Automatic Weight Compliance using Weigh-In-Motion (WIM)

IRD’s GateWeigh is an automated Slow Speed Weigh-in-Motion (SSWIM) System capable of weighing vehicles at slow speeds (0-21 kph or 0-13 mph). The system can weigh with a high degree of accuracy while the vehicle is in motion. Each axle weight can be automatically checked using the bridge formula, which creates a more comprehensive measure than a static scale.

ApplicationsFreight Terminals, Container Ports and Warehouse Operators

• Automatically weigh vehicles as they enter or leave

Border Crossings• Compare weights of sealed trailers at multiple locations

Waste Management and Recycling Facilities• Know the weight of waste material

Mining, Aggregate, Forestry• Measure weights of raw materials (not legal for trade)

Toll• Automatically weigh heavy trucks at toll facilities

Benefits• Maximize payloads• Ensure weight compliance• Optimize and check weight distribution• Protect vehicles from overloading, reduce maintenance• Increase throughput compared with static scales• Complement mainline heavy vehicle screening• Automate weighing• Enhance security

System OperationIRD’s SSWIM System incorporates the Model 4020 WIM Scale, in road sensors, a processor unit, a traffic control signal, a VMS (variable message sign) and a printer. The truck driver is directed by the traffic control signal to drive over the scale at a slow speed. The individual axle weights are calculated and the system performs weight compliance checks. The driver is notified of the results by the VMS. The user then has the option of printing a ticket for weight verification. Optionally, data is stored in a database should further analysis be desired. Multiple components can be added to the base SSWIM system to add functionality. LPR (license plate recognition) cameras and AVI (automated vehicle identification) can be added for security, and overheight detectors can be added to ensure compliance with height restrictions.

AccuracyThe Model 4020 Scale system meets or exceeds the ASTM E 1318-09 Type IV specification for WIM accuracy. The accuracy of the system increases with a decrease in speed. The WIM site/ramp must also meet construction requirements as identified for ASTM 1318 Type IV System installation.

*Dynamic accuracy is specified for a 95% confidence level when installed as per IRD recommendations.

The system will weigh with an accuracy of +/-0.5% full scale in optional static mode.
