Parish News

Dear Parishioners, “What is this?” I love that question that the people ask themselves. Jesus comes into their synagogues and teaches them on his own authority, unlike the scribes. The scribes would quote the commentaries and teachers from the past to support their teachings; Jesus simply spoke on his own authority. “What is this?” This question shows the novelty, the uniqueness, of what they saw before them in Jesus Christ. They had seen teachers and prophets and exorcists before, but they had never seen anyone like Jesus. He was something new, something different, and they didn’t know exactly what he was. But we are told that his fame spread throughout the whole region of Galilee. But in saying that his fame spread throughout the region, what do you suppose the people were saying about him, exactly? Probably that he was healing the sick, that he was casting out demons, and maybe even that he was opening up the Scriptures in a way no one had ever done before. That is what they saw, so that is what they reported; that was a shame. These things are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jesus. The people knew of Jesus. He was famous in that region because of what he did. He was their neighbor, the carpenter, the teacher, the healer, the wonderworker. If someone asked them whether or not they knew Jesus, they might say, “Sure, I know him. He’s the one who cured that guy who was blind.” They knew what he did, but they did not know him, and because they did not know him, they could not love him as they should have loved him. Jump ahead two thousand years, and the same situation can still be found. How much of the world knows of Jesus, but does not love Jesus, does not have a relationship with Jesus? This is a pitfall that we all must avoid. We must not be content with being familiar with Jesus, being able to list some things that he once said or did. We must go further and love him. So if someone were to ask us whether or not we know Jesus, we could say, “Yes, I know Jesus. He is the one who loves me so much that he died for me, and who I love in turn because he is Lord. He is the one I receive in the Eucharist. He is the one who I see and I love in my neighbor. He is the one I speak to in the silence of my heart. Jesus is love.” And if we really live this, if we love Jesus and allow that love to touch every aspect of our lives, that, too, will spread. Just as Jesus’ fame spread throughout Galilee because of the wonders he worked, so would love for him spread if we communicated that love to others. That love will compel us to reach out to that classmate or coworker or family member that others avoid. It will compel us to be honest in our business dealings, always making sure that we are being just towards others, especially when we know we could get away with receiving more than we should. It will compel us to protect the weak and the vulnerable, even at the price of our own worldly success. And when we do these things, the people will say, “What is this? This is not what I expected, this is something different.” And then we tell them of our love for Christ. Christ has transformed our lives, and he wants us to spread that Good News abroad. So let us know Christ, love Christ, and watch that love spread throughout the world. –Fr. Liekhus

Each child has a turn to hold something that lights up, while we pray and then glue a bead on a paper that has the rosary printed on it. After several weeks the rosary is filled in and the paper is hung on the bulletin board in the Pre-School room! Jesus, Mary and Joseph are so happy to see these wonderful children taking their prayer time so seriously!

2015 Catholic Services Appeal “BE IMITATORS OF CHRIST” The 2015 Catholic Services

Appeal (CSA) is underway. Many of our parishioners have already received a mailing from the newly established Catholic Services Appeal Foundation

requesting your support of the Catholic Services Appeal. Please respond generously. The Appeal funds services that no one parish or individual can support alone. These services must go on despite these troubled times in our archdiocese. It is important to know that contributions to the Catholic Services Appeal will be used for the benefit of designated ministries of the Appeal. Please visit the new Catholic Services Appeal Foundation website at csafspm.org for more information. When you give to the Catholic Services Appeal you provide food and shelter, education, spiritual support, and sacraments to individuals who are in need, disabled, imprisoned, hospitalized, or in nursing homes. You

help give nearly 2,500 students access to a life-changing Catholic school education their families could not otherwise afford. You support seminarians preparing for the priesthood, make the annual Archdiocesan Youth Day happen, and help fund the evangelization and catechesis initiatives. You help our 65,000 brothers and sisters at the mission parish of Jesucristo Resucitado in Venezuela. You help support Latino ministry for our Spanish speaking brothers and sisters at 23 local parishes. And, when our parish reaches its goal, 25% of all funds received will be returned for use to support ministries in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: “Be Imitators of Christ”. Your gift to the annual Catholic Services Appeal will help to share His message of salvation not only in our parish but throughout our local Church and beyond. Commit to helping the CSA supported ministries. Then, please contemplate God’s gifts to you and reflect on your gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish and vital ministries throughout this local Church is one way to express this gratitude. Thank you.

The Kindergarten kids separate for part of each session to study their special workbook and return for the craft and snack. Then, all together, we pray one decade of the rosary. There is room for more! Contact the Faith Formation Office for more information. Kathleen Esh and Jenni Stankevitz (preschool coordinators)

February 1, 2015 - 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.” 1 Corinthians 7:32 How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough

or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future. If you are not already participating in our 2015 Stewardship efforts to grow in discipleship and be good stewards of the gifts that God has shared with us, Talent Directories and commitment forms are available in the back of the church and in the Parish office.

No importa si quemamos aceite, cera o elec-tricidad. Lo que importa es velar en oración. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
