shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter

of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that

decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.

conduct investigations to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the

path of a beam of light.

K-2 ETS1-1: Engineering Design: Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a

situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development

of a new or improved object or tool.

TIME FRAME: 15 minutes

Activity Directions:

OBJECTIVE: Describe the whole circle (or rectangle) partitioned into two or four equal shares as "two

of", or "four of" the shares.

STANDARD(S): 1.G.A.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the

shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter

of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that

decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.

Activity Directions: Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, White

House, Bald Eagle, Mt. Rushmore, American Flag, Capitol Building

Continue creating a booklet to show the American symbols we learned about. Label your pictures.

Then share your book with someone. Tell them a fact about each symbol.
