Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 3, 2013 Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. — 1 Corinthians 13:13 AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words.

Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love.

LENT 2013 (Part I) Lent is only ten days away (February 13th). During these days before Lent and during the forty days of Lent, we will be tempted not to make Lenten Resolutions or to keep them on the road to Easter. Next week I will share with you more fully our Catholic pilgrimage through Lent. Some people get easily discouraged and don't finish the Lenten Journey with Christ. For Christ each day is a new beginning . . . . . . . "Walk with me today" is what He asks of us. As one day spent with the

Lord is life giving, so one Lenten season with the Lord is a blessing forever. Fr. Michael McKeon has promised to celebrate daily Mass for Lent. So, St. Teresa of Avila will have Mass at 6:30am and 8:30am, Monday through Friday. The Black Book—our 5 minute meditation book, will be available next Sunday. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated every Friday night. Ecumenical Services will be held each Wednesday night beginning at St. Teresa's on Ash Wednesday night at 7pm. There are three parts to our Lenten Journey—Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We journey with Christ as a community, but we also need to spend private time with the Lord. Ash Wednesday is on February 13th, let us get ready for Lent and Easter 2013. God Bless, Fr. Mike

CALLED TO MINISTRY: Our Liturgy Director, Jean Sawyer is taking a two week break, but I promise you all training will take place before St. Patrick's Day. If you missed Ministry Sunday . . . . Our green Ministry Guides are available in our Church. Please call the appropriate numbers. I have always heard "Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can, sometimes in a woman but never in a man."

Giggles: How many angels can fit in a Honda? — All of them. Scripture says "All my Angels shall sing my praises in one Accord."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Teacher: "If there are eight flies on my desk and I hit one with a ruler, how many are left?" Johnny Murphy: "The squashed one."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A young student asked her teacher "Do all fairy tales begin with... Once upon a time?" "No" replied the teacher. "Some begin with . . . If I am elected."

'celebrating the work' Annual Catholic Appeal

2013 to support social services, seminarians, Catholic education and parish social service ministries

Approximately 100,000 Catholic households in the diocese are receiving advance notice of the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal through a brochure and envelope sent to them by The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Sacramento. The weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal collection in parishes is Feb. 9-10. With the theme, “Celebrating the Work,” the Annual Catholic Appeal will celebrate all of the good works of faith done by the people of the diocese – donors, volunteers and parishioners – united in their belief in the Eucharist. “All this good work is possible because we together are the body of Christ. Each one of us does our part so that all of us can do many good things in the Diocese of Sacramento,” says Bishop Jaime Soto. Generous contributions to last year’s Annual Catholic Appeal from some 28,000 donor households totaled more than $3.5 million, the highest response in the history of the appeal. Contributions helped social service programs assist the ever-growing numbers of those overwhelmed with challenges to provide basic necessities for their families; helped families apply for tuition assistance so their children could have a Catholic education; helped seminarians devote themselves fully to their studies as they prepare to serve as diocesan priests; and assisted parishes to provide for a wide array of local community needs.

At Masses throughout the diocese on the appeal commitment weekend, parishioners will view a DVD (in English and Spanish) featuring Bishop Soto and other parish and charities’ leaders, as well as some of the people who are helped by programs that the Annual Catholic Appeal partially supports. The appeal will help fund more than 20 different charitable organizations, which operate more than 100 different social service programs. Twenty-five percent of gross receipts will be returned to the 105 parishes in the diocese for their local social service ministries. Fifty percent of the net proceeds will go to social service programs. The remaining 25 percent will support seminarians’ education and the diocesan needs-based assistance fund for families desiring a Catholic school education for their children but cannot afford it.
