After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusaders in 1149. Today also commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in 335: the discovery of the “true cross” by St. Helena, Constantine’s mother, in 326. According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan temple that had been erected on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross in succession, the last of which healed her. Helena ordered that this cross be divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent to Constantinople and Rome. The pieces in Jerusalem and Constantinople were ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until eventually it was scattered around the world. Of course, the significance of the true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore. As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today? —Rev. SHEPHERD’S VOICE

EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

God sent his Son into the world so that we might receive life and salvation. Today on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross we proclaim the Good News that God transforms suffering and death into new life. Our God is a God of victory who reigns victorious, even over the evil of death. As Christians, today we rejoice in the mystery of the Cross, which brings about our freedom, salvation, and life.

Let’s take a look at our readings: From our first reading - a tired and discouraged Israel let themselves slip into a rebellious attitude toward God and his servant Moses. God punished them through the bites of poisonous serpents. Only then did they acknowledge their sin. God in his mercy, allowed them to be healed by looking on that which was the source of their death, now raised up at his command.

From the Responsorial Psalm 78, the source of difficulties described in the First Reading was precisely that Israel forgot the works of the Lord. The Psalmist has learned from their experience and calls on all who hear him do likewise.

From the Second Reading, this early Christian hymn acclaims the self-emptying of Christ, who, relinquishing his heavenly glory, became as one of us that he might show us the way to God-through his obedience, Passion, and Resurrection.

From our Gospel, Jesus’ words to Nicodemus recall the incident heard about in today’s First Reading. The Greek verb translated as lifted up means both “to raise up as on a staff or a cross” and “to exalt.” John presents the “lifting up” of Jesus on the Cross as his “lifting up” in glory. Jesus crucified and exalted Son of Man has become the source of our salvation and life.

The depth of God’s love for the world becomes fully revealed in the death of Jesus on the cross. The Father did not give over the Son to die, but he did give him to us so that we might share in his risen Life. Through the self-emptying obedience of Jesus, the cross, a sign of ignominy, becomes a sign of exaltation-not only of Jesus himself whom God lifts up in glory (second reading) but to eternal life (gospel). Jesus being lifted up on the cross means we can share in the Son’s eternal glory. The challenge of this feast and its readings is to see through the cross to the eternal Life that it promises. The way to this eternal Life is through humble obedience (second reading) and through believing in God’s “only Son” (from our gospel). The question the gospel leaves with us is, how much do we believe?

The human tendency is to flee that which brings pain, suffering and death. The mystery of the cross challenges us to enter these as the means to Life. This mystery doesn’t make it any easier to accept pain, suffering, and death; it does give these natural human experiences meaning and depth. No one would choose suffering and death as positive elements in their lives. Yet we Christians regularly deny ourselves for the good of others. But, like Jesus, we don’t empty ourselves for the sake of pain and suffering; we accept these for the sake of new Life. Like Jesus, the cross calls us to obedience and belief.

Both obedience and belief draw their efficacy by being in relationship with another. Jesus is the model for our embracing the cross as both dying to self and rising to glory. Herein is the mystery: in dying to self, in self-emptying, we are more perfectly conformed to Christ. And this is the whole goal of Christian life: conformity to Christ. Thus we can rightly say, in the very dying is the rising; in the self-emptying is the new Life; in the suffering is the glory. This is why this day is rightly named the EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS.

Your shepherd,

Fr. Roni Villamor

Picture of Thomas & Mary Arceneaux with Deacon Mike

We are kicking off our 3rd year! Young ladies in grades 6-12 are invited to join us. This year we are offering two opportunities each week for girls to attend Fidelis.

Sundays, beginning September 7th from 6-8PM @ St. Joseph, Rec. Center

Wednesdays, beginning September 3rd from 4PM-6PM @ OLOR, Saltillo Room

Our RUSH period is the month of September. Parents are encouraged to attend the first meeting to receive detailed information, register the girls, and pay dues.

A CALL FOR PRAYER PARTNERS

Soon forty eleventh grade students will begin their journey toward re-

ceiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Prayer Partners will again remember them with messages and prayer cards given out in their classes each month. Because the number of Confirmation candidates is larger this year, we are asking that more of you volunteer to be a prayerful person in the life of one of these students. Those of you who have been Prayer Partners before will soon receive your assigned student’s name. If you would like to join in this ministry, just call Mary Rabb at 985 258-7778 for an assignment. Many thanks to you all for being dedicated to our young people. You will be blessed.

We are looking for boys and girls in grades 4-12 who would like to answer the call of serving the Lord on the Altar.

M S :

The mission of the Altar Server Ministry is to provide girls and boys of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church par-ish and Holy Rosary Catholic School an opportunity to serve the presiding priests and our parish community at Mass, in that way, develop a deeper appreciation of the celebration of the Eucharist, and be of service to our Christian community.

Houma Life Chain The annual Houma Life Chain will be held on Respect Life Sunday, October 5, 2014 from 2-3 P.M. (rain or shine). This year’s Life Chain is in memory of a great Pro-Lifer, Mrs. Shirley Watkins. Those participating will line up along the median of Tunnel Boulevard in Houma and stand prayerfully, silently holding Life Chain signs. Pick up signs at Mr. Ronnie’s Donuts. Join with other pro-life Christians to make a statement to our community that “ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN”.
