Master of Science in Family TherapyYou will learn…This nationally-respected Master of Science in Family Therapy degree provides the academic and clinical training you need to gain competence in the professional discipline of marriage and family therapy. This degree meets the educational requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist in Kansas and Missouri and most other states.

With this degree, you can…A master’s degree in marriage and family therapy allows you to work in a variety of settings. You may establish a private practice, work in psychiatric or medical hospital settings, serve church-based counseling centers, community mental health centers, military mental health services or residential treatment facilities. You will also be prepared to provide services including family preservation, foster care treatment, or adoption and reintegration. Additionally, the clinical experience you gain through your internship prepares you to provide counseling services immediately.

You will improve your skills by… This degree program is profession-focused, systemically informed, culturally sensitive and supportive of a transformative developmental trajectory inclusive of three integrative domains of marriage and family professional competency. Those domains are interpersonal competency referenced as the “self of the therapist,” theoretical competency referenced as a “life-long learner within the profession,” and clinical competency referenced as an effective practitioner continuously “meriting the public trust.” In addition to learning the theory behind therapy, you put that theory into practice through internships. Your internship will be supervised by experienced clinicians who are AAMFT-approved supervisors. Through recordings and direct observation of you in a clinical setting, your internship supervisor helps you develop and use the skills you’ll need to provide marriage and family therapy.

How many credit hours will it take to complete the degree?Youwillcomplete60credithoursthatincludea set sequence of required courses integrated withacontinuous16-monthsupervisedclinical internship. The full program schedule is designed to be completed within a minimum of 24 months.

Is the degree accredited?Yes. The degree is accredited by the CommissiononAccreditationforMarriageandFamilyTherapyEducation(COAMFTE)ofthe American Association for Marriage and FamilyTherapy(AAMFT).

Will I be required to take a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)?No.Neithertestisrequiredforentranceintograduate programs at Friends University. All graduate programs require a pre-admissions interview with the program director.
