Gleny Rae brings swing back EX-DARWIN resident Gleny Rae Virus returns to the Top End this week to play several gigs over festival season. The musician and performer moved south to complete her Bachelor of Education and ex- plore the genre of western swing. Since 2007, Gleny Rae and her Playboys have record- ed three CDs and an EP, toured the USA twice and played fes- tivals across the country. In 2011, the band was selec- ted from hundreds of appli- cants to showcase at the Americana Music Association Festival in Nashville. Gleny Rae describes their sound as “steam-powered hill- billy swing” – a blend of west- ern swing and early rockabilly traditions laced with Aussie yarns and humour. In between touring, writing, recording and teaching music, Gleny Rae was one of six par- ticipants in the SBS reality doc- umentary Go Back To Where You Came From. Gleny retraced the steps of Iraqi refugees from their new home in Liverpool, Sydney, through Kuala Lumpur in Ma- laysia and Amman in Jordan, then back to Baghdad. Since the show was broad- cast she has received hun- dreds of emails and requests to speak at events around the country. “Most people contacted me to say thank you and to agree with my humanitarian atti- tudes towards refugees,” she said. “The most positive part of the show was the response from school students, who have had their minds opened up to the reality of the refugee crisis.” Gleny Rae will perform at the Darwin Railway Club Swing Night as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival tonight, Nirva- na Restaurant tomorrow night, the Royal Darwin Show on Fri- day and Humpty Doo Hotel on Saturday.
