, and let your heart take courage. I believe that I shall see the goodness of God in the land of the living. Let us worship God.

*Hymn 20 All Things Bright and Beautiful

*Invitation to Confession

*Litany of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you. We fix our eyes on things that pull us away from you. (silence) Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned again our neighbors. We look at outward appearances and fail to see what pleases you. (silence) Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against ourselves. We desire to be other than the persons you created us to be. (silence)

*Assurance of Forgiveness

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

*Sung Response

We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God.

Time with the Children Children grades 2 and younger are invited to remain in the service or go to First Steps.

First Reading 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Anthem We Walk by Faith Burkhardt

We walk by faith and not by sight, no gracious words we hear from Him who spoke as none ever spoke, but we believe Him near. We may not touch His hands and side, nor follow where He trod, but in His promise we rejoice and cry, “My Lord and God!” Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound to call on You when You are near and seek where You are found. Lord, when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light we may behold You as You are, with full and endless sight.

Second Reading John 9:1-12

Sermon Come to Your Senses: Sharon Youngs The Eyes Have It —Or Do They?

*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC)

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 698; sing twice)

Take, O take me as I am; Summon out what I shall be; Set your seal upon my heart and live in me.

Worship notes Our Lenten worship theme this year is “Come to Your Senses.” We will take a different sense each Sunday in March (sight, taste, touch, sound, and smell) and explore how it helps to enhance our journey of faith.

This first Sunday of Lent our focus is on sight and seeing. As a way to may our prayers visible and tangible, we’ll create a prayer web. Using the strip of colored paper found in your bulletin, write a prayer or name of someone for whom you pray, and attach it to the prayer web. A visual expres-sion of love and care will emerge, a reflection of our community.

Canoeing Lent On Wednesdays, Mar. 4, 11, and 18, there will be a churchwide pizza supper and discussion of the book, Canoeing the Mountains, by Tod Bolsinger. Pizza will be served at 5:15 p.m. in the fellowship hall; the discussion will begin at 5:45 p.m. (The book is available on Amazon. Make sure you order the correct one; there’s another book with a similar title by another author.)

Who Are We Presbyterians? Beginning March 8, Sharon will lead the three-week series, “Who Are We Presbyterians?”, 9:00 a.m., in room 6. All are invited, especially folks who are new to FPC. Discussions will cover Presbyterian history and theology in general, and FPC’s mission and ministries in particular.
