Breaking Even – By Matt Fotia

Kinglake’s playing coach Andrew Fairchild is confident that his side can match it with the top two in the ATC Traffic Division Two, after the Lakers ran away with a 28 point victory over Yarra Glen on the weekend.

The win saw Kinglake complete the double over Yarra Glen for season 2019 and climb two games clear of the RiverPigs on the Division Two ladder.

Fairchild, who added six more goals to his season tally on Saturday, said his side treated the top four clash as a ‘mini final’ as they looked to all but confirm the double chance for their first foray into finals since 2016.

Much like a final the Lakers didn’t have it all their own way, with Yarra Glen owning parts of the day, particularly the second quarter where they had 20 inside fifties to four.

Kinglake held firm throughout the period though, conceding just 3.7, despite the RiverPigs dominance, leaving Fairchild very content with the victory.

“Really pleased with the win, we toughed it out and found a way to win, I’m really happy with that,”

“Our back six were phenomenal all day and if it wasn’t for them we would’ve found ourselves in a pretty bad situation come half time,”

Breaking Even – continued

“They’ve been fantastic all year (the back six), even the games against Junction and Seville they actually held up pretty well.”

The Lakers started the season in incredible fashion, winning their first seven fixtures before suffering successive defeats at the hands of last seasons grand finalists and this seasons top two, Yarra Junction and Seville, to the collective tune of 164 points.

Fairchild still believes the Lakers best is good enough though, citing the periods of play in which they were able to control play against both sides, but knows their inability to maintain the level was fallible.

“In periods we played well against Junction and Seville,”

“We’re confident that what we can do stacks up, but only if we are prepared to do it for four quarters and we definitely didn’t do that against them,”

“We need 21 contributors to play the way we want to play and win games.”

Fairchild continued to praise the strength of his

side at either end of the ground, with likes of Horman, Burns and Fairchild himself providing more than adequate firepower up forward and Butterworth, Hannah and Douglas leading the defensive end well all season.

He believes that if his side can manage a breakeven in the middle of the ground they can take it up to anyone.

However creating a midfield breakeven is an enviable task against the likes of Yarra Junction and Seville.

“I’m very confident in our back six, I know Seville’s forwards are fantastic, but our back six has been equally impressive,”

“But if sides can get 50 plus entries (inside 50) it’s going to be hard for them (the back six),”

“So we have to rely on our midfield to breakeven at the very least and if we can do that we are confident that our forward line will perform and of course our back six is strong enough,”

“We’ll be putting a bit of effort into them (Yarra Junction and Seville) that’s for sure.”

Worksafe Report

AFL VICTORIA MID-SEASON UPDATEOver recent weeks, AFL Victoria has been meeting with all Region Commission Chairs, Region General Manager’s and other stakeholders to discuss a number of challenges facing the sport. Pleasingly, a consistent theme across the state was a willingness for all football stakeholders to work together to address these challenges.

There is no doubt local football holds a special place in this state. We all acknowledge the importance of football clubs to the fabric of communities and the importance communities place on their local club. As traditional football structures are impacted by external factors, our ability to adapt our strategies to deal with these will be critical.

Demographic changes, particularly population decline and an aging of the population in many regional areas are impacting on the availability of participants for local clubs and leagues. The increasing range of recreation pursuits available for young people, and particularly the impact of technology on their leisure time makes engaging and retaining this age group challenging. These factors combined with the ongoing strain on volunteers who are managing clubs in an increasingly complex environment drive the need for us to evolve our approach to supporting country football.

In response to these challenges, AFL Victoria is currently undertaking several initiatives, including:

Benchmarking and Structure ReviewAFL Victoria is currently assessing their progress against the recommendations outlined in the 2011 Review of Football in Country Victoria. The project was discussed at the Country Commission and Leagues conference in March and additional consultations will be undertaken over the next few months. Whilst many of the recommendations outlined in the Peter Jackson review have been implemented, it is recognised that much has changed over time and our structures and levels of support need to evolve with this changing landscape. Although our benchmarking indicates football remains one of the most affordable sports in the state, the project will ensure the most efficient structures are in place to maintain this affordability.

Junior Pathways and TransitionIt is pleasing to see that statewide Auskick registrations are up on year to date figures following the implementation of the refreshed Auskick program in 2018. The next stage is to improve the

transition from Auskick to junior football. The AFL has undertaken significant research on the critical factors in kids transitioning from Auskick to club football. Consultation with Leagues and Commissions will be occurring over the next few months to discuss local strategies to improve transition rates. In addition, we are working with several leagues on youth transition. Many leagues are finding that age group increasingly difficult to engage and retain. Working with these leagues, we are investigating transition rates within this age group, best competition structures to support their retention and transition into senior ranks and other factors impacting on participation choices at this age.

Volunteer Support Whilst we have invested in additional Football Development Managers over the years to work in supporting local clubs, it is clear more needs to be done in this space. The AFL is currently developing an on-line portal aimed specifically at club volunteers to provide easy to access, practical information and support tools, which is expected to launch prior to the 2020 season. Aligned to this is the need for more face to face support and we are examining options for how this can be provided and delivered.

Netball RelationshipFootball and netball have been sports with a close alignment, particularly in country Victoria. Both AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria believe that we can reach even better community outcomes by strengthening the partnership through joint strategies and initiatives to better support our regions, leagues and local clubs.

In an effort to work more closely together, AFL Vic and Netball Vic, with the support of Sport & Recreation Victoria, has recently signed off on a terms of reference for a project that will examine best structure/arrangements to support strong and sustainable football/netball clubs playing in leagues across the state.

Whilst we focus on these important initiatives, we continue to invest in our Football Development Manager workforce, introductory programs in schools, facility planning and projects, coach development and in engaging diverse communities in our game.

AFL Victoria would like to thank you for your ongoing support of country footy and enjoy the game today.

Mount Evelyn have plenty of room for improvement after an inconsistent first few months of the Hallam and Bayswater Truck Centres Division One season according to Senior Coach Mark Fisher.

The Rovers sit fourth on the ladder with six wins and five losses and are coming off an impressive come-from-behind three point victory over an inaccurate Pakenham outfit at the weekend, 8.3(51) to 6.11(47).

The Rovers trailed by 11 points at halftime before kicking six goals to three in the second half to grab just their second win over a fellow top five side for season 2019.

Fisher says the Rovers were able to take away Pakenham’s ability to move the ball freely in the second half with an increase in pressure, before taking advantage of the weather induced territory battle to pinch victory.

“We took away their want and ability to shift the ball around the contest and that took away one of their main weapons,”

“We haven’t been able to bring it (pressure) on a consistent basis (this year), but it came to the fore in the second half and evened the game out,”

“It ended up just being a territory battle and in the fourth term it was probably 50-50 but ended up our end at the backend (of the quarter) and we got over the top of them.”

Pressure on the ball carrier is a much spoken about prong in Fisher’s game plan, and whilst they haven’t been able to maintain the necessary levels all season, Fisher believes it’s been the Rovers

ball use that has let them down more than their fluctuating pressure levels this season.

“It’s a big part of our gameplan, but it’s not solely what it’s based around, it’s how we get the ball the ball back, but it’s what we do when we get the ball back that’s been letting us down.”

Despite having lost on both occasions they’ve played on bigger grounds, Fisher refuses to buy in to the big ground little ground theory regarding his unit.

“I don’t buy into the big ground, little ground thing, we can and we need to do it (the gameplan) and sustain it for long enough.”

It’s been an up and down year for the Rovers as they’ve run the undefeated Monbulk close on two occasions, defeated the second and third placed sides in Pakenham and Doveton, but also lost to the bottom of the ladder Warburton Millgrove in round eight by two points.

Fisher has put this erratic behaviour down to the mental immaturity of his young side, who are yet to hit their straps in 2019.

“It’s more the mental side of it, we’re plenty fit enough and we aren’t mentally weak, it’s just young blokes learning to stick at it for longer and we’re progressively getting there,”

“We’ve got truckloads of room for improvement.”

“Everyone else will probably say the same thing, but everyone else is going and going consistently whereas we are very inconsistent,”

“If we can get some consistency, that’ll be the big difference for us.”

Umpiring News….

Isaac Sims is our umpire in profile this week. Isaac is in his 2nd season as a goal umpire and has shown great improvement through his willingness to listen, learn and implement suggestions and advice, which makes him very coachable. We thank Isaac for sharing his thoughts and for giving us the opportunity to learn more about him. All the best for the rest of the season and your future studies.

What school do you attend and what year level ?I’m in my second year at Monash University, in Clayton.

Are your subjects directed to a certain occupation choice ?I’m studying Aerospace Engineering – which includes an unfortunate amount of Maths!

What got you into umpiring and do you have another part time job ?I did an umpiring course at high school (Billanook College) which prompted me to respond to some online advertising I saw. The team environment at training made me keen to stick around. I do cafe work on Sundays.

Do you play other sports or how do you like to spend your leisure time ?I’m a keen cross country skier, and I play cricket, quite poorly, over summer. Most of my spare time these days is spent designing and building high powered rocket motors as part of a student team.

What is your favourite ground ?Bit of a toss up between Alex and Olinda –

always a brilliant spread after the game from these clubs. Narre Warren is showing some promising signs in this regard too...

What is your favourite holiday destination ?Wherever the wind blows me. Hamburg, in Germany, is the best city I’ve been to.

What type of music do you like and is there a TV show you never miss ?My musical tastes are many and varied, but you can’t go past the Killers, or a bit of Chisel. Seldom have the time to watch TV.

Do you have a sporting hero and name two famous people you would like to meet ?My sporting hero is Steven

Bradbury – well worth reading about his journey to be in that Olympic final, there’s a lot more to it than just luck. I don’t have a burning desire to meet any famous people, really.

What area of your umpiring discipline do you think has improved the most ?Probably changing position from under the flight of the ball to on-line.

Is there one thing about umpiring that has surprised you ?A player ran into me last year as I came around onto the line – that was a surprise! The most surprising aspect of umpiring in general has been the team environment we’re working in. It actually feels a lot like a football team, to me.

Have a great day and enjoy the footy and netball.

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia

Last weekend gave us perfect conditions for football and this weekend gave us anything but, as players braved chilly winds, persistent bands of rain, dark clouds, sheets of hail and - on occasion - glaring sun-shine, as the story of AFL Outer East Division One and Two season continued to be told.

It’s the Football Review.

1. Need a bigger RiverPig

Kinglake all but confirmed its spot in the Division Two top three on the weekend as the Lakers finished 28 point victors over Yarra Glen on the RiverPigs home deck, winning 15.13(103) to 10.15(75), with playing coach Andrew Fairchild booting six majors.

But it wasn’t all the Lakers way. During the second quarter they clung on for dear life as Yarra Glen upped their tackle pressure, caused multiple turnovers, dominated possession and had 20 inside fifties to just four.

The RiverPigs won the quarter by 17 points, but would’ve gone into the sheds at halftime aggrieved at the regularity at which Jayden Butterworth and co were able to intercept their forward forays and their own ina-bility to capitalise on said dominance.

But the Yarra Glen forward set up played right into the Lakers hands.

Jayden Schille and Adam Moate took turns as the focal point for the men in Red and Black and whilst both men are dangerous attackers in their own right, high and/or contested marking is not their forte.

Tim Ekers popped up in the last quarter to kick three majors and showcase his ability as a forward threat but he too lacks the physical dimensions to play as the number one forward. Plus his clearance work is pretty important up the ground too.

The RiverPigs leading goal kicker for the season is Jiemba Smith, who has 27 goals and when he lines up they look much more dangerous going forward. He provides them a get out of jail option when sides are set up well behind the ball and he also allows players like Schille, Moate and Ekers to take the lesser de-fenders.

All three of the sides above Yarra Glen have these marking targets.

Yarra Junction have David Johnson and Tyson Wheeler, Seville have a plethora in O’Keefe, Rattray, Fraser and Neal, whilst Kinglake have the aforementioned Fairchild, Chris Horman and the impressive Aron Burns.

If Smith is set to miss a substantial amount of football then Yarra Glen need to find a replacement marking target. Nathan McCulloch showed promise when thrown down forward but seems a much more natural defender, preferring to be led to the ball. Joshua Clare jumps well at the football and could be the man to fill the void Jiemba has left, but is of slight build.

Whoever it may be, the RiverPigs need to find themselves a big, strong marking target and they need to find him quick.

2. Daimon’s Dream

Mount Evelyn proved once again how good a side they can be at home, knocking off Pakenham by four points, thanks to some accurate goal kicking, 8.3(51) to 6.11(47).

The win sees the Rovers maintain fourth position on the Division One ladder as they head into a big fort-night which sees them take on third placed Doveton and fifth placed Officer.

Daimon Kift booted two majors and was named the fourth best Rover on the weekend to continue an in-credible season.

The Mount Evelyn number 12 has kicked 16 goals for the season to be Mount Evelyn’s second leading goal kicker in 2019. He has hit the scoresheet in eight of his 11 appearances this season with a best of six majors in Mount Evelyn’s big win over Belgrave.

More notably Kift has been named in the best players every single week. He’s been named best on ground twice, against Monbulk in their round two classic and the next week against Emerald. He was second best on ground in their round six lost to Officer.

Kift is one of the more versatile players in the competition, let alone the Rovers 22, with an ability to play as a marking forward, both lead up and stay at home, play as an inside midfielder,

From the Media Desk continued

looking to bust tackles and win contested ball, as well as being one of the more reliable and cutting edge ball users for Mount Evelyn.

It’s been a somewhat topsy turvy season for the Rovers but Kift is someone that both Mark Fisher and the rest of the Mount Evelyn side can depend on - rain, hail or shine.

3. The Final Frontier

For a large chunk of the last quarter it seemed that Powelltown would be the side most likely to pinch the final spot in the Division Two top five, as the Towners held Gembrook-Cockatoo at an arms length, before the men in Green scrounged a late goal to finish three point winners, 8.7(55) to 7.10(52).

They have some steady heads (Bastow and Firrito) and some poor Powelltown goal kicking - Powelltown kicked 2.5 to 1.1 in the last quarter - to thank, but they got there in the end and now seem destined for some more finals action.

The Brookers are now a healthy chunk of percentage ahead of Alexandra and a game clear of Powelltown on the ladder, and will be hoping for an Alexandra victory next weekend when their two closest rivals do battle.

A win for the Rebels should rule Powelltown out of the running and with the Rebels taking on the top four sides in the final four weeks of the season, they too would be hard pressed to leapfrog the Brookers into the five.

Brad Coller’s men will now be looking to cross their final frontier - knocking off one of the top four - along with their quest for the complete performance.

They have two opportunities to do so before the finals series begins, when they travel to Seville in round 16 and host their likely elimination final opponents Yarra Glen in round 18.

Whilst it is of course not a prerequisite of a successful finals series to have defeated at least one of your fel-low finalists, it would help Brad Coller to convince his troops that they can compete with the sides above them, if they can snare a win in at least one of those two fixtures.

Gembrook-Cockatoo have showed that they have the ability to match it with the top four at times through-out the season, but a victory

gives the ‘theory’ validation - and let’s be honest - it would be better for the Brookers to head into a (likely) finals series with that sense of validation than not.
