Sharon’s Snippets Wow!! What a summer it has been in DKG. First, 6 Gamma Eta sisters, Donna Anderson, K-Dee Anderson, Jean Williams, Debbi Ball, Janie Wigley and Sharon McDougle, went to the State Convention in Frisco. What a great and wonderful convention it was. I sure wish all of you could have gone. We went to a baseball game for the Frisco RoughRiders and the fireworks after the game were spectacular from the 14th floor of the hotel. There were a lot of breakout sessions to choose from, the Memorial Service was nice, and we also saw the chartering of a new chapter. What an experience that was. Then came the Birthday Luncheon and boy was that one to remember for me. As they were giving out the Golden Rose Awards, I couldn't believe it, I thought I was dreaming. I heard my name called out in front of 1,000 DKG sister for this award. Yes, I did win the award I have the golden rose pin and the certificate to prove it. Thank you Gamma Eta sisters for submitting my name. Then after being home a week Janie and I were back on the road again to the DKG International Convention in Nashville, 1868 miles round trip. It was a new experience as well. At the convention all the states and the 17 countries were all represented by at least one DKG member. We heard wonderful speakers and there were lots of breakout sessions. It was great meeting ladies from other states and countries who were sitting by you at breakout sessions or the birthday luncheon. I can't wait for the International Texas in 2018, so all of you can attend that convention. The planning meeting at Rhea's went well. We had 11 Gamma Eta sisters planning wonderful programs for our upcoming year. You wont want to miss any of them. Hope everyone enjoyed their summer and are off to a great start with back to school activities. Wishing all of you a wonderful and great school year. Don't forget our first meeting for the year is our Area Workshop in September. Hope to see all of you there September 10, 2016 at LakeRidge United Methodist Church in Lubbock at 8:45 am. Minutes of April 25, 2016 Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met April 25, 2016 at Letta Hall in the First United Methodist Church in Crosbyton, Texas. Seventeen members and two guests enjoyed a wonderful meal prepared by Patsy Weems, Debra Raatz, and Vickie Sellers after a prayer led by Sharon McDougle. Janie Wigley, President, opened the meeting. She introduced our guests Shalan Inmon, TSO State Recording Secretary, and Judy Evans. Janie gave a brief history of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International's founders and the organization. Members shared bits of history about the original 12 members. Sharon McDougle and Vivian Morris also shared information about the organization. Patsy Weems presented Terri Koch to President Janie Wigley, Vivian Morris, Sharon McDougle, and Donna Anderson for initiation into Gamma Eta.

Janie Wigley invited our guest, Shalan Inmon, to install the new officers for 2016-2018. President, Sharon McDougle; 1st Vice President, Rhea Melton; 2nd Vice President, Debbi Ball; Recording Secretary, Lindy Stafford; Corresponding Secretary, Stephanie Martinez; Treasurer, K Dee Anderson; Parliamentarian, Linda Spurgin; Newsletter Editor, Janie Wigley; and Past President, Janie Wigley were installed.

Donna Anderson presented red roses to members who had worn their pin every meeting they attended. Those members were: Jean Williams, Janie Wigley, Vickie Sellers, Rhea Melton, and Vivian Morris. Donna Anderson also presented red roses to members who had perfect attendance this past year. Those receiving roses were: Vivian Morris, Pat Hightower, and Janie Wigley.

Brenda Karr and Cristy McClenny had a special presentation for Janie for four years of consecutive service as President of Gamma Eta. They presented her with a piece of Chapter Jewelry, the Past President's Pin. They noted that she had been the first President to serve consecutive terms. Brenda Karr then made two announcements. She invited everyone to a Retirement Reception for Larry and Cristy McClenny honoring 49 years of combined service to the Patton Springs ISD. The reception will be held on May 20 from 12:00 to 2:00 at the Patton Springs School. The second announcement was to report that Debbi Ball would be retiring from Spur ISD WITH 35 years of service.

Janie announced that our "What'll I Do" project had raised $665.00 which will purchase books to place in the libraries of the elementary schools our chapter covers. Janie, then speaking as the Area 11 Coordinator, shared information about the Area 12 workshop. She urged us to visit the tables set up to register for the workshop and pay Sharon the $7.00 fee. Also, Janie had a project that needed a few volunteers, and there was a sign-up sheet for bringing refreshments to the workshop. Janie stated that Judy Evans, Sharon McDougle, Debbi Ball, and K Dee Anderson would be presenters at the Area Workshop. K Dee, our Webwatcher, reminded members to sign up for the convention. Janie reminded members to view the table set up for the TSO Convention project. She, Sharon, Donna, K Dee, Debbi, and Jean have already signed up to attend. Sharon McDougle then presented the Gamma Eta Award to Rhea Melton, the Gamma Eta newsletter editor for 4 years of service. The meeting closed with a special surprise when Debbi Ball played the piano as we sang the Delta Kappa Gamma song.

Schools for Africa by Janie Wigley (Seal of Merit—The Society) The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is making a dif-ference in many different ways. One of these ways is the Schools for Africa Program. The Schools for Africa is a multi-country educational initiative that partners UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Hamburg Society, and DKG to increase the access to quality education for children in 13 African countries. The funds raised to support this project is helping to give African children a brighter future. With the support of funds from this partnership 5 million children have benefited. There has been an in-creased access to basic quality education in 11 of Africa’s most needy countries. One thousand schools have been built or remodeled. Nearly one hundred thousand teachers have been trained. School supplies as well as desks and chairs have been made available. Clean, safe drinking water and separate bathrooms for girls and boys have been a major focus. Most importantly, Schools for Africa create schools that offer a protective en-vironment. Progress is being made in Africa; however, there are many African children that are unable to attend school. With support from members of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, UNICEF can provide quality education to the most disadvantaged children in Africa. To donate to Schools for Africa, please visit unicefusa.org/dkg.

Stash the Cash ASTEF Fund Raiser

July 1, 2016-May 1, 2017

What: Stash the Cash in My Area 12 Cash Clutch Why: To raise funds for Projects—Including Aspiring Educator Awards Who: Janie Wigley, Area Coordinator How: Everywhere I go I will take a “Red Clutch” with me to collect cash for ASTEF. I will have my clutch at the Area 12 Workshop and chapter visits. I will be happy to take coins (like we put in the piggy banks); however, I really will prefer folded money!!! After all, we need to support ASTEF and folded money is easier to count!!! Watch for me and my clutch!!!
