FROM MONSIGNOR BROCKMAN Farewell and Welcome – As I announced, it is a pleasure and honor to be welcoming on June 30, 2020, both of our newly ordained priests to our Cathedral parish community, Father Matthew Nwafor and Father Jairo Mol-donado, both ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Raleigh by Bishop Zarama on June 6, 2020. Father Nwafor has been appointed as Parochial Vicar here at Cathedral and Father Moldonado, to assist us temporarily in priestly ministry until September 2020, when we are expecting the arrival from Colombia of our additional appointed Parochial Vicar, Father Juan Andrés Gonzalez, CO. Father Gonzalez is a personal friend of Bishop Zarama and is a member of the Oratorian religious order, founded by Saint Philip Neri.

Additionally, I know you join me in expressing our great gratitude and assurances of continued prayers to both Father Pedro Munoz and Father John Kane as they both conclude their priestly ministry assignment to our Cathedral parish and transition to serve, respectively as Parochial Vicar at Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville and as Administrator of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Southern Pines.

In these waning days of precautions, we are challenged in offering a traditional farewell reception after the Sat-urday evening, Vigil of Sunday Mass and then a similar one to welcome our newly appointed clergy. Thus, as a way to express our affection, well wishes and prayers, we will be making available video messages from each priest, with the opportunity for you to add a personal written message to each priest. Additionally, Father Pedro and Father Kane will be available to greet you after each Mass on their last Sunday here at Cathedral, which is this weekend, June 28, 2020 and likewise Father Matthew and Father Jairo after each Mass on July 12, 2020. Re-call the current Sunday Mass schedule remains as follows: 8:00 and in Spanish, 10:00 am and 12:00 pm in English and 2:00 pm in Spanish.

Those Ordained to the Permanent Diaconate – The Diocese of Raleigh is very blessed to celebrate the ordina-tion yesterday on June 27, 2020 by Bishop Luis of the following new deacons, whose vocation it is to permanent-ly serve in that capacity as a deacon: Rick Keith Autry, Steven James Canali, Daniel Joseph Doban, George Fran-cis Keenan, Joshua Odel Klickman, Virgilio Maisonet, Gerardo Segundo Mercado Roman, John James Mullins, Arthur George Powers, Eric J. Rosario Ramos, Kevin Michael Sullivan, John Joseph Walsh, David Allen Wulff, Mat-thew Anthony Yurksaitis and Bernard Zdancewicz. Please join me in extending our prayers and best wishes to each of these as they begin their diaconal ministry in the various parishes to which they have been assigned.

Clear from sacred scripture and the Tradition of the first few centuries of the Church that the Office of Deacon was an important component in the pastoral and spiritual care of the faithful, especially with regard to care for the poor, those most in need, the imprisoned, the sick, as well as assisting at Mass and other liturgies with preaching and as the Celebrant for the Sacrament of Baptism, the Officiant for the Sacrament of Marriage and the presider for one or more components of a Funeral Liturgy.

The Necessity of Returning Thanks and Participating in the Mission – In some way, we are all reminded each and every day, just how much we have been blessed by Our Lord – much more than we deserve, if we step back and consider. How important it is then for all of us to prayerfully review how we are returning thanks to God on a regular basis through our stewardship of prayer, ministry and offering. Look at each of those closely as to how you are exercising them, even during these days of precaution – are you actively pursuing each aspect of stewardship or have these days been a vacation from Our Lord, Whose graces nonetheless have been yours, of-ten in quiet, providential moves in and through the gift of life with which you have been blessed?

Our Lord calls each of us, uniquely to participate in the mission He gives to us, beginning on the day we are baptized. Is your prayer just intentions for your inner circle or do you routinely add broader needs of others and situations in our country and throughout the world, for the Church and Her mission locally and abroad? What is your ministry; how are you using the abilities Our Lord has given you to assist others in their growth in faith, in holiness and in the assistance to those most in need? What is your offering of financial return to Our Lord? Have these days of precaution led to an increased focus on over consumerism, on-line or other-wise or has your reflection on how God provides, been an increasing focus? Do you support the mission of our parish or get caught in presumption, that others will do so and so thus your return to God and participation is not needed? Thus, reflect on how it is that you exercise your prayer, your ministry and your offering back to God for all He has done for you and in support of the mission entrusted to all of us.

Assistance with our Live Broadcast of Sunday Masses – As you know, since mid-March, we have been blessed to be able to continue to reach out to our parishioners and pilgrims to our Cathedral, virtually through our live broadcasts and videos via our new Cathedral You Tube Channel. The most important weekly installment are the 8:00 am Mass and the 10:00 am Mass, as ways in which our parish family can remain one in prayer, as well as do that for which we are known as a parish – through the gift of faith, share the hope and the joy we have in Christ. As this ministry is rapidly growing, I need your help in doing the technical side of this great work of evan-gelization – the literally, behind the scenes camera and video work. Training is provided. Pray about it and kind-ly contact our staff Director of Communications, Michelle Connors, at [email protected] for more information or refer to the parish website.

JUSTICE BULLETIN BOARD Blessed the people who know the joyful shout;

in the light of your countenance, O Lord, they walk. At your name they rejoice all the day,

and through your justice they are exalted. --Psalm 89:16-17

What does it mean to live in God and in justice? Such living involves what we do for the vulnerable and those in need. As I am writing this, it is the Monday morning following a weekend of nonviolent protests followed by violent rioting precipitated by the unjust killing of George Floyd. The effects of 400 years of hatred and ra-cial injustice against people of color--sometimes overt, sometimes covert, but definitely systemic in our Ameri-can society--boiled over in 111 cities this past weekend and continues.

What are we to do as a people of faith to overcome rac-ism? Fr. Bryan N. Massingale has just written a thought-provoking article, “The Assumptions of White Privilege and What We Can Do about It” (NCR On-line 6/1/2020) and offers some concrete actions that we can do as in-dividuals and as parishes.

Massingale writes, “To create a different world, we must learn how this one came to be. And unlearn what we previously took for granted. This means that we have to read. And learn from the perspectives of people of col-or.” He then suggests holding a parish series on race and racial issues for adults, in faith formation lessons, and in homilies beyond just Black History Month. He suggests writing our bishop to ask how anti-racism is part of our church leaders' formation for ministry, as well as in the formation of seminarians.

He quotes the words of St. Pope John Paul II who, on his final pastoral visit to the United States, summoned Catholics to "eradicate every form of racism" as part of their wholehearted and essential commitment to life. Finally, Massingale tells us to pray. “Yes, racism,” he states, “is a political issue and a social divide. But at its deepest level, racism is a soul sickness. It is a profound warping of the human spirit that enables human beings to create communities of callous indifference toward their darker sisters and brothers. Stripped to its core, white supremacy is a disturbing interior disease, a mal-formed consciousness that enables white people to not care for those who don't look like them.” So, I would add one other action: if you don’t have a Black American friend, seek a friendship through one of our outreach ministries.

(Radio Vaticano | Septiembre 26, 2014). ©LPi
