Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed

your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

Mark your Calendars! Parish Anniversary Celebration In celebration of the founding of our Diocese in 1918, and our parish’s founding in 1952, we will have a special Mass on Sunday, October 21st at 10:00 a.m. A reception in the parish hall will follow. This will mark the 66th anniver-sary of our parish. Reading “Rejoice and Be Glad” Fr. Keith will offer a five week series on Pope Francis’ latest Apostolic Exhortation, “Rejoice and Be Glad” on the call to holiness. Each session will be on Tuesday evening at 6 pm in St. Patrick Church: Oct. 30, & Nov 6, 13, 20 & 27. More details to follow. Friendsgiving in Christ This year, we will be doing our holiday gathering a bit dif-ferently. Instead of a Christmas party, we will celebrate a “Friendsgiving in Christ”, on the Sunday before Thanks-giving (Nov. 18th), after the 10 am Mass. (So save the date!) It will still be a covered dish luncheon, but with a Thanksgiving theme, with the parish providing the meat and drinks. However there will be an entrance fee: one canned good, as we express our gratitude with outreach to the needy in our community. Directed Retreats The Jesuit Spirituality Center offers directed retreats begin-ning on the indicated dates: Thus., Sep 20; Mon. October 1 or Thursday, October 4. Mon. October 15 or Thursday, October 18. Participants may choose an 8-day, 5-day, or 3-day option. The center specializes in these personally di-rected retreats, which are based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. Solitude and silence are important aspects of the retreat experience. Baby Items-Women's Center Some of you may have noticed that the 'bassinet' for baby items is now out every weekend. This is to make it easier for those who want to support new mothers in bringing their children into the world, at the Women's Center and their maternity home. Here is a list of items that are al-ways needed: Paper towels; Liquid washing detergent (baby & adult); 13 gal trash bags; Deodorant; Windex; Pledge; Lysol; Shampoo; Conditioner; Bath Soap; Liquid dish washing gel; Ziplock bags; Gift cards for maternity clothes, etc.; Baby power & lotion; Diaper rash ointment; Baby wash; Diapers (size 4 & 5). Add one or two of these items to your shopping list each month, leave it in the car, and drop it off when you come to church. We will publish this list once a month. “Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person’s heart; we simply need to follow where he leads.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities

Centennial News 50 Year old Parish— In our Centennial \ Year, only one parish is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. In 1968, St. Pius X Church was designated a parish commu-nity. A small building on Kaliste Saloom Road had served as a mission church since 1959. In the first 50 years of the Diocese of Lafayette, 68 church parishes were established. After St. Pius in 1968, only 8 other churches would be established as a parish in the Dio-cese over the following 50 years. On October 5, 2017, the new St. Pius X Church was dedicated by Bishop Deshotel. The massive structure is a far cry from the original warehouse used in 1968. Centennial Fest—Honoring our Diocesan Centennial with our young people throughout the Diocese of Lafa-yette, we will have a Youth Gathering at Parc Inter-national Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, October 20th from 3pm to 8pm and will include Music, Guest Speakers, Mass, Food and closing with a Candlelight Eucharistic Adoration with Bishop Deshotel. Liturgical Roles for September

From the Pastor’s Desk

Last week in this space, I shared thoughts from Pope Francis on the importance of private, solitary prayer in our lives. This private prayer is essential to nurturing our relationship with God, and it greatly enriches our common prayer, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. Quoting St. John of the Cross, the Holy Father re-minded us of the possibility of being in the very presence of God, that one might ‘attach your heart to him’. He says, “For this to happen, however, some moments spent alone with God are also necessary.”

I doubt seriously that anyone reading this will disagree. Take a poll, and you’ll find few people who would say, ‘No, I’m against private prayer’. Quite to the contrary, we approve of it, we recognize its importance, and perhaps we even long for private prayer in our lives. Then why is it often so hard to make it happen?

The first thing we can say is that time dedicated to daily, private prayer doesn’t just materialize out of thin air. We have to literally make it happen. And that takes things like effort and discipline. Our lives can be chaotic and unpredictable. Our feelings are sometimes all over the map — ‘I just don’t feel like praying today’. And it is in the face of those challenges that discipline and commitment to daily prayer can carry us through.

Those who know about such things often talk about having a set time for prayer. Yes, you can pray any-time you choose. There is no one time when God will be listening, and we have to be praying at that time, or no-body will hear us. But experience shows that choosing to pray just anytime, or when I have time, results in pray-er just not happening. Again, this takes effort, and not just a one-time decision. It’s a practice that requires ongo-ing commitment. When I establish a “prayer time”, and stick with it, then at that time, my mind and body and soul know that this is time to spend quietly with God, and the time is richer and fuller.

It is also recommended that one choose or create a regular place for daily prayer. Yes, you can pray any-where. But experience shows that a place away from distractions, and set aside for prayer just works better. That way, when your never-silent brain starts asking, “What am I doing here?”, the answer is clear. Since I’m in my prayer place, I must be here to pray.

And how to pray? That will depend. Pray as you can. Pray in the way that works for you. Ask God to show you how to pray. We never stop ‘learning how’ to pray, because at root we are building and nurturing a re-lationship with God, which never ends. Ask for God’s guidance, and your very learning to pray itself becomes a prayer, reaching out to the God who dwells within. What matters is not how, but that we pray.
