Parish Mission Statement

We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

Dear Beloved Parishioners,

The president and our governor have both provided guidelines regarding the gradual process to resume the activities from which we’ve refrained in the effort to slow the spread of the Coronavirus. Last week, President Trump presented the “Opening Up America Again” federal guidelines and last evening Gov. Sisolak presented his plan that will follow the process outlined to those guidelines. This is a three phase process of opening up the country. But before a state commences with Phase One, certain criteria need to be met, among them a steady and discernible decline in the number of Covid-19 cases over a period of 14 days. There can be no fixed date; while models project when cases will possibly peak, there is no certainty until actual, sustainable data indicate the state’s on a decline.

While there is still uncertainty, the Federal guidelines do provide us with important information so that we could start planning for the day when Phase One commences and houses of worship, our churches, can open and resume gatherings for liturgy with “strict physical distancing”. Given the necessary precautions, resumption of liturgies will not be a simple affair but will require a great deal of planning. I have drawn up an initial plan for this process and I discussed it with the Priest Council last week. Subsequent to that discussion, I have discussed and shared it with the Pastoral Council on Monday and we have begun preparations.

While for us Phase One will commenced on the 9th of May, it is never too early to prepare. We need to assess the capacity for each church and mission for seating with strict physical distancing, namely six feet apart, front, back and sides. We have information on last year’s October count for each Mass, so this can be a guide. There will be other needs, such as cleaning supplies, all surfaces such as pews, seats, door knobs/handles, etc., which need to be disinfected after each Mass and those who do so, need gloves and facial masks. We will be coordinating an inventory of needed supplies such as cleaning products, masks, gloves, hand sanitizer dispensers, and tape to section off seats for the purpose of physical distancing. Many of these supplies are in demand and difficult to obtain. At this point, this involves much planning, research for available supplies and at an extra expense.

There have been many of you who were extremely generous during the last eight weeks. I humbly ask for your generosity towards this unexpected and unprecedented need. This is pivotal to the opening of our Church in Phase 2 & 3.

My plan will also provide information regarding Confirmation and other sacraments. We will also need to stay in communication. All of us need to respond in a timely fashion as we move to resume the life of our parish communities. Keep watching our website at www.stteresaofavila.net for the latest updates.

We live in the hope that the Risen Lord gives us. Take care and God Bless. Fr. Tom

We have approximately 2000 registered families. Our weekly expenses are over $22,000.

Senior luncheons are cancelled for May and June. See you in the fall. Stay safe and well!

May is the Month of Mary traditionally in our Church. We hope you are able to renew and rededicate yourself to the protection and care of our Mother Mary. We ask her to intercede on our behalf for help as exhorted by our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Please try to pray the Holy Rosary every day with your family during this month. Imagine at least 1000 families from our parish praying the rosary! Through our efforts we ask for the protection and Grace from the Lord through our Mother Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. On Mondays through Fridays on Facebook Live, Sister Marie is leading the rosary beginning at 1 PM. We hope you are able to join us to ask the Blessed Mother to pray for us.

Background on this Sunday’s Gospel Reading Today's Gospel again comes from the Gospel of John. Like last week, today we hear words spoken by Jesus before his death and Resurrection. Jesus is teaching at the Last Supper. John's Gospel does not include an institution of the Eucharist narrative; instead, Jesus washes his disciples' feet. Immediately after, Jesus predicts his betrayal by Judas. Today's Gospel follows that prediction. It can be read as a continuing explanation of Jesus' act of washing his disciples' feet. It begins with the announcement that this is the moment when the Son of Man will be glorified. This theme continues

throughout John's Passion. Jesus will be glorified in his death on the cross and in his Resurrection, and the disciples will glorify Jesus in the love they show.

Greetings from the Business office: On May 1st we received the news and the funding of the Payroll Protection Program through the federal CARES act. This will help us fund the payroll for eight weeks for the parish staff as well as the school staff, aides, and teachers. We are very thankful that

this funding was granted to non-profit churches as the Diocese does not pay into unemployment for its employees. We are also very thankful to the wonderful parishioners who continue to mail in their contributions and to set up and give online. As you are probably aware, Nevada is now in Phase I of the re-opening of businesses as of May 9th. Although we aren't sure when we can re-open and start celebrating Mass again, we are busy preparing for that wonderful day. Anyone who would like to designate funds for cleaning supplies and re-opening supplies, please note that on your check or on the special instructions of online giving. Nancy Haffey, Business Manager

Our RCIA program is still meeting weekly, but not in the traditional way of getting together. We meet together on Zoom each Thursday evening for about an hour. This week Fr. Tom is joining us to answer some questions we have as well as to touch base on how things are going. Next week we plan to focus on the rosary. We will be talking about the rosary as well as pray the Luminous Mysteries. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we walk on this path toward full initiation into the Catholic Church.

A MESSAGE FROM DEACON TONY CARRASCO

Teri and I and our two children are all doing fine. As with so many others, not seeing them has been difficult just as it has been difficult not receiving Eucharist, being present to our church community and not teaching our Confirmation classes. I truly miss the communal part of our Faith experience and I am most grateful for the Liturgy of the Hours which provides that communal connection with all clergy and religious throughout the world.

This prayer routine has carried me through many difficult times. During the last fifteen of my thirty years of service as a chaplain within penal institutions, I have prayed my breviary openly as I walked the yards and my intentions have grown to a litany of names taking well over an hour to name. I’m fortunate to live above the college where there are ample nature trails where I walk my dog while reciting my prayers and my intentions. It’s wonderful to be enjoying the splendor of nature while conversing with God.

Recognizing the dignity of all of God’s people has been a driving force in my approach to ministry. Since retiring from Lovelock Correctional Center I launched “Homeward Bound Mentoring”, a pen pal ministry where I receive letters from the inmates and respond with encouraging letters and spiritual articles keyed to the Liturgical season as a means of supporting their spirituality within the prison. I have received close to a hundred letters and have responded with over 360 letters to date. As I hear of their potential release, we keep close correspondence as a means of providing guidance when they are out. I presently have 20 men and one woman who are out. Most have some religious affiliation which provides moral grounding and most all are doing really well. I am most proud of their achievements and I keep contact with visits (now paused) phone calls and by e-mail and I also send periodic letters with attachments to aid in their spiritual development.

I presently have two parents of inmates included in my roles. I work with them by providing letters of reference to aid in the parole and probation hearings for their sons. I also have another 3 inmates due for parole board hearings in the coming months. The relaxing of my duties at Saint Teresa of Avila has allowed me to increase my activity towards helping this segment of our society and has also freed me up to take an on-line Zoom class on “The Synoptic Gospels” as part of my on-going education for the Diocese of Orange.

The most significant growth in my spirituality has been in the Vocation of my Marriage. My wife Teri works part time and has been attempting to do more and more of her work from home. This has allowed for greater interaction and communication between us which has promoted a closer walk in our shared calling. Every aspect of our lives together has blossomed as we both put into perspective the really important things in our lives. We will all get through this and we must all face whatever comes with Faith and with Trust.

Staying Home/Shelter in Place

Now that Governor Sisolak has begun the process of "opening up" the state we are, I am sure, all looking forward to getting back to normal. But what is normal? We hear that the way things were is not going to be the way things will be. To use the phrase that is popular - we will be seeing a "new normal". While most of us were, and maybe

still are, staying home or "sheltering in place" there is a population in this world that could not "stay home". We call them the "Homeless" or "Street People". Taking special care, wearing mask, gloves, sanitizers, I still tried to respond to their needs. Those living on the streets still need to be cared for and recognized. They, along with the rest of us, have the same fears and concerns for their health and the health of their friends. They try to be safe and "shelter in place" (in a sleeping bag or tent). The volunteers of N.O.T.S. (Night of the Streets) over-flow shelter have been working and meeting, via the computer, to serve their needs. The last few months have been an experience to say the least. But with prayer and determination we will get through this. We will be gathering again in our beautiful building that houses us, the Church. In the meantime - Stay Safe, stay strong in prayer, and be thankful we have a place to "shelter in place". May the Lord shine His face upon you, Deacon Craig
