D F ,

Peace and all Good!

Our Lord Jesus Christ begins his public mission in Caper‐naum. This was a very special place for Jesus for it was there that he was provided with a home; the home of Simon and Andrew where he stayed as family when he would return from his apostolic ministry. Jesus teaches in the synagogue and frees an unclean spirit. His word had extraordinary power of convic on; a word spoken with authority and strength. For the people of that day and age, the act of Jesus expelling unclean spirits was an evident sign of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. Jesus revealed the love of a merciful and saving Father. Jesus came to eliminate and expel everything that oppressed and enslaved people. From what unclean spirits or oppressions should the Word of Jesus save us now? From lies, selfishness, discrimina on, ambi ons of power, of violence, and of all vices. Jesus offers us freedom, let us turn to him with every confidence to receive his wisdom, strength, love, and mercy. This coming week we will celebrate two important fes vi es. The Feast of the Presenta on of the Lord on February 2 and St. Blaise on February 3. At both daily Masses on Friday, the 2nd, we will bless candles in honor of the feast day as well as hold a procession at the 7:30 a.m. Mass. And on the 3rd we will hold the Blessing of Throats a er 7:30 a.m. daily Mass. Please see the next column for details. Lastly, unfortunately Fr. Vince has been ill with the flu and had to cancel a bible study class this past week. We are sorry for the inconvenience and pray for his ongoing recovery to con nue with the remaining classes. May everyone have a blessed week.

Love,

Fr. Francisco

FEAST OF THE PRESENATION OF THE LORD Friday, February 2, 2018

This Friday, we will celebrate the beau ful Feast of the Presenta on of the Lord in the Temple. This feast is also called Candlemas since we bless and light candles on this day as a reminder that Jesus is the “light for the na ons.” This sparked the tradi on of blessing enough candles to last an en re year and to have candle processions in churches and streets.

At the 7:30 a.m. daily Mass in the Parish Chapel we will distribute candles, have a procession and blessing along with the blessing of candles you bring from home. At the 12:00 p.m. daily Mass in Mission Church there will be a blessing of candles you bring from home.

ST. BLAISE—THE BLESSING OF THROATS Saturday, February 3, 2018 a er the 7:30 a.m. Mass

In the tradi on of the Church, on the feast day of St. Blaise, we offer the Blessing of Throats to remember him saving a child from choking. We will offer the blessing a er the 7:30 a.m. daily Mass.

We ask that everyone be understanding and consider‐ate during a period of any illness and do what they can to take care of their health.

Thank you for your kindness to your sisters and broth‐ers in our efforts to prevent the spread of the flu.

S T E W A R D S H I P T H O U G H T

In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed. By their bap sm, Chris an stewards realize they are called to do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day. As we bring closure to the beginning of this new year, now is a good

me to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our insecuri es and fear so that we can share the Gospel authorita vely and work to heal at least one wounded rela onship in the coming months ahead.

QUERIDOS AMIGOS,

Actual Presupuesto Debajo/Sobre

$31,373.22 $30,695.32 $677.90

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fas ng (the ea ng of one main meal and two small‐er meals with no in‐between snacks) applies to those between ages 21‐59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fas ng. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abs nence (the exclusion of meat for the en re day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abs nence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do penance and mor fica on as an expression of gra ‐tude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an a empt to re‐spond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA
