Twenty-fourth Sunday, Ordinary Time Sunday, September 17, 2017 Page 2

The Scripture readings of this weekend’s liturgy are challenging, extremely challenging. They speak of an essential dynamic that our Catechists must deal with and then teach to our children, our young people, and the adults

in the RCIA. They also speak to each of us as disciples of Jesus Christ. From Sirach: “Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the Lord’s vengeance, for the Lord remembers their sins in de-tail.” Am I harboring any vengeance toward anyone, any group of people? We have all been hurt by others in our lifetime: what needs to be faced and dealt with properly and promptly so as to move forward in peace? From Romans: “None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.” St. Paul adamantly states that Christian disciples live for Christ alone, for “we are the Lord’s”. All of our earthly relationships are seen in the light of our primary relationship with Jesus Christ. Do I need to re-focus my heart to Jesus in order to re-establish right re-lationships with others? From Matthew: “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive?” The painful yet necessary dynamic of forgiving others is at work in all of us. We all have to face, from time to time, the seemingly impossible task of forgiving another. When faced with this, be gentle on yourself and place this struggle into the hands and heart of Jesus. With Him all things are possible, and turning over the struggle to for-give into His hands will bring (over time, sometimes over a long time) the peace that comes from Him alone. We need to support one another to forgive, and not enable others to continue in the misery of non-forgiveness.

What is a Catechist? The word catechist comes from the Greek word “echo”. Catechists echo the Word of God to our parish children. They come from all walks of life and all ages: women, men, confirmed teenagers, parents, grandparents, singles and religious. Catechists are not expert teachers or brilliant theologians, They are ordinary people, just like you, who generously volunteer their time to share our Catholic faith, values and traditions with our youngest generation of Christians. They are positive role models who help children grow in faith and spiritually. What an important ministry! Their gift has tremendous value...because through their word and actions, the message of Christ continues to spread throughout the world.

Is God Calling you to be a Catechist? Do you Love God and want to know him better? Love children and enjoy working with them?

Want to share God’s love with others? Want to be good role model for children? Want to share your faith more and help others grow in faith?

Want to help children develop a relationship with God? Your “yes” answers may mean that God is calling you to be a catechist!

Not confident enough? Still hesitating? Not quite sure if you’re cut out for this very rewarding ministry? Please call Marya Wallace at 949/495-4126 for questions, answers, discussion, and encouragement about being a catechist. We are always here to help, support, and guide you along the way.

The Holy Spirit can and will work through you! Thank you for considering the possibility of volunteering with us. If you know others who would make good catechists, please encourage them to do the same!

Catechetical Sunday 2017

Prayer for Catechists

O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the gospel

to our parish family. We lift them up to you in thanksgiving

and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs.

May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles.

We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing

our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Thanks to Jesus’ choosing at least four fishermen (Peter, Andrew, James and John) to be fisher-man’s art. One example is the scene described in Chapter 4 of Matthew’s Gospel. In that scene, Jesus asks the four fishermen to drop everything and follow him. Peter and Andrew have their nets in the water. James and John are mending their nets, working with their father, Zebedee. According to Matthew, they stop what they’re doing (sorry, Zebedee) and follow Jesus. My favor-ite scene, however, is the one in Chapter 21 of the Gospel of John. This one takes place after Christ has risen from the dead. He is standing on the seashore firing up the barbecue for breakfast with his beloved piscatorial foursome. He asks if they have caught any fish and Peter says no. Lower your net again, Jesus suggests, and see what happens. What happens is they catch so many fish the net is overloaded and they have to call others to help them drag the net ashore. Good thing the net was mended and didn’t break. If the fishermen’s net represents the mind and heart of each of us, and the tons of fish represent God’s limitless grace and blessings, then obviously we need to keep our nets ready and in good re-pair, mending them whenever we get the chance, untangling the knots of selfishness and envy, fix-ing the tears caused by resentment, and clearing out the debris of old hurts and grudges, so that we can receive Our Lord’s love as he invites us to open our hearts, lower our nets and try again.
