This means that sellers of properties may be forced to settle these unsubstantiated debits in order to transfer their properties. In the past month, two lawyer’s letters have been sent to Umzinyathi requesting that the debits, which are not supported by documentary proof and are now prescribed, should be reversed. However there has not even been the courtesy of an acknowledgement from Umzinyathi. In a third lawyer’s letter sent this week on the rates clearance certificate, it is stated “This is clearly unsatisfactory and we are recommending to our clients that they should approach the court for an order that you reverse these debits unless you confirm in writing within seven days from the date hereof, that you will be doing so and that the reversal appears in the next state- ments”. Once again, residents are reminded to just pay the current amount on the Umzinyathi statements until the whole five year debacle is sorted out. STOP PRESS: DA Councillor Paul Buss in- formed by Umvoti Municipality that sellers must state water account in dispute with Umzinyathi when applying for rates clearance certificate. Water blackmail IT would be impossible to in- corporate his life in this short space as we all mourn, and celebrate, the life of one of the world's greatest icons – Nel- son Rolihlahla Mandela. He did not belong to South Africa only, as can be seen since the announcement of his death last Thursday night. The world has come to- gether not only to express their sadness, but also to cele- brate the hope and freedom he gave to so many. Born in Qunu in the Eastern Cape on 18 July 1918, he was given the name Nelson by a teacher at primary school. Having completed his BA and LLB, Mandela co–found- ed the ANC Youth League in 1944 – also the year he mar- ried his first wife, Evelyn. The year of 1952 saw the start of the defiance cam- paign and he was arrested and convicted for violating the Suppression of Commu- nism Act – the sentence was supended. In this year he opened the country's first black law firm with Oliver Tambo. He was arrested in 1956 with 155 others – they were tried for treason at a four year trial and all were acquitted in 1961. Nelson and Winnie Madiki- zela were married in 1958 and divorced in 1996. On his 80th birthday in 1998, Madi- ba married Graca Machel. The following year, stepped down after one term as presi- dent. When the government banned the ANC in 1960, Mandela went underground, formed uMkhonto we Sizwe and left the country for mili- tary training. He became known as the “Black Pimpernel” but on 5 August, 1961, was arrested near Howick on charges of in- citement and leaving the country illegally. The Rivonia sabotage trial started in 1963 and the fol- lowing year he was sen- tenced to life with nine others. Mandela served 27 years in prison on Robben Island, Pollsmoor and Victor Verster Prisons until 11 February, 1990 when President de Klerk granted him freedom. Elected as ANC deputy president, he became the first president of a democratic South Africa on 9 May, 1994, following the country's first ever democratic elections. This remarkable man, who challenged apartheid as “moral genocide” laid the foundations of a new South Africa through promoting a climate of forgiveness and peaceful reconciliation. Madiba cannot be replaced in person, but he has left a leg- acy of love, total dedication to equality for all and justice, and South Africans can hon- our this great gentle giant of a man by carrying out and liv- ing this legacy. Many of the most touching iconic images being viewed by millions throughout the world are of Madiba and children – in ac- cepting the Nobel Peace prize in 1993 he said “children are the most vulnerable citizens in any society ...and the great- est of our treasures”. The Mandela family have appealed to all to keep Nelson Mandela's dream alive through honouring humani- ty, and courage and raising up the poor, the downtrodden and the marginalised. He has finished his long walk to free- dom – now it is up to us to ac- cept and live his legacy. LALA NGOXOLO TATA Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013 “During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” HE HAS LEFT A LEGACY OF LOVE, TO- TAL DEDICATION TO EQUALITY FOR ALL AND JUSTICE, AND SOUTH AFRI- CANS CAN HONOUR THIS GREAT GENTLE GIANT OF A MAN BY CARRY- ING OUT AND LIVING THIS LEGACY.
