GASBOOK, a guide to creativity around the world, was born in 1996 as a medium for bringing new art and design ideas together from all corners of the globe, in many cases producing the first monographs for artists such as Mike Mills and Geoff Mcfetridge in a series of books that continues today. Initially rejecting traditional publishing formats, GASBOOK pioneered the use of T-shirts, DVDs and CD-ROMs as a medium for showcasing the best new creations from Japan and abroad, compiled in original packaging for each release. Calm & Punk Gallery is an alternative space by GAS as I/F with an aim to present new kinds of artists and emerging talents, while also serving as a meeting point for creative people. SEIKO SPECTRUM WAS THE FIRST WATCH TO INCORPORATE THE MICROCAPSULE ELECTRONIC INK TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORLD.
Seiko Spectrum was the first watch to incorporate the microcapsule e-ink (electronic ink) technology in the world. Gas as Interface was behind the creation of the display face, which was designed in collaboration with graphic designer Tota Hasegawa (TOMATO). By co-ordinating the interface between technology and creativity we were able to produce a blend of futuristic design and function. Seiko Spectrum was produced in a limited edition of 500 units. GAS AS I/F OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES FOR GOLDWIN, THE OWNER OF THE PATENT FOR NORTH FACE JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA
IN AN EFFORT TO DEEPEN CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE NATURAL WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY, WE COMMISSIONED ARTISTS TO INSTALL AN EXHIBITION AND DISPLAYED LIMITED EDITION PRODUCTS FEATURING PRINTS OF THEIR WORK. THIS COLLABORATION WITH THE NORTH FACE AND NANAMICA WAS ENTITLED “ROOTS OF LIFE” AND RAN OVER 7 YEARS.
In February 2005, The North Face opened “Unlimited”, a high-end concept store in Tokyo’s Omote Sando Hills. Pursuing the high-level functionality that the outdoor brand is known for, they feature simple, standard lines of merchandise without any unnecessary design frills, using quality materials and flawless tailoring. GAS as Interface also collaborated with international creative agencies that complemented the brand image; Work in Progress, known for its subtle but functional designs, created the logo and Saturday worked on special packaging and communication materials. GAS as I/F also produces the art event, The North Face Earth Kids Project - 7 Nature Usagi and has provided original textile graphics by HINY, Ahonen & Lamberg and many others.

For over ten years GAS as I/F has provided creative planning for Uniqlo. The services range from artist co-ordination and cultural/art contextual direction for collections as well as series planning, licensing and project management. These collections have included; textile prints by Eley Kishimoto and Marcus James, licensing from the Director’s Bureau, David Lynch and record labels such as Domino and ECM along with collaborations with photographers and up-and-coming and established artists such as Peter Sutherland, Geoff Mcfetridge and Eric Elmes.

Mitsukoshi and Isetan are the two largest department stores in Japan, both with rich histories - Mitsukoshi over 300 years and Isetan 129 years. In 2007 the two merged, further strengthening their presence at the forefront of the Japanese retail scene.

PLANNING AND PRODUCTION OF AN INTERACTIVE MOBILE PHONE CAMPAIGN FOR A LEADING JAPANESE TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANY
YOU-ME-WHO? Is an installation with displays using the scanned images of visitors’ faces, enabling the visitors to be part of the exhibition instantly. The party featured DJ’s Kitsune, Trevor Jackson and a VJ set by Tomato.
KDDI DESIGNING STUDIO MOBILE MESSAGE PROJECT thumb TALKIN’ As mobile text messaging centres around the love between friends and family, collected messages of love from celebrities were made into wristbands and other merchandise. The public could also send in their own messages of love which were used to create the installation by Tomato using the large display thumb TALKIN’ HOO.
THUMB TALKIN’ WAS AN EDGY COLLABORATION BETWEEN TWO OF THE WORLD’S LEADING ARTISTS, TOMATO AND DJ KENTARO. THE PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE FUN-FILLED, CREATIVE COMMUNICATIONS USING CELL PHONES WITH A GIANT MONITOR TO DISPLAY THE MESSAGES INSIDE THE EVENT SPACE.
The Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI opened its corporate communications facility KDDI Designing Studio in Harajuku in 2005. To promote the opening, GAS as I/F produced the interactive installation YOU-ME-WHO? and the thumb TALKIN’ campaign, both working with the renowned creative group, Tomato.

ADDING FUN ONTO EVERYDAY LIFE, GIVING CUSTOMERS OVER 100 CREDIT CARD DESIGN OPTIONS
EVERYDAY LIFE SHOULD BE CREATIVE. EVEN LITTLE THINGS LIKE A SIMPLE CREDIT CARD.
GAS as I/F won the pitch to update the existing design concept of EPOS CARD’s 100 designs. By collaborating with well known global and domestic artists and designers we created eleven sub categories to give the consumer more structure in what appears at first glance to be an unlimited range of design choices. Together with the overall concept we worked with EPOS to create the website, advertising and logo design as well as coordinating all of the artists and design selections.

BY COMMISSIONING ARTISTS TO CREATE NEW WORK INSPIRED BY TEZUKA OSAMU’S CREATIVE LEGACY, HIS MESSAGE AND ETHOS CAN BE PASSED ON TO THE NEXT GENERATION.
Tezuka Osamu By GASBOOK is a project by Gas as I/F and Tezuka Pro using work created by international artists, inspired by the work of the late Tezuka Osamu. Launched to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Tezuka’s birth, the project aims to pass on his work and messages to the next generation. Participating artists include Enlightenment, Tomato, Nagi Noda, Toshifumi Tanabu, Tomoki Kurokawa and Risa Fukui. The range of products have included UT T-shirts for Uniqlo, bags with Yoshida and collaborations with a selection of large retail stores. We also produced a book together with an exhibition at PARCO Shibuya.

TEZUKA OSAMU BY GASBOOK
GLOBAL PAC-MAN COLLABORATION TO COINCIDE WITH THE 61ST ANNIVERSARY OF FRED PERRY
HERITAGE PATTERNS, GINGHAMS AND CHECKS ARE REWORKED TO LOOK LIKE MAZES TRANSPORTED FROM THE CLASSIC VIDEO GAME.
GAS as I/F tends to look at established ideas from a completely new perspective. Fred Perry SS 2013 introduces the unique view of the Japanese pixel designer ten_do_ten to the Namco Bandai arcade hero PAC-MAN, using the timeless Fred Perry polo shirt as a canvas. This collection consisted of five different colorful interpretations of the concept with the iconic PAC-MAN character eating his way around the Laurel Wreath logo. The collection kept the original arcade game colours, black base, primary red, yellow and white - it was an instant hit, selling out worldwide.

Yum Yum Art is a special seasonal collection by Goncharoff, a Kobe based chocolatier with over 90 years of history, exclusive to Isetan/Mitsukoshi. Gas as I/F regularly commission international artists to design the packaging for the chocolatier, with new sets of designs produced annually for occasions such as Valentine’s Day and as part of the summer and winter gift seasons in Japan.
Past artists have included Emily Forgot, Carolin Löbbert, Esther Kim, Mio Matsumoto and Chie Shiraishi.

Sound x Vision stimulated our senses and perceptions by presenting the works of international artists together for the first time. Each work was produced by one sound and one visual artist, resulting in a space where art and society met through technology and creation. The three month experience was hosted by contemporary design spaces across Japan such as Sendai Mediatheque, YCAM, graf media gm and Laforet Museum.

Katsuya Kamo is a maverick hair and makeup designer celebrated by Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garçons, Chanel and Undercover to name a few of his collaborators. Katsuya Kamo’s 100 Headpieces exhibited a wide range of the artist’s work or the first time, also recreating Kamo’s atelier, displaying his personal work and cabinets of curiosities along with his own selection of Polaroid sketchbooks and footage from the catwalk.
The exhibition was accompanied by a special edition of GASBOOK - GASBOOK 29 KATSUYA KAMO: 100 HEADPIECES.

TRAVELING GAS SHOP
PRODUCING CREATIVE WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AS PART OF THE SUMMER HOLIDAY EVENTS AT ISETAN SHINJUKU
WORKING WITH CHILDREN HAS BEEN ONE OF GAS AS I/F’S MAIN FOCUSES FOR MANY YEARS. WE BELIEVE THAT CREATIVITY WILL ENRICH A CHILD’S LIFE, MAKING IT MORE FUN.
Gas as I/F organised a series of summer holiday workshops for children at Isetan Shinjuku. In 2010, HUG THE WORLD featured eco-themed workshops that included Yoga, toy windmill and snowdome making, along with drawing, fashion and graphic design.2012’s Oshigoto Wonderland and 2013’s Oshigoto Museum included workshops around the theme of work experience, where children could try jobs such as a florist, bag designer, jeweller, hairdresser, pharmacist and more.

Fika is a concept confectionery shop by Metro Seika, exclusive to the Isetan Shinjuku store. The idea behind the shop is to combine traditional Nordic sweets with design. The brand name – Fika is used for coffee break throughout Scandinavia, GAS as I/F created all of the branding including naming, logo design, bags, as well as selecting and collaborating with artists to produce each design package.

REBRANDING OF AN ESTABLISHED JAPANESE COMPANY FOR IMPROVED COMMUNICATION AND RECOGNITION IN OVERSEAS MARKETS
AFTER 60 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP IN THE JAPANESE SPORTS APPAREL MARKET, GOLWDWIN NEEDED TO REBUILD THEIR BAND IDENTITY. GAS AS I/F SUPPORTED THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF BRAND RENEWAL AND COMMUNICATION.
Goldwin has a rich history of more than 60 years as a leading brand in Japanese sports apparel. GAS as I/F provided full branding for the company, including the updating and refining of their original logo, tagline, web, annual reports and brand book.
Goldwin owns the patents of North Face and the licence of ellesse and Helly Hansen in Japan.Date /

CREATING A TEMPORARY RETAIL SPACE FOR THE ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION BY SANYO X OOMARU SEISAKUSHO 2 AT RE-STYLE, ISETAN
OOMARU SEISAKUSHO 2’S INTRICATE PATTERN WORK, WHICH IS HIGHLY VALUED BY NEW YORK’S HIGH-END FASHION BRANDS, WAS BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED IN THIS ICONIC TOKYO BOUTIQUE.
As part of Timeless Work, Sanyo’s 70th anniversary campaign, Creatures of the Wind created a capsule collection inspired by Sanyo’s archive from the 1960s. For a week-long pop-up feature of the collection at ReStyle, Shinjuku Isetan Department Store, GAS as I/F commissioned oomaru seisakusho 2 (who also create patterns and samples for Creatures of the Wind) to design the shop space, utilising patterns from the collection. Enlarged creations were made using Gabardine, an iconic fabric from Sanyo’s heritage in coats, to surround the shop space.

AUTUMN CAMPAIGN DESIGN AND PLANNING FOR MITSUKOSHI DEPARTMENT STORES IN GINZA AND NIHONBASHI
We develop a number of frameworks in which artists and designers can find new venues of expression or further opportunities to take creative flight. For the autumn campaign of Mitsukoshi Ginza, we created visual merchandising featuring graphics by Japanese artist Minna. We also organized workshops in the Ginza and Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi stores. The feedback from these events was extremely positive as they successfully spanned three generations of participants, from grandmothers to mothers and their children.

IRODORI SAI ANNUAL CAMPAIGN
COMMISSIONING ARTISTS TO CREATE ORIGINAL WORK FOR A CHARITY EVENT AT ISETAN
THE CREATIVITY OF PARTICIPATING ARTISTS SUCCESSFULLY RAISED AWARENESS OF THESE ENDANGERED SPECIES, WHILE ALSO RAISING ¥700,000 AT A CHARITY AUCTION.
As part of Isetan’s charity campaign, Kiss the Earth, we commissioned 13 artists to create original work using recycled materials.The artworks were displayed and on sale in the store for a limited period of time, with all proceeds going to WWF Japan for their programmes to save the forests of the Amur Leopard in the Russian Far East, together with other Asian forests.

BRANDING AND PLANNING OF ISETAN AND MITSUKOSHI’S FIRST EVER JOINT PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN AFTER THEIR MERGER
THIS WAS THE FIRST JOINT CAMPAIGN THAT ISETAN AND MITSUKOSHI CREATED, 4 YEARS INTO THEIR MERGER. THE STRONG CREATIVE FEATURED ELEPHANTS, HISTORICALLY USED BY ISETAN AS AN ICON OF FAMILY AND MOTHERHOOD.
To celebrate the merger between Isetan and Mitsukoshi we co-ordinated a campaign communication plan featuring posters and workshops with German artist Carolin Löbbert.
The promotion also included small scale displays under the concept of memorable family portraits for Mother’s Day.Date /
