Symbolism of the Advent Wreath Candles Set on the branches of the Advent wreath are four candles: three purple candles and one pink candle. A more modern tradition is to place a white candle in the center of the wreath. As a whole, these colored advent candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world. Each week of Advent on Sunday, a particular Advent candle is lit. Catholic tradition states that the four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Prophecy Candle On the first Sunday of Advent, the first purple candle is lit. This candle is typically called the "Prophecy Candle" in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)This first candle represents hope or expectation in anticipation of the coming Messiah. Giving Tuesday Giving Tuesday is December 3. It was started in 2012 to encourage people in every corner of the globe to shift the focus of the holiday season to charity and compassion. Giving Tuesday reminds us to give back to our communities in a meaningful way while we get caught up

in shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday also provides us an opportunity to thank God for all the blessings that He has bestowed upon us during the year and to look within ourselves to see how we can best use our talent and treasure to help others. This year, St. Ferdinand Parish is building upon that feeling of generosity and compassion by asking our parishioners to prayerfully consider eGiving through Faith Direct. By using eGiving for your regular offertory, you are providing stable support to our parish and furthering our shared mission to give back to others and spread the word of God.

Enrolling in eGiving is a safe and secure way to give to our parish and getting started is easy. To enroll in the program, pick up an enrollment form from the Parish Office or visit www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code PA279.
