New Life – By Matt Fotia
Classy Yarra Junction half back flanker Josh Hammen says he is enjoying life with the Eagles, after his side ran out 26 point winners over Yarra Glen in a hotly contested game at the weekend.
The win put the Eagles back on the winners list after they suffered just their second loss for the season against Seville the week before, relinquishing their grip on top spot in the process.
Hammen says whilst the Eagles were disappointed with their performance against the Blues, the loss might’ve been the catalyst they needed for a strong run into finals, as they look to defend their Division Two crown.
“You need those losses throughout the year, because sometimes you can get ahead of yourself when you’re beating teams comfortably,”
“Your structures fall down and everything becomes too easy and you just forget - so this week we wanted to go back to hard football.”
Hammen has been a key cog in the Eagles defence this season, providing a cool head and reliable ball use.
He says the Junction defenders set the tone for the side each week as they look to adapt to each of their opponents.
“When we get in our groups the backs always set the tone, because not every opponent is the same, so you’ve got to adapt to what’s going on,”
“It’s a game by game basis, obviously you work on your zones and what you want to do, but it doesn’t always go your way.”
It definitely wasn’t all the Eagles way on the weekend with Yarra Glen controlling the game for periods of the encounter. Lachlan Telford kicked four goals for the afternoon, three of which came in the second quarter as the RiverPigs forwards began to get on top of Hammen and co.
However Hammen and fellow defender Dylan Brookes were able to think on their feet and adapt the Eagles set up behind the ball to counteract the RiverPigs threat.
“They really did beat us one on one, so we adapted our zone because we were a bit too far up and they were getting out the back,”
“Probably Me or Brookesy (make the call), it’s been me most of the year but now Brookesy is back we work it out between us,”
“We have conversations at quarter time, half time and so on to figure it out and regroup, but you have to have to be able to adapt on the spot or else they’ll kick two, three or four goals,”
“So what’s the point of waiting.”
Hammen has spent all of his previous footballing
days at Mooroolbark in the Eastern Football League and took 2018 off to help deal with some ongoing injuries. At times he thought he would never go back to playing, but Eagles coach John Holmes was able to sway him around.
“I was originally from Mooroolbark and Holmesy got me across this year,”
“He spoke to me last year, which I’d taken off due to injury and I wasn’t planning on returning to football, but here we are,”
“It’s been really good, I’ve really enjoyed my football this year,”
“We’ve got a really mixed group who come from wherever so I’m really loving it, it is like a new life in football for me.”

Worksafe Report
2019 AFL National Inclusion Carnival The 2019 AFL National Inclusion Carnival has successfully concluded following a week-long carnival in Blacktown, New South Wales.
The AFL National Inclusion Carnival brings together male footballers aged 16 years and over with an intellectual disability from across the country to take part in a round-robin carnival.
Throughout the week, players took part in a number of educational sessions, competed in a Lightning Carnival and a three-match round robin series in their respective Divisions, before playing finals under lights at Blacktown International Sportspark on Friday July 19.
For the first time ever, a female super clinic was featured at the National Inclusion Carnival, to support the growth of the sport in the female inclusion space.
For many years, players with intellectual disabilities from Victoria and South Australia competed in an annual State of Origin match. In 2013, players from NSW/ACT joined the carnival and Victoria was split into two teams (Metro and Country) to form a four-team competition.
Victoria Country was victorious in the 2014 carnival. The following year, Victoria Metro claimed the honours and went on to claim the next three Division 1 titles, defeating South Australia in Melbourne in 2016, NSW/ACT on the Gold Coast in 2017 and most recently South Australia in Tasmania in 2018.
Congratulations to Blade Richardson who was
Most Valuable Player for Victoria Country at this year’s carnival.
The AFL has also announced the 2019 Inclusion All-Australian squad, with AFL Victoria Country’s Steven Reeves as coach.
The respective squad of 26 men have been chosen based on each player’s demonstration of leadership, passion, teamwork and outstanding football ability.
For the first time, the All-Australian squad will travel to Brisbane to take part in an exhibition match at the 2019 INAS Global Games in October.
Congratulations to the following Victorian players who will be representing the state in the 2019 AFL Inclusion All-Australian squad.

Michelle Jack - 400 Games
Any young netballer aspiring to become a leader of their sport, or a tireless volunteer to their community has the perfect role model to follow in Alexandra’s local lady Michelle Jack.
Michelle began her affiliation with the Alexandra Football/Netball Club in 1999 and was inducted as Life Member in 2007.
Michelle has worked tirelessly as a Club / Community volunteer for two decades, fulfilling many roles and responsibilities vital to the operation of competition. Her leadership and her capacity to volunteer sets an example to other netballers and community members of all ages as she demonstrates exemplary management practices and is committed to meeting the needs of our small country town of Alexandra.
To attract the “non-traditional” participants over the years, Michelle has gone above and beyond to engage younger children in the Net-Set-Go Program. Also, as Junior B netball co-ordinator with the Cluster of Primary Schools in our local
area (6 schools in total) being an inclusive and sustainable program aimed
at school boys and girls (Grade 4/5/6) playing
competitively each Wednesday night during the Netball season.
Of course, Michelle coached and
umpired in this competition as well. She was also on the committee and heavily involved in engaging the men in
Alexandra to establish a strong, vibrant Mixed Netball competition which runs weekly throughout the season within
our district netball club.
Michelle has never been carried away with personal achievement titles such as Life Member, Coach, Captain or Umpire although she usually carries these titles all at the same time!
She has always maintained quality leadership and upheld the utmost respect from all who have played alongside her, against her or who have umpired her.
Michelle has an amazing ability to bring energy to each and every task that she sets her mind to. She is fantastic to work with; exuding energy and approaching all tasks with enthusiasm and drive. Her positive spirit motivates and inspires others, leaving a lasting impression on the people in our community.
Michelle initiates and coordinates fundraising and social activities for the Club which reinforces the strength of the netball community in many ways, but also adds to the enjoyment of all participating.
She has also been a major influence in supporting the Club to apply for grants which provided new netball courts and facilities.
Her passion: Just like energy, is infectious. Whether she brings her passion to a meeting or when she is playing the sport or from time to time umpiring, the most mundane of tasks are enjoyed. Her greatest impact in her volunteer work is that she is truly passionate about making sure everyone has an opportunity to participate in the game of Netball.
As a volunteer, Michelle demonstrates reliability. Michelle is vital to both the Alexandra Football/Netball Club and the Alexandra District Netball Club, because she can be trusted to always complete her set tasks efficiently, resulting in both netball clubs having great reputations.
On Saturday, 3rd August, Michelle will play her 400th game for the Alexandra Football/Netball Club and everyone wishes her well.
Congratulations Michelle!

Simone Traynor - 200 Games
Simone Traynor reaches the milestone of 200 games for PFNC this weekend.
Simone is one of 3 players who have played every season since Powelltown netball started in 2007.
Simone has been a wonderful servant to the club as a player & coach, was an important member of
our first premiership team - A Grade in 2009, then backed it up in 2010 when we won premierships
in all grades. In 2011 Simone was a member of the runner-up A Grade team, then won
another premiership in B Grade in 2012, where she was awarded Best on Court.
Simone spent most of her Powelly career in defence, where she was a strong and reliable defender, but has recently made the change into goals, where she leads by example and never gives up. She has won many awards at both ends of the court.
Simone coached C & D Grade very successfully between 2014 & 2018, and in 2019 she is taking a break from coaching to concentrate on playing.
In 2017 Simone played her first game with daughter Sonja and has played many games with her since.
Simone has always been a fantastic club person, willing to help out where required, and is very supportive of all players in all grades.
Simone is a true Demon & champion of the club - not bad considering she was only planning to ‘fill-in’ for a couple of games in 2007!
Congratulations from everyone at Powelly on this amazing achievement!

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia
Another massive weekend of football has passed us by and more conundrums have crossed our paths. There are swings and roundabouts for the Eagles and Dogs, a RiverPig mudslide and a closer look at the run home and first week of finals in each division. It’s the Football Review.
1. Swings and Roundabouts
There’s been much conjecture about the scheduling of byes in the Premier Division this season. Each club has two byes due to the odd number of sides, along with two extra whole division byes.
The first of these was for the Outer East’s participation in the AFL Victoria Community Championships and the second for the Victorian Country v Victorian Amateur Football Association, where Outer East players are eligible for selection.
The latter of these two byes has been the most controversial as no Outer East players were selected, leaving clubs aggrieved by the lack of continuity they were being force-fed. Whilst most clubs haven’t been too affected by the bye, two clubs have had their seasons fortunes aggressively changed post bye in Beaconsfield and Wandin.
The Eagles had won six games on the bounce heading into the Vic Country v VAFA bye, with their last two wins against familiar foes in Cranbourne and Narre Warren lifting them from outside chance to genuine premiership smoky.
They were running like a well oiled machine with Leigh McQuillen’s detailed approach seeing them keep Cranbourne to just 30 points and Narre Warren to 59 points as they looked set to lock down the double chance.
But the bye seems to have put a halt to this run. The Eagles went down to the then sixth placed Wandin the week after the bye, their defensive structures either rusty or blown apart by the chaotic nature of the Dogs ball movement.
That result left them licking their wounds during the build up to their clash with premiership favourite and arch rivals Berwick. Whilst they were able to compete with the Wickers, they were unable to maintain the standard and went down comfortably.
The Eagles are now fourth with two crucial games to come against Olinda Ferny Creek (away) and Woori Yallock (away), where a loss to either side will sentence them to a fourth placed finish and an elimination showdown.
Wandin had split the difference in the six weeks leading up to the aforementioned Vic Country v VAFA bye. They’d steadied the ship with three wins through the middle after their horror start to the season, but went into the bye thinking about what could’ve been after consecutive defeats to Berwick and Woori Yallock. They’d faded in those two matches, lacked their usual vigour and seemed very unlikely to make the finals after the loss to the Tigers.
But with wins over both Eagles (Beaconsfield and Cranbourne) post the bye, the Dogs have roared into the five and are now in complete control of their own destiny, favourites for three of their last four matches.
The two sides probably have differing views on the bye. But it looks like it has set them up for a meeting in the first week of finals and if their last meeting was anything to go by, we should be thankful for the bye.
2. RiverPig Mud Slide
Yarra Glen went down to Yarra Junction on the weekend by 27 points in an enthralling contest that ebbed and flowed throughout the day, as the RiverPigs took it up to the Eagles on their home deck.
They kicked the opening two goals of the last quarter to bring the margin back to within two goals as Billy Gardner (two goals), Daniel Hurley, Austin Smith and Lachlan Telford (four goals) took it up to the Eagles and their star studded midfield.
The Eagles were able to lift though as experienced heads Allan Chandler, David Johnson and John Holmes lead the resistance to will the Eagles over the line for the 12th time this season. The Eagles win has left Yarra Glen in the previously unfathomable position of missing the finals with the RiverPigs drifting back to fifth after Gembrook-Cockatoo’s percentage boosting win on the weekend.
Powelltown’s shock win over Kinglake didn’t help their cause either, with the Towner’s now just a game back from the RiverPigs, but technically on the same points as they’re yet to have their second bye for 2019.
The good news for Yarra Glen is the fact that they play both of these two sides in the remaining three rounds. It leaves them with control over their 2019 season. If they’re able to win both of those games they’ll go into the finals in fourth position, with a recent win over their elimination final opponents and the knowledge that their best football is good enough to challenge the top three.
Split the difference against the Demons and Brookers and percentage will have a massive part to play.
Lose both and September getaways will be high on the priority list.
3. The Run Home
There’s just three weeks left before the 2019 AFL Outer East Finals Series kicks off and there is still so much left undecided.
Who will finish fifth in Premier Division and Division Two?
Will Woori Yallock hang on to the double chance?
Can Pakenham usurp Monbulk for the week off and could Powelltown end up in fourth position?

OUTER EAST
From the Media Desk continued
We decided to jump on the SportsTg predictor and see how each Division will end up and who will take on who in week one of their respective finals.
Division Two
Next weekend shapes up as a massive one in Division Two with Yarra Glen travelling out to Powelltown with the Towner’s fresh off a big win over Kinglake. It’ll be a tight one, with the RiverPigs scraping home in their earlier clash by just one point. This time around we think the Demons will get over the line, home ground advantage coming into it.
Gembrook-Cockatoo travel to Seville where a win over the Blues would more or less book them a spot in the finals. We don’t see it happening though - the Blues are in too good of form.
Round 17 sees Kinglake host Yarra Junction, where the Lakers can give the Blues the week off with a win over the Eagles. However we think Yarra Junction will keep the race for first alive with an away win over Andrew Fairchild’s men.
Yarra Glen travel to Gembrook-Cockatoo in the final round of the year and we think it’ll be a play off for fifth with Powelltown having Yea and the bye to finish off their home and away season.
It’ll be another tight one, but we think the Brookers might just have enough at home, sentencing the RiverPigs to an early finish to 2019.
Predicted Top Six 1. Seville - 64 points - 224%2. Yarra Junction - 64 - 189%3. Kinglake - 52 - 125%4. Powelltown - 44 - 127%5. Gembrook-Cockatoo - 44 - 124% 6. Yarra Glen - 40 - 123%
Projected First Week of Finals
Qualifying Final - Yarra Junction v Kinglake
Elimination Final - Powelltown v Gembrook-Cockatoo
Division One
This weekend sees Round 13’s completion and it pits the likely elimination finalists against each other as Mount Evelyn host Officer. We can’t look past the Rovers at home after the way they’ve previously knocked off Doveton and Pakenham at home.
The Doves host Monbulk on their home deck in Round 14 and it shapes as a big one, especially considering their first meeting. Home ground advantage comes into it and the Hawks may still have a few key players out of their side - Doves win.
Doveton then go on to host Pakenham the following weekend, but after the way Pakenham dismantled them earlier in the season and the way they’ve continued the grow throughout the season,
we can’t go past the Lions. Round 15 also sees Monbulk play Mount Evelyn again and we think the Hawks will complete a clean sweep over the Rovers, especially on their home patch.
Pakenham host Officer in the final round of the season and despite the Roos impressive form of late, it’ll be the Lions who enter finals on a winning note.
Predicted Top Five
1. Pakenham - 56 points - 171%
2. Monbulk - 56 - 165%
3. Doveton - 44 - 122%
4. Mount Evelyn - 36 - 126%
5. Officer - 32 - 130%
Projected First Week of Finals
Qualifying Final - Monbulk v Doveton
Elimination Final - Mount Evelyn v Officer
Premier Division
Round 14 is a massive one with Wandin hosting Narre Warren and Woori Yallock welcoming Berwick to the Tigers den. Despite the home ground advantage we think the top two will have too much for the Dogs and Tigers, but good games of football should ensue.
Beaconsfield travel to Olinda Ferny Creek in round 15 as the Bloods look to keep their slim finals chances alive. Despite the recent form of both sides indicating the Bloods should be favourites, we think Leigh McQuillen’s troops will have enough to sneak a crucial away win.
Cranbourne should reverse their earlier loss to Olinda Ferny Creek on their home deck in round 17 whilst Narre Warren should win against Woori Yallock at Kalora Park. The Magpies will then host Berwick, meeting the Wickers for the first time since April 6th. We’ve got the home side winning this one by just one kick, although it shouldn’t effect the ladder.
Woori Yallock and Beaconsfield play off for the double chance at Woori Yallock and like their first encounter we see the home side coming out on top, booking themselves a spot in the Qualifying Final.
Predicted Top Six1. Berwick - 64 points - 214%2. Narre Warren - 64 - 191%3. Woori Yallock - 50 - 107%4. Beaconsfield - 48 - 149% 5. Wandin - 44 - 86% 6. Cranbourne - 38 - 127%

Message from TACSemi Final - Veterans @ Narre Warren
Sporting clubs across Victoria score road safety goals with TAC’s Towards Zero Round
Football and netball clubs across Victoria will go the extra mile to tackle road safety next month, as they help kick off the inaugural TAC Towards Zero Round.
For the first time in the TAC’s 28-year-long partnership with AFL Victoria, the TAC is coordinating a state-wide, fixtured round for all grassroots and community football and netball clubs from August 2-4.
Through the TAC’s partnership with AFL Victoria, the Towards Zero Round will enable the TAC to share the message of road safety with more than 400,000 Victorians who are involved in local sporting clubs across the state.
The round will see more than 1,000 local football captains, as well as other team players, wearing the number 0 on their backs instead of their usual jumper number. VFL, VFL women’s, netball players and junior footballers will also be involved in the initiative, with TAC rolling out a range of additional activities throughout the weekend.
TAC Acting Chief Executive Officer Bruce Crossett said the Towards Zero round aims to highlight the real value of reaching zero deaths on our roads and why it’s something all Victorians should be working towards.
“Grassroots football and netball clubs are the life blood of their communities and I’m sure you would be hard pressed to find someone involved who hasn’t been affected by road trauma,” Mr Crossett said.
“We believe that zero is the only acceptable number of deaths on our roads, but we need everyone to play their part,” he said.
“This round is putting road safety at the fore and we’re asking everyone to prioritise safety to make sure every journey is a safe one.”
Recent research from La Trobe University and AFL Victoria has highlighted the true value football clubs have for their wider communities, revealing that for every player, football clubs reach 10 people in their community.
“The thousands of football and netball players right across the state cover hundreds of kilometres travelling to games throughout the season”, Mr Crossett said.
“Through our partnership with AFL Victoria, and the launch of the Towards Zero Round, we’re able to have a direct conversation with those Victorians about the role they play in making our roads safer and working towards zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” he said.
Alarmingly, 165 Victorians have already lost their lives on the roads this year, up from 104 at the same time as last year (56-per-cent increase). Tragically, 95 of these deaths have occurred on regional roads, compared with 52 the same time
in 2018.
The Towards Zero Round is a new approach by the TAC and AFL Victoria to engage the community and increase awareness about critical road safety issues. As part of this initiative, the TAC have also invested $300,000 in a Community Grants Program, where local clubs will have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $10,000.
Community members can help spread the message that ‘Zero is Possible’ by tagging TAC in your Towards Zero Round photos on social media by searching Transport Accident Commission (TAC) on Facebook and @tacvictoria on Instagram.
To find out more about the Toward Zero Round and to see if your club is eligible to apply for the Community Grants Program, visit aflvic.com.au.
