Laying down our lives We all know about and have experienced what happens to a group trying to get a task done when the group is made up of “all chiefs and no Indians.” Usually there is chaos, with the task relegated to the back burner while the chiefs argue about how things should go. But the opposite -- all Indians and no chiefs -- would be just as disastrous. Without the leadership and guidance, en-couragement and support, insight and tenacity of some-one “in charge,” a task wouldn’t get finished in the best way, or perhaps not even finished at all. This Sunday’s gospel is comforting and reassuring. We have a chief: the Good Shepherd who leads us. We have a task: lay down our lives for others. In the Father’s love we too gather all people into one flock by laying down our lives for others. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. So are we to be. - Living Liturgy

Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, School Roof Repair Generously Donated: James Gardner, our School parent, wrote to me a letter a couple of months ago offering to repair the school roof. It came as a wonderful surprise and unexpected blessing. In the Facility Condi-tion Assessment Report given to us by the Arch-diocese in February 2010, it was pointed out that the school roof showed significant wear with water stagnating and some shingles loose. The roof was lacking proper draining as well. It was recommended that we reroof the older portion of the roof, ensuring tapered installation to di-rect water to drains. The work accomplished during the Easter school break included the roof over the library, school offices, and breezeway with installation of new gutters. All the materi-als and labor, valued at $67,710.00, was donated by Jim. On behalf of the whole parish and school community, I would like to thank Jim and his family for this kind and very generous gift. With this gift, a long deferred maintenance need has been addressed. Safety of our children, especial-ly during the rainy season, has been ensured. Blessings on you and your family, Jim! Minister Training: Our Faith Formation Coordi-nator Karen Guglielmoni led the liturgical min-ister training on March 24th. Twenty-one people attended Eucharistic Minister training, 22 people attended Lector training. They will be commis-sioned at the 12:30 Mass on Sunday, May 6, 2012 and will begin their ministry in May. These min-isters have the privilege of serving God and peo-ple through these ministries. They will share the Body of Christ and proclaim the Word of God. What great blessings these are! I congratulate them on their willingness and generosity. If there are others who would like to join these ranks, please would you let the office know.
New Altar Servers: Recently 27 children of our School and Faith Formation attended altar server training. They have already begun their ministry at weekday and weekend masses. When you see these new altar servers, especially from Grade 5, do say a good word of encouragement to them. May Crowning: All the children of our School and Faith Formation and all parishioners are invited to the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday May 6, 2012. At that Mass, the Angel Choir will sing. We shall also have the May Crowning at this Mass. All children pre-sent will be invited to participate in honoring our Blessed Mother during the Mass. To conclude our monthly grade-level masses for the school year, the children from our School and Faith Formation who recently received First Communion will also be special guests at the Mass. School First Communion: Twenty-nine of our St. Veronica School Children made their First Com-munion last Saturday, April 21, 2012. It is always a beautiful ceremony. When you see the children receive Communion for the first time in their life, with such innocence, wonder, and faith, we are all touched and inspired. Congratulations to the chil-dren, their families, and the school on this heart-warming ceremony. Easter Season: This holy season continues as we celebrate the presence of the Risen Christ in our lives, families, and the whole world. With Christ who has won such an earth-shaking victory, we can overcome all kinds of obstacles to love and fullness of life. We can experience the newness and energy. We can share our lives with family and others more generously. May the Risen Christ con-tinue to energize and inspire us. Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

All Maltese-American Communities, their families, friends and the general public are invited to attend this ceremony and encouraged to participate in this historic first pastoral visit of Archbishop Cermona to the San
Francisco Bay Area. Lunch will be made available after mass inside the Pa-trons Hall at the Cathedral. For more information and lunch reservations you may contact:

Congratulations and many blessings to the members of our Faith Formation family who recently attended minister training at St. Veronica Parish. Catechists Debra Cash and Cathy Burton-Meza took part in Lector training and will soon begin their ministry as proclaimers of the Word. Fifth graders Matthew Dayao, Shane Egan-Perez, Kavya Jacob, Ethan Mizzi and Jenna Sta. Maria completed altar server training and are already assisting our priests and deacons at Mass.

Acquire the Fire On April 13-15, 2012, the Saint Veronica Youth Minis-try/Core Group went on a Christian retreat in Sacramento called “Acquire The Fire”. Acquire the Fire is a gather-ing of Youth Ministries from all over the United States. While attending, you are surrounded by inspirational Christian music and speakers who are there to speak of God’s word based on their own personal experiences. During those two days, our perceptions of God, our faith, and ways of worship were changed dramatically. We not only grew closer to God, we grew as people of the church and built stronger relationships with our fellow ministry members. Going on this retreat was one of the best things we’ve done as a group. We believe - and we speak for everyone when we say this - that it changed us for the better and was an experience we will never for-get. Sara Theisen, President & Pamela Silva, Vice President St. Veronica Youth Ministry The St. Veronica Youth Ministry is for all parish youth from 8th grade on up. We do community service pro-jects and help in the parish when asked. It is a safe environment for youth of today to learn about a Christian Community and what it is like to be a Cath-olic Youth in today's world. We meet on Sunday eve-nings at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center of our campus.
