FROM LIFE PROJECT TO INDUSTRIAL PROJECT

This profile celebrates 30 years of Engineering Ingegneria Informatica andthe companies of the Group. The first Cerved-Engineering centre opened on 6 June, 1980, in Padua, based on an idea and project created by our president. At that time, it was a life project. Today, Engineering is a large-scale industrialproject for the market and more than 6,000 employees. This annual report, released on the occasion of the Group’s thirtieth anni-versary, tells the story of an Italian company through a selection of archivematerials, both pictorially and in narrative. We have collected and organised a quantity of varied visual information withinthe report, which has marked the stages of the company’s communicationwith the market over the past three decades.

It is also the part of a true company archive. The archive, which is still to be created but has already been planned, will be preserved in paperand multimedia formats at the ICT Training School ‘Enrico della Valle’ in Ferentino, near Rome. This school is the training venue for colleagues and customers who increasingly turn to theGroup’s methodological, managerial and technical skills for the enhancement of their own expertise. So, that’s about it. We invite all the readers of this document to appreciate the effort which wasneeded to reorganise, liberate and illuminate, with visual impact, what otherwise might haveremained a pile of dusty, ‘silent’ papers. Pulled from the various drawers in which they’veresided for three decades, these papers tell the story of a journey and an evolutionary processfrom small to large, from national to international, and from company to Group. We have also attached a key for the more curious amongst you, explaining how each picturecorrelates to its original material. The key terms used, such as state-of-the-art, growth, andbelonging, to name just a few, are the doorways to the various sections of the corporate profile.Such terms are the standard bearers of this business history. Together, the words and picturesconvey the values we have maintained over the past 30 years, and those values are as significanttoday as they were yesterday.

Costanza AmodeoMarketing & Communication Director

The graphic materials used in this profile are in Italian, and therefore we realise they might not be perfectlyunderstood by our overseas readers. However, the decision not to translate them was specifically an editorial onebased on the concept of protecting the purity of documents originally created in Italian, as the history of Engineeringto date has mainly been Italian.

A GLOBAL PARTNER

The introduction to last year's Group profile carried the title, ‘Handling the Crisis WhileThinking of the Future’.The interpretation that Engineering gave to this principle lies in the sum of 27 million euroswhich has been invested in new technological experiments and product developments. It has been a brave choice - particularly given the market’s prohibitive conditions - whichthe Group’s extraordinary solidity has made possible. The success of this choice can be seen in our financial statement figures (an 11% increasein market share) and in the various achievements which have consolidated Engineering’sposition as a reference company for national ICT.Engineering’s offer of consultancy services and system integration has been expandedthrough the addition of services associated with IT infrastructure management. In thisregard, we have concentrated some of our most important research projects on subjectssuch as Green IT and Cloud Computing. Our proposal on outsourcing services has been achieved, thanks in part to our uniqueinfrastructure in the marketplace, in regards to quality, reliability and security (currentlybeing upgraded from tier 3 to tier 4), on which the first tangible ‘infrastructure as a service’offer was designed. The companies that grow successfully during times of crisis are the ones which know howto adapt their offers to the changes in demand. This is ever-more true in the high-technologycontext and in periods of economic uncertainty. In a year which is projected to be even more difficult than the last, Engineering is a referencepoint for companies that have found it necessary to rationalise IT costs without giving uptechnological development. Thus, Engineering is a global partner:• based on the quality and size of its offer• based on its international delivery capacity, which has been extended through the expansion

of its current branches in Belgium and South America and the start of new ventures in theUnited States and Eastern Europe.

The intense research activity that supports our offer is the best way to guarantee protectionof the investments our customers will make in their systems in Italy and abroad.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

The ICT development of recent years has been characterised by two phenomena: theforceful thrust coming from technology users, the so-called prosumers who are the trueforce behind innovation; and intelligence, meaning the ability to process information andinterconnect it through all the electronic devices sold on the market.Engineering is committed to the constant monitoring of market scenarios in regards to theevolution of technology. Our work tries to find answers to questions that will have an increasing impact on thetechnologies market: for example, what effects will the thrust of the prosumers, the playersand protagonists of subjects such as social networking and social media, have? Alternatively, how can companies exploit the potential offered by widespread intelligence, also known bythe technical term ‘Internet of Things’?

The guiding light in such research is the study of technological subjects which are destinedto open up new business opportunities. The aim is to transfer tested, verified innovationsto market reality as well as our business model. It is more than simply a good idea, it’s also a good idea that we need.

Engineering prefers a collaborative approach between laboratories and business units.Researchers, specialists in the centres of competence, and architectural and technologicalconsultancy teams transform research results into developments in the Group’s offer, whilemaintaining close communication with people throughout the company.

THE TECHNOLOGICAL CONTEXT AT THE CENTRE

The areas of research on which the department concentrates stem from the current technological context. One such driver is the continuous, progressive increase in multimedia content on the network and the fact thatmost users are now both consumers and producers of content.Engineering has several research projects in regards to these matters: Pharos, Callas and Assets for example, address the subjects of media and digital content and the study and development of innovative techniques for theuse and storage of multimedia content. The PHAROS project, coordinated by Engineering, is a best practice of international innovation with respect tosearch. It is no coincidence that the Italian government selected the project as an example of excellence in Italianinnovation at the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The centre of competence known as Broadband Media Services completes the process on this subject and hasresponsibility for transferring frontier knowledge on digital media to the Group’s offer and the market.

THE FUTURE IS INTERACTIVE

A second driver is interactivity between man and technology. The projects X@Work, Tekne, X-NetLab, test technologies and methods that support internetworked enterprise andthe Internet of services, using solutions for the transposition of social networking models and technologies tocompany processes.

The generation of digital natives that we are preparing will seek to interact with the Public Administration, followingmodes similar to those which are used in social networks today. This belief is the basis for a line of research whichlooks into how the Public Administration’s processes and systems will change in order to meet the emerging needsof a digital society. The CockPit project, which is part of this line, works to define a new model of e-government based on thetransposition of ‘service science’ paradigms to the relationship between the Public Administration and the citizenry.

The new e-government models which have been created and built within our research projects have improved thecompany’s offer for the Public Administration. We call this innovation MyCity.Internet of Things is no longer simply a slogan. It is now a technological reality which is opening up new scenarios.Technology now allows us to transform many silent objects into ‘intelligent objects’ which are able to perform tasks, produce information and exchange data.Research in regards to intelligent systems at Engineering explores the possibility of using these technologies invarious business domains. The Traceback and Foodsys projects, for example, concentrate on the application ofsoftware technologies for intelligent systems in the agriculture and food industry.Games and BeAware apply intelligent systems techniques to the development and testing of solutions formonitoring and controlling energy consumption: not only at data centres but also in terms of domestic electricityconsumption.

Page 26: Group Profile 2009 Eng

25

INFRASTRUCTURAL RESEARCH

The profile of the digital user continues to change, and consequently services and contents which can be used onthe network are growing in a disorderly fashion. These two evolutionary factors are bringing about profound changesin technological and application infrastructures. The creation of new models for providing processing capacity (Infrastructure as a Service, Software as a Serviceand more generally Cloud Computing), the search for new solutions suited to growing security needs, andarchitecture design for new-concept services are the subjects of other lines of research. The project Nexof-Ra, which aims to create the reference architecture of a European middleware for softwaresystems aimed at services, and Sla@Soi which will build a framework to automate the stipulation and managementof agreements on the levels of service in SOA architectures, are examples of service engineering.Infrastructures and cloud services, in regards to the new delivery models which are being established, are beingresearched in the Grifin, Etics2, e4Science projects. We believe in the principle that research work must have a connection with the company’s market proposition. Therefore, some time ago we also initiated a close collaboration with the Managed Operations Department, whichworks on managed processing infrastructures in the Group, in regards to the subject of new delivery models.

The Security Engineering area studies and tests methods and techniques for the prevention of risksituations in critical systems, controlling and managing their security as they operate. The Master project, inparticular, develops the design, management and control of security compliance of service architectures.

OPEN SOURCE AND EUROPEAN PLATFORMS

Engineering is a system integrator as well as a pioneer - in fact, a leading player - in Open Source softwaredesign on an international scale.A family of Open Source solutions - Spago, SpagoBI, Spagic, Spago4Q - are used and integrated in marketprojects created by Engineering for customers, and these are valid as alternatives to commercial products. If, on one hand, the increase of Open Source solutions indicates the market is obstructing the use of this type ofsoftware less and less, it has, on the other hand, shown the need to offer customers tools for choosing the mostsuitable, reliable solutions. The research projectQualipso has, as its goal , the definition of a method and the creation of a range of tools by whichto assess the quality of Open Source solutions to be used in complex organisational contexts. Qualipso was theincubator for the birth of the Centre of Competence for Open Source in Public Administration, being the subject of amemorandum of intent in Italy between Engineering and the Ministry of Public Administration and TechnologicalInnovation. Comparison and the exchange of ideas with other realities each play a vital role in research.Engineering’s network of scientific and institutional relations is extremely far-reaching: it comprises a network of 150partnerships in operation around the world. Most importantly, Engineering is a participant in the European technological platforms Nessi for software andservices (Engineering is a founding member and the current vice president of the Board); Nem, for media, communication and technologies convergence (Engineering is a member of the Steering Board); and Eos, for newhomeland security solutions (Engineering is a member of the Board).
