together with the additional academic facilities, will further our aim of being the boarding school of choice in South Africa. The school also has a commitment to offering world class facilities and academic support to less fortunate members of the community. At heart College remains an Eastern Cape School, and in many ways this is what gives it its ethos; an ethos and value system that is unpretentious and straightforward. A number of bursaries and scholarships are currently offered to boys from historically disadvantaged communities in the Eastern Cape. The appointment of a Director of Mathematics and the establishment of a Maths Centre at the start of the year is already beginning to have an impact on the teaching and learning of Mathematics in Grahamstown and beyond. It is also promoting mathematical excellence in a country where these skills are so lacking. The 2005 Jubilee and the publishing of Dr Marguerite Poland’s book, ‘The Boy in You’, in 2008, have raised the profile of the school. It is absolutely critical that we don’t lose the momentum of the 2005 Jubilee. Many Old Andreans gave with extraordinary generosity but this campaign of giving is now coming to an end after five years. We need to sustain and build on this, and we cannot rely on a once off campaign, however rewarding it might have been. The Andrean Development Office will in future be known as The Andrean Foundation and will have as its major objective the development of a high level of commitment and sustained giving from the broader Andrean community. It is essentially the staff and boys that are the soul of the school, but we also cannot fall behind in the provision of world class facilities. The Science laboratories were

last refurbished through a grant from the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund in the late 1950s. It is imperative that we upgrade the Science laboratories. We are also looking at establishing an indoor sport and wellness centre. Teaching is currently not and historically has not been, a well rewarded profession and it is our intention to establish a fund, the proceeds of which will help College to retain and attract top quality academic staff. St Andrew’s is a great South African school, and great schools need great foundations. Education is probably the most critical issue facing our country and it is imperative for St Andrew’s to remain at the forefront of education in South Africa. We have a long and distinguished history and Andreans have committed themselves over the last 155 years to being “profitable members of Church and State”. It is essential then that those of us who have already benefitted from a St Andrew’s education give something back to the school to ensure that generations to come are able to enjoy the same privilege. The recent successful reunion weekend has highlighted for me the extraordinary goodwill which exists across generations of Old Andreans, parents past and present, teaching staff and pupils. We want to be able to nurture and direct this wealth of positive energy as we enter an ambitious but essential programme of development. Your support is crucial for the long term sustainability of College and I hope that you will want to be part of the further development of St Andrew’s over the coming years. Yours sincerely

Jubilee 150 update

Myles Ruck Paul McNaughton

Dear Jubilee 150 Donors and members of the

Andrean Community, This is our final update on the status of the Jubilee 150 fundraising campaign and, in addition, we are providing some info on what we plan going forward from a fundraising point of view. We’re very pleased to report that as at 31 August, we had received R43 million of the total amount pledged of R45,6 million. This represents a collection rate of 94% of the total amounts pledged - and still the outstanding balance continues to reduce. This is a remarkable story and our thanks go to all those who consistently pay their pledges as they fall due. At the bottom of this newsletter we have included, in alphabetical order, the names of all those who have contributed to the success of the Jubilee 150. If your name is not there and your contributions (of any size) are up to date, please let us know so we

can add your name to the list - and apologies in advance for excluding it in the first place!! While the list is certainly impressive, it’s worth noting that it represents approximately8 - 9 % of the Old Boy population that might have made a donation. Put differently, if we could have upped the percentage of donors to 20% from the 8 - 9% for a like amount, we would have received close to R100,0 million!! We have highlighted in previous newsletters what we have done with the

proceeds of the fund raising, but it’s worth repeating some of it here.Of the R43 million received to date, R26,0 million has been used to provide scho la r sh ips /bursa r i es (grants) of various sizes. Of that R26,0 million, approximately 48% comes from offshore and the balance is invested with local asset managers to provide sustainable income for grants on an annual basis. It may be of interest to readers to know that we now have approximately R950 000 per grade available for grants on an annual basis. That number will be slightly higher thanks to the very generous actions of certain parents whose sons have won scholarships and who have donated the money from those scholarships to be made available for grants for other boys. These are remarkably generous gestures!! As you will be aware, we engaged in a program of renovating the boarding

houses with much of the balance of the funds raised - inevitably this cost far more than was originally envisaged. Over the K-Day weekend, the “new” Graham House was opened - and it looks fantastic. The boys are over the moon with their new facilities - a far cry from the dormitories of earlier times!!! We have now completed renovations of four of the six boarding houses and will be embarking on Mullins next and then, finally, Merriman. All the new boy facilities

have now been renovated. U n f o r t u n a t e l y t h e s e renovations have come at a cost as the boarding houses were in a poor state of repair and their upgrade was years overdue. The primary reason for this was the continued avoidance of major ongoing maintenance spend in an effort to keep fees as low as possible. Whilst this objective was achieved it was inevitable that we would have to play catch up. The net result of all this is that we have had to borrow a fairly sizeable amount of money to pay for the upgrades - and as stated there is more to come. It is clear that we cannot allow this type of scenario to unfold in future. It is also equally clear that we cannot fund capital maintenance out of fee income - that is used for the day to day operations of the school. For that reason we introduced the new entrance fee structure last year. A portion of the entrance fee is non-refundable and the balance is refunded on the boy’s departure from College.

None of the money received from those deposits is being spent - but rather we are investing the money and will use the future proceeds on that investment to embark on regular major maintenance of the boarding houses. In this way it is hoped we will avoid being faced with large once off capital expenditure as is currently the case. Where there were specific requests by donors as to where their donation should be spent we have done so as far as possible. As a result, inter alia, we will be buying a new boat for the rowing club, we were able to put the floodlights up for the Astroturf, we had a significant contribution to the upgrade of the Highlander and we made a meaningful contribution to the Good Shepherd School. In certain instances we have been unable to spend the money on specifically requested projects - for example some money was donated towards a bridge over Somerset Street - that project has been superseded by a traffic calming circle project being undertaken at

The Traffic Circle under construction

All in all, I think it’s safe to say the monies donated under the Jubilee 150 banner have been both invested and spent wisely. It’s hard to think how we would have coped without that burst of generosity. What the Jubilee 150 did

teach us is that there is a serious need for College to introduce a more permanent fundraising capacity within the school to ensure that College is sustainable over the medium to long term - and that it remains world class in terms of what it has to offer

academically, culturally and recreationally. As you will have read in the Headmaster’s letter, there is no shortage of projects which will significantly

upgrade the school’s overall offering. For a start, we have to finance the upgrade of 2 further boarding houses. In addition we have embarked on a decades-long overdue upgrade of “Crossways” -

Crossways upgrade

The Council has agreed to shift the emphasis of the Andrean Development Office from a “one-off” fundraising entity to an office that will seek to undertake the raising of funds for the

school on a more permanent basis. It will be renamed the Andrean Foundation and the intention is for it to become self funding over a relatively short period of time. It will focus on all aspects of fundraising for

the school - programmes aimed at all the different sectors of the Andrean Community and beyond. For example we have an arrangement with a large corporate to match us rand for rand in the operation of

the Maths centre, and with another corporate to match us rand for rand in the provision of bursaries for people who otherwise couldn’t dream of a private school education. We will also, by way of further example, b e i n t r o d u c i n g a formal bequest programme - on this page and page 7 in this newsletter you will read of a number of benefactors of the school who have recently left us bequests.

The single largest bequest to College was made last year by an Old Boy - G.B Clapman. He left us with a sizeable share portfolio (worth less now than this time last year

- but which will grow again, hopefully) and a significant cash bequest. In all the total of this bequest is some R30,0 million. In addition, we have been extremely fortunate to gain a commitment from 7 Old Boys to donate in excess of R25,0 million to the school over the next 5 years. It is off this base of R55,0 million that we wish to launch the Andrean Foundation with an immediate target of increasing this base amount to R100,0 million. This will form a starting point for the ongoing permanent fundraising efforts of the Andrean Foundation - which is being set up by Bev McCarthy in the position of Acting Director of Development. We know that we may appear ambitious in our initial target but believe that we are being realistic in the light of the incredible generosity already evidenced by a few committed Old Boys. The intention is for

The Boy in You becomes a best seller1,700 copies of the Standard Edition and 100 copies of a special Collectors’ Edition are now SOLD OUT!We should have known that the story of the history of College written by the inimitable Marguerite Poland who has woven the tapestry of the School’s story into the fascinating history of the Eastern Cape, South Africa and the two World Wars, would be a best seller.Led by Ken Maxwell and his committee, the sales of The Boy in You took off amid book launches all over the country and in the UK in the latter months of 2008. Marguerite Poland’s road trip to promote the book resulted in a massive influx of orders from far and wide. The Collectors’ Edition, a beautifully crafted half-leather blue goatskin, autographed, uniquely numbered book, bearing the purchaser’s name and limited to 100 copies was soon becoming a sought after item. All copies were sold by August this year and a Collectors List can be found on the OA website at www.oldandrean.com

that capacity that he has been to St Andrew’s twice for the President’s Awards. The handover was made possible through Old Andrean Sir Miles Hunt-Davis

the Foundation to launch its ongoing permanent fundraising drive from the beginning of next year off the back of the above commitments, and to deliver on certain of the projects outlined by the Headmaster in his letter - we feel that people will more readily donate to specific projects which resonate with them. I am sure we will be able to count on the ongoing support of the greater Andrean Community.

Old Andreans leave a legacy

St Andrew’s College and Preparatory have recently received the following bequests:

Charles Bernard Blaker was in Espin from 1927 to 1931. He was a prefect at College and went on to become an Accountant in Johannesburg. He passed away on 15th October 1976. R45,121 was allocated to the St Andrew’s bursary fund in his Will. His son, David Neville Blaker taught biology at College for several years in the 1970s but was educated at Grey High School in PE. He and his family emigrated to New Zealand around 1979/1980. His younger son, John Richard Blaker, known as Jack, is an OA and father to Henry John Morgan, currently in Grade 12 in Espin.Reverend Hugh Alfred Harker was a Chaplain at College from 1947 to 1962. He was made an Honorary Old Andrean in 1969. Known as Horse Harker to many, he passed away in December 1990. After the recent passing of his wife, Ruth, the Hugh Harker Memorial Trust paid a sum of R68,179 over to College.Donald Cameron Kiddie was in Upper from 1947 to 1951 (Post Matric). He was also a prefect. His father, AC Kiddie was a generous donor towards the levelling and building up of the Crawhall field. Don Kiddie passed away on 27 May 2008 and left a generous bequest of R250,000 to St Andrew’s College and R150,000 to St Andrew’s Prep. This bequest was made with no conditions or stipulations attached. This couldn’t have arrived at a more appropriate time for St Andrew’s Prep. The R150,000 became the first donation towards the Prep 125th fundraising campaign as Prep celebrates this milestone in 2010. More about Prep’s 125th can be found on pages 10 & 11.

Blackburn Scholarships

Harry William Blackburn (OA) left College in

1900. He died in April 1970. The bequest to College was made in terms of his will dated 30 January 1970. In September 1971 the amount invested with BOE was circa R581, 000. As at May 31 2009 the market value of the portfolio stood at R24, 555, 298. The Blackburn Scholarships were first awarded in 1973. In terms of the bequest they were awarded under the following conditions:

Old Andreans leave a legacy

Granville Beverley Clapham was in Espin from 1922 to 1925 (Post Matric). He passed away on 30th December 2001. As mentioned on page 5, this largest single bequest will make a significant difference to College.

Leaving a legacy - The Andrean Foundation Bequest programmeThrough various bequest appeals in the past, St Andrew’s

College is honoured to have received bequest pledges and contributions from Old Andreans. The major purpose of a bequest programme is to provide more structure and coordination for Old Andreans who intend to leave a bequest to College or Prep in their Will. We aim to build a capital fund with bequest income which will be utilised at the discretion of the St Andrew’s College Council. Bursaries and scholarships, capital projects, upgrading of infrastructure are the main areas requiring regular financial support. If desired, however, bequestors may select a specific project or allocation. The bequests have long been deemed the type of donation given by individuals senior in age! This is not true in that individuals of any age, with a Will, are able to leave a bequest. Depending on the level of commitment, naming rights may be requested. A bursary or scholarship in your memory, or a capital project, ensures that your legacy lives on. To make a bequest to College or Prep is to pledge a wonderful gift to the future. It is recognition that College and Prep need a steady source of capital investment if they are to continue to thrive as leading South African schools. Should you wish to consider joining the bequest programme, contact Mrs Bev McCarthy on +27 (0)46

603 2362 or email [email protected] to obtain a Codicil for your Will.

They were made to boys whose general potential contribution is considered to be of a very high standard. Such contribution may be as a scholar, or as a scholar and games player, or as a games player whose academic efforts are substantial. In making the awards, the Scholarship committee of the Council will consider favourably, those candidates whose general character and achievements

Duthie Memorial Scholarships

The farm” Belvidere” in the Knysna district including the original homestead and the Belvidere Church

were originally owned by George Rex. The property was then purchased from the Rex family by the Duthie family. Subsequent to the death of Dr Augusta Duthie, the homestead was declared a National Monument. It is thought that Dr Augusta Duthie was probably the sister of Rev. Albert George Duthie who left College at the end of 1906. During his time at College he was a prefect and the longest serving Captain of the first XV Rugby team ever. He studied at St Paul’s Theological College, was a Chaplain during the Great War and won a MC. He lived at Belvidere, Knysna and was Rector of Belvidere from 1920. He died in September 1932 while preaching. BEQUEST: - Dr Augusta Duthie’s will was dated 6 September 1962. She died on 8 August 1963. The bequest stipulated that the net proceeds of the sale of the Estate known as “Belvidere” were to be invested with the Board

St Andrew’s College Foundation Trust

The inaugural meeting of the SAC Foundation Trust was held in June 2001. It was formed to consolidate

those funds outside of the above two bequests and the total of the first distribution of bursaries in 2002 amounted to R528,000. The initial amount invested was just under R12 million and at February 2009 the capital employed was R21, 465,695. The income distribution to College for bursaries in 2009 amounted to R1.2 million. These bursaries are awarded to people who require financial assistance whilst the Blackburn and Duthie Scholarships are awarded according to the mandate and on merit. The Trustees of this fund, although Old Andreans, are independent of the College and also maintain a watching brief over the Blackburn and Duthie Investments.

of Executors (BOE), in a Trust Fund to be known as the Duthie Memorial Scholarships. The income from this fund was to be divided equally between St Andrew’s College and St Paul’s Theological College (now known as The College of the Transfiguration) for the purpose of funding Scholarships to be known as the “Duthie Memorial Scholarship”. The award was to be made to pupils of merit and good character with terms and conditions to be left to the administrators of the fund. The property was eventually sold in 1985 for R1.215 million and the amount invested by BOE. As at 31 May 2009 the market value of the shared portfolio was R17, 684, 190. The distribution from this investment for scholarships in 2009 is R400, 000.

St Andrew’s Prep125th Anniversary in 2010Celebrating our Past, Creating our Future

Next year St Andrew’s Prep, having opened its doors in 1885, will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary.

Various events, functions and fundraising projects are being planned to commemorate this milestone and it is with great pleasure that I advise you of some of these activities. It is our hope that you may be able to join with us in some way in celebrating this special occasion. In keeping with our theme namely: “Celebrating our Past, Creating our Future”, the following activities are being planned in order to connect with our community and with fellow schools:• A Birthday Parade on Friday 29th January 2010 for the current Preppie boys and girls. This will involve a parade through the town centre on the 29th January. The purpose being not only to celebrate our official birthday, but also to raise awareness within the broader Grahamstown community.• A “Sports for All” Conference from 12th to 14th March 2010 for Independent Schools around the country. This will naturally be a very topical subject in our country’s history with South Africa due to host the Soccer World Cup in June. This will enable us to contribute towards improving the status quo with regards to sport in schools in our land.• An Old Prep Supper/Reunion from 24th to 26th September 2010 for Old Boys and Girls. This event is being planned along the lines of our traditional Leaver’s Supper complete with Monkey Races – yes, we still do them! This will be an opportunity to get together with friends, reminisce and celebrate with us.

St Andrew’s Prep 125th Anniversary in 2010w From page 10

Generations of families from the Eastern Cape and afar have maintained the tradition of sending their children to Prep for 125 years. Celebrating this milestone in 2010 presents an opportunity for Old Preppies to give something back to their old school. Firstly, by giving back you will connect to all those values and experiences of your youth. Prep is about family and a sense of belonging. Your contribution will re-affirm this and celebrate your part in Prep’s history. The second reason for investing in Prep is that we are setting an exciting course for the future. We are creating our future by developing tomorrow’s leaders – for each individual boy and girl to take on personal opportunities, challenges and faith – for each staff member to grow and develop professionally – for Prep to develop its plant. With your help, Prep will become the boarding school of choice in Africa and the St Andrew’s brand will continue to mean excellence in education. The Prep community have identified the need for a Multimedia Centre and the 125th anniversary is an ideal opportunity to raise funds for the type of facility that will enable every child in the school to benefit. A position for the Centre has been identified on the Top Prep campus and will be utilised by boys and girls from Grades 1 to 7. The

Centre will include a computer lab, interactive white boards, projector screen and possibly the art and music departments if we are able to extend the Centre to include these. It is estimated that we would need to raise R1,25 million in order to realise the first phase of this project.Donations towards the Prep 125th fundraising campaign can be paid over a 5 year period. Options such as annual payments or affordable monthly contributions are available. (A generous donation of R10,000 costs as little as R167 per month over 5 years!) Donor families of R10,000 or more will have their names on a special Prep 125th Donor Board at the school. Donations are tax deductible (maximum of 10% of annual taxable income) which is an added benefit. The following categories are available to Prep 125th donors:Senior 8 R50,000 + Proud Preppie R5,000Top Class R30,000 True Blue R 1,000Under 13A R10,000 Bequests Any amount In order to make this a special year for all those who have been associated with Prep over the years we hope to connect with as many Old Boys and Girls as possible.Kind regards
