“I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times!” For the ancient Israelites the perfect number, the number of perfection so to speak was seven. So, in the interchange between Peter and our Lord it is easy to see where Peter came up with this number seven. Jesus in the course of his teaching is talking about how his disciples are called to repeatedly forgive one another for transgressions, and Peter has to chime in with his two bits of information. You can just see the other disciples roll their eyes, O come on Peter, just let Jesus talk! And Jesus in a kind hearted way notches up what Peter said to a much further degree, one that is saying not to put any earthly limits on forgiveness. Seventy-seven seems an impossible number of times to forgive anyone. You can see the other disciples continuing to roll their eyes, as what Jesus is saying was hard enough to take before being taken to this new extreme. And what Jesus is saying to do is hard, and in all honesty, impossible without the supernatural help of God’s Grace. Jesus says to forgive those who hurt us. Put bluntly, Jesus calls us as disciples to forgive everyone, and that includes those who walk out on us, those who rape us, those who murder our loved ones, those who have stolen from us, those who have maligned our

A Word about the WORD Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA "¡Yo os digo, no siete veces sino setenta y

siete veces!" Para los antiguos Israelitas el número perfecto, el número de perfección por decir era siete. Por lo tanto, en el intercambio entre Pedro y nuestro Señor es fácil ver donde Pedro llego al número siete. Jesús en el curso de su enseñanza está hablando de cómo sus discípulos están llamados a perdonarse repetidamente unos a otros por las transgresiones, y Pedro tiene que mencionar sus dos pedacitos de información. Sólo se ve que los otros discípulos apagan sus ojos, ¡Vamos, Pedro, deja que Jesús hable! Y Jesús, de un modo bondadoso, marca lo que Pedro dijo hasta el último grado, uno que diga que no pongas ningún limite mundano en perdonar. Setenta y siete parece ser un número imposible de veces de perdonar a alguien. Pueden ver a los otros discípulos que continúan de apagar sus ojos, como lo que Jesús estaba diciendo era lo suficientemente duro para tomar, ya antes de ser llevado a este nuevo extremo. In the Company of Saints – Part Two Tucked away in the Northeast Corner of our main church

is the image of Our Lady of Fatima. On October 17, 1946, His Eminence Samuel Cardinal Stritch came to

inaugurate a perpetal Novena in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of Fatima. Cardinal Stritch came again

on May 27, 1948 to dedicate the 32 bell carillon (now gone) and to elevate the church to the rare dignity of being a consecrated temple of God, by anointing it in twelve places with the Sared Chrism, meaning it may

never gain be used for anything else but a church. It is God’s forever. Very interesting! In the altar below the Fatima statue is a stone. There is some remembrance that it contains of relics of Jacinta and Francisco Marta, the two Fatima seers who died very young. However, they were not canonized until this May, so this seems

unlikely, but then, it might be true!

More research is obviously needed. Stay tuned.

Escondido en la esquina Noreste de nuestra Iglesia principal está la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Fátima. El 17 de octubre de 1946, Su Eminencia Samuel Cardenal Stritch vino a inaugurar una Novena perpetua en honor

del Inmaculado Corazón de Nuestra Señora de Fátima. El 27 de mayo de 1948, el Cardenal Stritch volvió a dedicar

a el carillón de las 32 campanas (ya no están) y para elevar a la Iglesia a la rara dignidad de ser un templo

consagrado de Dios, ungiéndolo en doce lugares con el Sared Chrism, significa que nunca puede ser usado para otra cosa que no sea una Iglesia. Es Dios para siempre.

¡Muy interesante! En el altar debajo de la estatua de Fátima hay una piedra. Hay algún recuerdo que contiene reliquias de Jacinta y Francisco Marta, los dos videntes de Fátima que murieron muy jóvenes. Sin embargo, no

fueron canonizados hasta este mes de mayo, por lo que parece

probable, pero entonces, ¡podría ser cierto!

Obviamente se necesita más investigación. Manténganse al tanto.

character, those who have taken away our jobs, and I can go on and on, literally in a limitless fashion.” As disciples’ of Christ we are called to forgive those who hurt us as God forgives us for our transgressions. Practicing forgiveness regularly and with charity for as Christian is fundamental. What is more fundamental that the words of the “Our Father”? This is part and parcel of being a Christian and walking in Christ’s footsteps, who forgave all of us for our transgressions from the Cross. One who say they are a good Christian and does not practice forgiveness like our Lord is not truly a Christian. “I am such a great follower of Christ, but I can’t talk to my brother because he kept all of our family inheritance to himself, and I will never have anything more to do with him every again!” “I am a good Christian, but don’t ask me to pray for the man who raped me when I was a child; there is a special place in hell for that one! I am always suspect of someone who says how good they are. The people I recognize as good never advertise it, but on the contrary are always talking about their faults and failures, and the need to do a better job of practicing the faith.

Who better than St. Augustine, a great sinner before his own conversion to wrap things up for us in a neat fashion. He writes “That your enemies have been created is God's doing; that they hate you and wish to ruin you is their own doing. What should you say about them in your mind? "Lord be merciful to them, forgive them their sins, put the fear of God in them, change them!" You are loving in them not what they are, but what you would have them to become.'

If you pray for those who hurt you, even if they show no repentance in the moment, you have done your part and should forgive them. If your prayers lead them to change and repent and learn to forgive others, then they will find forgiveness from God as well. Sadly, if they do not repent, it is for God to deal with them as He wills.

To close, here is a gem of a story about St. Teresa of Calcutta on how to school your enemies, in a very Christ-like way. One time she entered a bakery, and at her side was a starving girl whom she had found abandoned on the streets. She asked for some bread to feed her. The baker spat in her face! She said “Thank you for the gift for me. How about something for the child?”. She got the bread. This is what “turning the other cheek” can do. Hopefully the baker went on to become a better human being.

It’s hard to say “please forgive me”. Harder yet to say “I forgive you from my heart”. But that is exactly what Our Lord calls us to do.

A Word about THE WORD continued Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA continua nosotros, los que han malignado nuestro carácter, los que nos han quitado nuestros trabajos, y puedo seguir y seguir, literalmente, de una manera ilimitada. "Como discípulos de Cristo, estamos llamados a perdonar a los que nos hieren como Dios perdona nosotros por nuestras transgresiones. Practicar el perdón regularmente y con caridad para como cristiano es fundamental. ¿Qué es más fundamental que de las palabras del "Padre Nuestro"?

El perdón es parte de ser cristiano y caminar en el las huellas de Cristo, que nos perdonó a todos por nuestras transgresiones de la Cruz. Los que dicen que son buenos cristianos y no practican el perdón como nuestro Señor no son verdaderamente cristianos. "Soy un gran seguidor de Cristo, pero no puedo hablar con mi hermano porque él se quedó con toda la herencia de nuestra familia para sí mismo, y nunca tendré nada más que ver con él de nuevo!" "Soy un buen Cristiano, pero no me pidas que ore por el hombre que me violó cuando era niño; hay un lugar especial en el infierno para ese! Siempre soy sospechoso de alguien que dice lo bueno que son. Las personas que reconozco como buenas nunca lo anuncian, pero por el contrario están siempre hablando de sus fallas y fracasos, y la necesidad de trabajar más de mejorar la practicar de la fe.

¿Quién mejor que San Agustín, un gran pecador antes de su propia conversión para explicar las cosas de una manera más ordenada. Él escribe: "Que tus enemigos han sido creados es obra de Dios; que te odien y desean arruinarte es de su propia cuenta. ¿Qué debes decir sobre ellos en tu mente? "Señor, ten misericordia de ellos, perdonadles sus pecados, poned en ellos el temor de Dios, ¡cámbialos!" Tú eres el amor en ellos no lo que son, sino lo que quieres que sean.

Si oras por aquellos que te hacen daño, aunque no muestren arrepentimiento en el momento, has hecho tu parte y debes perdonarlos. Si sus oraciones los llevan a cambiar y arrepentirse y aprender a perdonar a otros, también encontrarán el perdón de Dios. Tristemente, si no se arrepienten, es para Dios tratar con ellos como Él quiere.

Para terminar, aquí está una joya de una historia sobre Santa Teresa de Calcuta sobre cómo educar a tus enemigos, de una manera muy parecida a Cristo. Una vez entró en una panadería, y a su lado había una muchacha hambrienta que había encontrado abandonada en las calles. Ella pidió un poco de pan para alimentarla. ¡El panadero le escupió en la cara! Ella dijo: "Gracias por el regalo para mí. ¿Qué tal algo para la niña? ". Ella tomo el pan. Esto es lo que es "dar la otra mejilla" puede hacer. Esperemos que el panadero se convirtiera en un mar ser humano.

Es difícil decir "perdóname por favor". Más difícil aún de decir "te perdono de mi corazón". Pero eso es exactamente lo que Nuestro Señor nos llama a hacer.
