A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
Every great once and awhile I come across an image that really sticks with me, and not only that but some of these images really go to demonstrate how truly deep and inexhaustible the Sacred Scriptures really are. We can never say that we have said it all. Ever. Currently I am reading The Ascetical Homilies of St. Isaac the Syrian, and currently I am questioning the practicality of reading this material first thing in the morning as part of my daily spiritual reading. It is dense writing for sure and not the kind of stuff you can easily digest immediately upon waking up. But enough of that. The other day I was arrested by a phrase, by an image that St. Isaac used that has really captured my imagination. He said, and I am going to paraphrase, that Noah built the ark during a time of peace using the timbers of trees that he planted a hun-dred years earlier, and when the storm came, he was saved. The essence of his teaching has to do with spiritually preparing for the inevitable assault of temptations that are going to come our way. The advice is old and very familiar, but for me the image used by St. Isaac is new, and for that reason very de-lightful. Acquiring the virtue we need to withstand temptation does not happen by accident, nor is it acquired by simply want-ing it and asking God for it, “oh God, make me more patient, pleeease!” It is, for the lack of a better description, an art, an art that requires humility, self-knowledge and a habit of prayer. During the times of peace, it is most useful to go back over past failures, those times when temptation caught us in its trap, having found us unprepared and therefore defenseless. In going back we ask the Holy Ghost to show us how our pride and self-love was involved in our downfall, and we recreate the scene in our memory, vigorously renouncing our vice, imagining a bet-ter outcome, a virtuous outcome. Then we ask God for the grace we need based on the new insight we now have into the hidden Continued on next page…

motives and machinations of our pride and self-love. And so be-gins the work of one by one and little by little working towards the better practice of the virtues. It is important to begin the project of acquiring the virtues by picking one, usually the one that we need to the most, instead of trying to tackle many at the same time. And we begin by tilling the soil (humility gained by self-knowledge) in our prayer so that we might prepare it to receive the seed (God’s grace) of the tree (virtue) we intend to plant. With the use of our memory and im-agination, governed vigilantly with the use of reason formed by the Word of God, we set about planting and nurturing the trees (virtues) that we need for the planks required to build an ark, a fortress of grace within which we may take shelter during times of temptation. The ark was not built in a day. Maybe for the time being all we have is a skinny canoe carved from a single tree, or perhaps a raft built of twigs and branches, that does not matter, and it is only our lack of humility that makes us impatient with ourselves and desperate and distracted in our prayers. The point is, make good use of the times of peace that God grants to us, the times of peace that provides us with opportunity to, now I am going to mix my metaphors, build our house on solid rock that can withstand the lashing winds and rains of the trials and tribulations that are sure to come during our pilgrimage in this valley of tears. God bless, Fr. Kevin Christofferson

God wanted man to know him somehow through his creatures, and since no creature could fit-tingly reflect the infinite perfection of the Creator, he multiplied his creatures and gave a certain good-ness and perfection to each of them so that from them we could judge the goodness and perfection of the Creator, who embraces infi-nite perfection in the perfection of his one and utterly simple essence.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Collect Look upon us, O God, Creator and ruler of all things, and, that we may feel the working of your mercy, grant that we may serve you with all our heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Prayer over the Offerings Look with favor on our supplications, O Lord, and in your kind-ness accept these, your servants’ offerings, that what each has offered to the honor of your name may serve the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord. Prayer after Communion
May the working of this heavenly gift, O Lord, we pray, take possession of our minds and bodies, so that its effects, and not our own desires, may always prevail in us. Through Christ our Lord.

When we appeal to the throne of grace we do so through Mary, honoring God by honoring His Mother, imitating Him by exalting
her, touching the most responsive chord in the sacred heart of Christ with the sweet name of Mary.
