Pastor’s Letter September 10/11 Dear Parish Family, The church that I grew up in was very different from the church of today. Back then priests and sisters,

and there were plenty of them, took care of just about everything in church life. The laity might help

them out, but it was clear that life in the church resembled life on a cruise ship. The captain and crew

would guide us safely to heaven, our destination. The job of everyone else was to be a good

passenger. We were to pay, to pray, and to obey.

A whole new understanding of church came into being with the Second Vatican Council. While most

Catholics were aware of changes in the Mass, including the use of English and participation of lectors

and ministers, the most profound change was in our understanding of Baptism. In that cruise ship

church, the most important sacrament was Holy Orders because, along with religious profession, it

made a person part of the crew. Vatican II said that the principal sacrament was Baptism because that

made everyone part of the crew. All the other sacraments, including Holy Orders, built on the

fundamental call to serve that is received in Baptism.

Now I have to say there is something nice about life on a cruise ship. One can relax, knowing that

others are doing all the work. But this was not the vision of Jesus. He told his disciples: “I no longer

speak of you as servants because a servant does not know what the master is about. I call you friends

because I have made known to you everything I heard from my father.” No more servants or

passengers! Everyone is part of the crew.

It was wonderful last week to see the response of people to our ministry fair. I am grateful to Jeannine

Rose and Jennifer Ferrantino for explaining the work of their ministries with so much joy and pride. I

can’t tell you how many people expressed an interest in becoming involved. Enthusiastic discussions

gave rise to ideas about some new ministries that will further enrich our parish in the months ahead.

This weekend is another opportunity to become a part of our vibrant community. Being a passenger is

great once and a while but there is much more reward in being part of the crew. Why not join us?

Come aboard!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

News from the Office of Social Ministry:

Jeannine Rose

Are you or someone you know thinking of

coming back to the Church?

If you or someone you know has been away from the

church, and is thinking about coming back, Parish

Center. For more information please call Jeannine Rose in the Social Ministry

Office at 283-0097, Ext. 317. It doesn’t matter where you have been, we are here to

welcome you home.

Catholic Daughters of America Ladies, 18 years of age or older, are invited to consider joining Catholic Daughters of the Americas. We hope to have enough interest to officially start a new court in this parish.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas is one of the largest women’s organizations in the world, and has been in existence since 1903.

Have you ever wondered how you can help the less fortunate in our community? Have you ever wondered how you can play an active role in our church parish, community, state, and nation? Have you ever wondered how you can help people or communities that have faced a tragedy? If you become a Catholic Daughter, you can help minister to these needs. Catholic Daughters reach out to others, lend helping hands, have a great time, gain new friends, offer help and understanding to all. That in itself is awesome! Please consider joining. Please contact Jeannine Rose in the Parish Social Ministry Office for more information.

The Legion of Mary

The purpose of the Legion of Mary is two-fold: The spiritual development of its members and advancing the reign of Christ through Our Lady. The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin, Ireland in September of 1921. It is a lay catholic organization whose members are giving service to the Church on a voluntary basis in almost every country. The object of the Legion of Mary is the Glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. We are interested in forming a praesidium in this parish. A praesidium is a unit of the Legion of Mary which holds a weekly meeting where prayer is intermingled with reports of their work and discussion. Please contact Jeannine Rose in the Parish Social Ministry Office for more information.

Enter the Holy Door of Mercy Sacred Hearts has been chosen as one of four churches in the Diocese

of Rockville Centre to have a Holy Door of Mercy through which

pilgrims may obtain the same

blessings as if they were to visit

the jubilee door at St. Peter’s

Basilica in Rome.

One may walk through this

door at any time but during this

Holy Year of Mercy we will

celebrate Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday from the

conclusion of the noon mass until Benediction at 4:00 PM.

We will also have confessions during this time and our

Spanish community will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We call Parishioners who support

this time of prayer our Anchors of Mercy. If you are willing

to join them please just come any Thursday during those

hours.

Faith and Justice

September 11th is a date marked by horrific violence. It is also a date that cries out for peace.

September 21st is UN International Peace Day, a day for the United Nations—and all of us—

to renew our dedication to the pursuit of peace and a Day of Ceasefire, both personally and

politically. Between these two dates is a special time for peacebuilding. Sunday, September

18th, PCMNY offers a special opportunity to pray, learn, and act for peace. Join us for a

presentation by Alexandra Hiniker, Pax Netherlands Representative to the UN. Her topic,

Promoting Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies from Grassroots to the UN, will focus on

the protection of civilians in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan, including humanitarian

disarmament and arms control policies. Come to 20 Washington Square North in Greenwich

Village. Doors open at 2:30 PM. Presentation begins at 3:00. Adjournment at 5:00 PM.

Amoris Laetitia, §73. Dado en Roma, el 19 de marzo, del año 2016.
