SECURING OUR BAYIT
As we head into 2019, we are asking the community to support the increased costs of securing our Bayit. Most of the work these
past few years has been funded by grants from the Dep’t of Homeland Security and staffed with countless volunteer hours from
members of our CSS team with limited use of general Shul funds. However, grants and volunteers cannot do everything. We need
your support, mostly for paid security on Friday night and to supplement the CSS team on Shabbat morning, but also for supplies
and equipment that are not covered by the grant programs. We estimate that our increased costs relative to security will be
approximately $36,000. As the Bayit has not historically imposed assessments on its members, we are hoping to raise the needed
amount through voluntary contributions.
Visit www.thebayit.org/security.

GREEN TEAM CLIMATE CORNER:
IT’S TIME TO START CLEANING FOR PASSOVER!
Did you know that many household cleaners contain volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and harsh
acids some of which are suspected or known to cause cancer
in humans. There are many easily available alternatives to those
regular cleaning products. Replace products with chemical
cleaning agents with safer options to keep potent toxins out of
your home. Check www.thebayit.org/green for safer options.

FREE SEDERS
Each year the Bayit hosts over 400
people for the Passover Seders. Join
us to eat, drink, celebrate and relive
the story of our Exodus at HIR’s Free
Passover Seders for either of our
two Seders on Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th at
8:15pm. In the spirit of the words of the Haggadah: “Let
anyone who is hungry enter and eat: let anyone who is needy
enter and join us in our Passover feast.” There is no charge to
attend a Seder at the Bayit but we do rely on your generosity
to cover the substantial cost of this program to sponsor the
Seder or to make a reservation please visit
www.thebayit.org/seder or call the office at
718-796-4730 x101.
CITY HARVEST PASSOVER
FOOD DRIVE
Help us feed hungry New Yorkers
this Pesach. We will be collecting
Kosher for Passover and Chametz
non-perishable, canned and packaged
food (sealed) in the coat room until Tuesday, April 9th at 4:00pm.
Collection tip: At this time of year many supermarkets offer a
free 5 lb pack of matzah with a $25 purchase. If you will be away
for Passover, or 5 lbs is more than you need, please contribute
your extra matza to the food drive.
SALE OF CHAMETZ
Before Pesach it is a requirement to eliminate all Chametz from
our possession. Halacha does allow for Chametz
(liquors, mixtures, etc.) to be sold to a non - Jew when
elimination is not an easy option. Arrangement for such sale can
be made through our Rabbinic staff using the HIR Chametz sale
contract which can be found at www.thebayit.org/chametz.
If you prefer, we welcome you to visit us at the synagogue to
complete the transaction in person. We will be available after
most Tefillot during the week. You can also arrange an
appointment with a member of the Rabbinic staff. Your
submission must be made by Thursday, April 18th. You can also
drop off or mail in a paper form to the office.
This year, Pesach 5779/2019, the general sale of Chametz will
take effect on Friday morning April 19th before 11:30am (the sale
for time zones east of Eastern Time will take place on Thursday
evening, April 18th before Mincha). All Chametz which was not
sold must be burned by 11:58am on Friday.
We never accept personal monetary gifts for this service. We
welcome Ma’ot Chittim contributions, cash or checks made out
to HIR with "Ma’ot Chittim" in the memo. All funds go to Pesach
needs and support needy people in our local community. You may
also donate online when you sell your Chametz or by clicking
here.
NOTE: Kitniyot (food made from legumes which are not eaten
by Ashkenazim on Pesach) need not be sold. Chametz utensils
should not be sold so as not to require a new Tevilah.
IMPORTANT: After submitting the form, you will receive an
email from Rav Steven confirming that your form has been
processed. If for any reason you do not get the confirmation
email, please contact the office at 718-796-4730 x101 for
assistance.
OU Passover Guides are available on the table in the
coatroom and in the HIR office.
