FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 3, 2019

Human Trafficking Mary Jo Robbins ~ Director of Social Ministries

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. Locally, there are programs such as Living in Liberty, that address this issue in the Pittsburgh area. It may be hard to imagine, but human trafficking (sex and labor trafficking) occurs everywhere. Major sporting events, such as today’s Super Bowl, cause an increase in sex trafficking (prostitution). Labor trafficking occurs when workers are not paid sufficiently to maintain an independent life—-not enough funds or no funds for housing, transportation, etc. This leaves that worker at the mercy of the employer for food and shelter, and no financial ability to leave and find a better situation.

Visit the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops website (usccb.org) and search human trafficking for much more information on what is being done to support victims, both nationally and internationally. If you know of someone who may need immediate assistance, contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Movies do their best, even in science fiction, to make things as real as possible. Characters are to be believable and real. There are times when the actor actually “becomes” the char-acter. That is, becomes so real that it is hard to the viewer to see them as anyone else but THAT character. For exam-ple, to me George C. Scott is Patton, and Julie Andrew is Maria von Trapp and no one, except Judy Garland and maybe Jimmy Durante, should sing Somewhere Over the Rain-bow ever again. For me and perhaps for some other folks, the actor becomes the embodiment of the character, alive and well. St. Luke does a similar thing to Jesus. Today’s gospel is a continuation of last Sunday’s story of Jesus in the syna-gogue. You recall that Jesus reads from Isaiah and then announces his arrival as the fulfillment of those ancient promises. Jesus first lays out his mission to bring glad tid-ings and so on, and then actually becomes the embodiment of his mission. From that point onward, St. Luke wants us to see Jesus with the evangelist’s minds eye. Jesus becomes his own mission; proclaiming the Good News and bringing sight to the blind. At first the people were amazed at his knowledge but then it occurred to them, he was one of them – a carpenter in their own village! Up to this point in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is seen as Son of God and Son of Mary, and everything is neat and tidy. Today he announces the “Social Gospel” of taking care of the poor, freeing the oppressed, and providing care to the blind. The initial relationship with Jesus (Son of God, and Son of Mary) has expanded to the Kingdom. In a way, Jesus tells his hometown crowd—”This is what I stand for!” It is not received well. As 21st century disciples, we have to remain open to the unexpected, for it simply might be the plan of God.

Adult Faith Formation: The Gospel of St. Luke II begins this week Tuesday Morning, February 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the John XXIII Room, and continues Thursday Evenings at 8:00 p.m. at the Balkey home. [email protected]

MOVIN’ ON UP We have now completed more than three months of merged

music ministries through On Mission. For the past few weeks, all

of our choirs were on post-Christmas break which allowed us

time to begin moving things around and taking inventory of the

music department in each building. It’s been a daunting task of

packing up choral libraries, sheet music, song books, old

hymnals, portable instruments, music stands and other

equipment, while relocating two offices and expanding

departmental space from three rooms to five at the St. Teresa

campus. Music ministries now has an entire wing off of Schoppol

Hall which allows us to house everything together in one

location. This will make our offices far more organized as all of

our choirs and programs continue to grow. Although we rotate

church buildings for various liturgies every week, having a

“home base” makes life much easier knowing that all of the

books and resources we need are filed in the same place.
