Dear Friends,
This Sunday we hear three parables in the Gospel about God’s mercy and love. The lost sheep, the lost coin and the Prodigal Son have helped shape our religious imagination about God.
They portray the immense generosity of God’s mercy and forgiveness.
By far the one that speaks to me most eloquently is the parable of the Prodigal Son. In my office in the rectory I have a print of Rembrandt’s depiction of the Father embracing the prodigal. I have it there to remind me of how I
identify with each of the three characters at different times as to those who come to see me.
I used to think that this parable was only about the Son who took his inheritance and squandered it. He is the one who is so easy to identify with.
Unfortunately, I witness the same dynamic in families today. When there is a matter of inheritance it often brings out the worst in family members. Greed, self-centeredness, hypocrisy can cause family members to be divided. I’m sure that this was not the intent of the parents.
We are all prodigal in other ways also. Me first; I want it my way; I don’t care about others are all indications that we have strayed. At the different seasons of our lives these can be more pronounced. Sometimes this is obvious, sometimes more hidden.
I think though that the younger son gets the bad rap always. If we focus our attention on the older son, we can see a prodigal nature as well.
Many of us can identify with him. We do what we are supposed to do. We try to drive within the speed limits of life. This at times can lead to a sense of entitlement. We think that like the older son that we deserve good things.
The problem with identifying with the older son is that it can lead to resentfulness. We feel that no one is as deserving of the good things in life as much as we are.
All are in need of God’s unconditional love. All of us are sinners. We need to accept responsibility for our behavior and seek forgiveness of those that we hurt.
The key character in the parable is the Father.
When my brothers and sister and I were children our parents insisted on each of us taking piano lessons. We were only to touch the piano during our 30 minutes of practice each day.
I took piano lessons for six years when the piano teacher called my mother and said that I had no musical ability! I was glad to get out of practicing but to this day I love music and wish I would have stuck with the lessons.
Fast forward years later – I went to visit my parents on a day off. When I walked into the house, I could hear someone pounding on the piano. It was my niece Krissy who was seven at the time. I asked my father if he wanted me to stop her and he looked at me and said, “isn’t she cute”.
We change over time. Our goal is to be more like the Father who is unconditional in a love that really doesn’t make sense but is always available to us.

Bring your Children to the Playground after Mass!
Today, the Renew My Church committee would like to open up the SJB playground after the 9:45 mass, from roughly 10:45-11:30. The idea is to encourage families to attend Mass and provide an opportunity for people to get to
know each other. Come to Mass, give the kids some playground fun time, and chat with other parents and parishioners afterwards. What a great way to kick off your Sunday “hope to see you there!”

We will have a training for altar servers at 9:30am on September 21in the Church. Students from 3rd to 8th grades will be trained. Please encourage your child to participate. This a wonderful opportunity to share their faith and service.

Queridos Amigos,Este domingo escuchamos tres parábolas en el Evangelio sobre la misericordia y el amor de Dios. La oveja perdida, la moneda perdida y el Hijo Pródigo, nos han ayudado a dar forma a nuestra imaginación religiosa acerca de Dios. Describen la inmensa generosidad de la misericordia y el perdón de Dios.Definitivamente, quien me habla con más elocuencia es la parábola del Hijo Pródigo. En mi oficina, en la rectoría tengo una copia imprenta de la representación de Rembrandt del Padre abrazando al hijo pródigo. La tengo allí
para recordarme cómo me identifico con cada uno de los tres personajes en diferentes momentos cuando me reúno con los que vienen a verme.Solía pensar que esta parábola era solo sobre el Hijo que tomó su herencia y la derrochó. Es él con quien es tan fácil identificarse. Desafortunadamente, soy testigo de la misma dinámica en las familias de hoy. Cuando hay una cuestión sobre alguna herencia, a menudo saca lo peor de los miembros de la familia. La avaricia, el egocentrismo, la hipocresía pueden hacer que los miembros de la familia se dividan. Estoy seguro de que esta no fue la intención de los padres.También, todos somos pródigos de diferentes maneras. Solo practicábamos tocando el piano durante 30 minutos diariamente. ¡Tomé clases de piano durante seis años! pero cuando el profesor de piano le llamó a mi madre y le dijo que yo no tenía habilidad musical, me alegré de dejar de practicar, pero hasta el día de hoy, amo la música y desearía haber continuado con las lecciones.Algunos años después fui a visitar a mis padres en mi día libre. Cuando entré en la casa, pude escuchar a alguien aporreando el piano. Era mi sobrina Krissy, quien tenía siete años de edad en ese tiempo. Le pregunté a mi padre si quería que le pidiera que no continuara y me miró y me dijo: “¿No es linda?”Cambiamos con el tiempo. Nuestro objetivo es ser más como el Padre que es incondicional en un amor que realmente no tiene sentido, pero que siempre nos está disponible.

Urban Farmers!Ms. Engel’s 3rd graders have a school garden in conjunction with a grant from the Museum of Science & Industry. They gave most of the harvested veggies to members of the church community so they can enjoy fresh produce, but the class saved a few to make zucchini bread. Reading a recipe, measuring the ingredients, listening to each other and cleaning as a team. At St John Berchmans School learning happens everywhere: in the classroom, in the garden, in the kitchen! We are helping to raise innovative learners and mindful citizens.
Agricultores UrbanosLos alumnos de 3er grado de la Srta. Engel tienen un huerto escolar junto con una subvención del Museo de Ciencia e Industria. Le dieron la mayoría de las verduras cosechadas a algunos miembros de nuestra comunidad para que pudieran disfrutar de productos frescos, pero la clase utilizó algunos para hacer pan de calabaza.
