Grandparents Day Blessing

God of our ancestors,

we thank you for our children

and our children's children.

They are reminders from you about how precious life

can be.

We humbly ask for wisdom and patience as we take

pride and wonder in our grandchildren.

Those of us who now pray to you

also seek your blessing upon these men and women

who are our grandparents or who act in place of

grandparents.

Bless all the children and their parents and

grandparents

with your abundant grace.

We ask all this through the intercession of

Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed

Virgin Mary,

patron saints of grandparents,

in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Page 5: September 12, 2021 Twenty Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time

September 12, 2021-24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We need to get our bearings straight and properly lay life’s cornerstone. Otherwise, the rest of our journey will be

skewed, and our judgment clouded. We can recall Jesus’ famous rebuke of Peter, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Even he, as one of Jesus’ closest friends struggles with understanding things and grasping the big picture. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) a renowned and learned French Jesuit priest often has these words attributed to him: “We are not human beings having

a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Whether they were actually from his lips, they certainly mimic his thought. These wise words orient us and capture the essence of who we really are.

Many people consider spirituality an option. It is no wonder that they come to this conclusion when they

predominantly define themselves using human terms and concepts. Immersed in this world view, they struggle

finding any semblance of God because God does not work according to human expectations! This is especially true

when suffering and death enter life’s picture. If we are only human beings having a spiritual experience, then we

wrongly expect our spirituality to serve us as we desire. The human expectation is that my spiritual life is

something that is useful in avoiding pain, hardship, and death, not something that gives the courage to live through

it!

So, when we protest and get upset with God because our journey is becoming difficult, painful, treacherous,

disappointing, and even pointing us toward death, Jesus rebukes us as he did Peter and gently reminds us how to

see. It is God who inspires and opens hearts to see truth and beauty. In God, the true meaning of things is understood,

and we receive a depth of insight and understanding that is not found following purely human paths. It is not our task

to understand God, as God is beyond human understanding. Ours is the joyful privilege of simply resting in God’s

presence simply because God is God and we are who we are. As spiritual beings having an exciting and adventurous

human experience, it is in our DNA to do so. Through prayer we can let go and let be. This is how we lose our

lives but then save them. ©LPi

Sharing the Gospel with Children:

Jesus was the king, the Messiah that

God's people had been waiting for.

In today's Gospel reading, the

disciples were confused. If Jesus

was the king, why was he saying he

would die soon? Jesus' friends did not understand

yet that by dying on the cross, Jesus would save

them from their sins.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for coming to save me from

my sins.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of Jesus carrying his cross.

Mission for the Week

With your family, talk about what you would

enjoy if you were a king or queen. Tell how Jesus

was different from other kings.

Intercessions for Life

September 12th-24th Sunday In Ordinary

For solidarity and peace in our global human

family: that we may work together to protect

the lives of those who are most vulnerable;

We Pray to the Lord

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS FOR ALL 3

PARISHES

Greetings:

Here we are almost halfway through this glorious

month of September. In September we are given

many feast days to celebrate. September 8th, we

celebrated the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On

September 21 we will celebrate the feast of

St Mathew the Apostle. September 29th we will

remember and celebrate the feast of the

Archangels- St Michael, St Gabriel, and St Raphael.

But this upcoming week we commemorate one very

special and important feast day. On Tuesday we

celebrate the feast associated with one very special

piece of wood. On September 14th we celebrate the

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The one symbol most often identified with Jesus and

his Church is the cross. This feast traces its beginning to

Jerusalem and the dedication of the church built on

the site of Mount Calvary in 335. But the meaning of

the cross is deeper than any city, any celebration, any

building. The cross is a sign of suffering, a sign of

human cruelty at its worst. But by Christ’s love shown in

the Paschal Mystery, it has become the sign of

triumph and victory, the sign of God, who is love itself.

Believers have always looked to the cross in times of

suffering. People in concentration camps, in prisons, in

hospitals, in any place of suffering and loneliness,

have been known to draw, trace, or form crosses and

focus their eyes and hearts on them. The cross does

not explain pain and misery. It does not give us any

easy answers. But it does help us to see our lives united

with Christ’s.

We often make the Sign of the Cross over ourselves.

We make it before prayer to help fix our minds and

hearts on God. We make it after prayer, hoping to

stay close to God. In trials and temptations, the cross is

a sign of strength and protection. The cross is the sign

of the fullness of life that is ours. At Baptism, too, the

Sign of the Cross is used; the priest, parents, and

godparents make the sign on the forehead of the

child. A sign made on the forehead is a sign of

belonging. By the Sign of the Cross in Baptism, Jesus

takes us as his own in a unique way.

So, as we begin the journey with our families into this

upcoming week it may be a good idea for us to all

pause a moment and take another look at the cross

and then as we sign ourselves keep in mind the

significant role this small piece of wood has

undoubtedly played in the story of Salvation History.

God Bless

Deacon Jay
