How to Become a Catholic

The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

The parish welcomes those seeking fuller participation in the life of the Church. RCIA is a program offered each year for the following people: Individuals who have never been baptized and who wish to be baptized and welcomed into the Catholic faith. Individuals who have been baptized in another Christian tradition and who wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Individuals who were baptized in the Catholic Church but never received first Holy Communion.

The first eleven weeks are considered an inquiry pe-riod with no formal commitment required, so all are welcome to register and come and see. If you or someone you know might be interested, please email Rosanne at [email protected] or call 207-985-6252.

To be held after both Masses

Holy Spirit-Prayer Shawl

Ministry meets monthly to knit/crochet and of-fer prayers over the shawls, so as to pass along personal peti-tions and intentions for the recipients. Join us on Wednes-day, February 21, at 11 AM in the down-stairs parlor at St. Mary’s. FMI, call Sue at 646-8217 or Verna at 646-4543.

GOSPEL MEDITATION February 18, 2018 - 1st Sunday of Lent Why do we always go to the desert? We see this example in Scripture time and time again. The Israelites wandered in the desert. King David and prophets were driven into the wilderness. Now Je-sus is in the same place. Lent after Lent, we too are invited into a barren, desolate place. Why do we always go to the desert? Throughout Scripture, the desert is a place of testing. It's also a place of hiding and withdrawal. In the Old Testament, David fled into the wilderness to hide from Saul, Elijah from Jezebel, and Jonah from God! In other words, the desert is a place of "retreat." In Christian circles, we use the word to describe a spiritual weekend away. Its meaning comes from warfare, however, as we well know. To retreat means to draw back, to separate oneself from the fighting. Of course, a military retreat brings its own kind of "battle" -- the internal assessment of why the fighting went so poorly. As we enter into this Lenten season, we are invited to retreat into the desert with Jesus. Attending a day or weekend of reflection is a wonderful spiritual practice. This "desert spirituality," however, can fill all 40 days. We can fulfill our Lenten resolutions with a purpose -- writing daily notes to family and friends can inspire new gratitude, every time we pass up that specific food item can be cause for intercession for deeper sufferings and privations of others. The Gospel tells us that "the Spirit drove him out into the desert." In other words, God wants us to be here. What feels uncomfortable is actually part of our spiritual journey. To be stretched, to be challenged, to confront our own areas of weakness -- these things are essential in our walk with God. This Lent, will you go to the desert?

I noticed that, in some languages, the period before Easter is called "forty days." Where did Lent get its name? Many names used in the church for prayers, feasts, and liturgies have in-teresting histories. History, language, and the adaptation of secular things for religious purposes often influenced how something got its name. Greek and Latin hold a primary, though not exclusive, influence. In the case of Lent, it was a combination of language and history that influenced its English name. The word Lent comes from the Middle English word

“Lenten,” which means spring, and it did not have any religious meaning. Since Easter was cele-brated in late spring, the time before it was designated as a time of preparation. Lent was not al-ways forty days, however. In the early church, it was just a few days, and was later extended to a few weeks. By the time of the Council of Nicaea, in 325, Lent was forty days, most likely because of the length of time that Jesus spent in the desert to prepare for his public ministry. The early Greek word for Lent meant forty days. It was then translated into Latin, and on to the Romance languages (derived from Latin): Italian, Spanish, French, etc. Spring's association with the time of Easter had a greater influence in our language, and the Middle English word “Lenten” became Lent as the time more connected to preparation before Easter. © 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc.

First Sunday of Lent

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will take place each Friday of Lent. Stations at St. Mary’s in Wells will be at 12 Noon, followed by a Lenten luncheon. Stations at St. Martha’s in Kennebunk will be at 6 PM, preceded by a Lenten supper at 5:30 PM.

Lent continues until the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday,

March 29.

Good Friday, March 30, is a day of fast and absti-nence (from meat) in the universal Church.

All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (from meat) in the Church in the United States.

The Law of Abstinence - Binds Catholics aged 14 and older.

The Law of Fasting - Binds Catholics aged 18 and over, until the beginning of their 60th year (through age 59).

CRS RICE BOWL

...is a way for Catholics to live

Lent. The program provides an

opportunity for us to live in

solidarity with our poorest and

most vulnerable brothers and

sisters through the three Lenten pillars of praying,

fasting, and almsgiving. When we put money in

our rice bowls, we are making a difference. What

we give for Lent might change lives! Rice bowls will

be available throughout most of the Lenten season.

PARISH LENTEN MISSION Our mission will take place on March 5, 6, & 7. It will be held in Wells after the 8 AM Mass,

and in Kennebunk at 6:30 PM. The three-day Mission offers us opportunities to feed our faith, to slow down, to help make Christ our focus, to provide examples for our children... It may also spiritually deepen our Lenten Sea-son! Our program, "Find and Live Your Mission", will be presented by Sheila Mur-phy. Sheila holds a Masters in Pastoral Minis-try from Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and a music degree from Marywood Universi-ty in PA. She has been serving in All Saints Parish in Brunswick, ME, since 2000, and has worked with Fr. Morse and Fr. Murphy. Her ministries have included Adult Ministry, Youth Ministry, Music Ministry, and teaching in the Parish School. She has also served in parishes in MA, PA, and CA. She is married to Deacon John Murphy and has two college-aged chil-dren. Sheila has a big heart for mission, both the kind for which we must leave home, and the kind to which we’re called in our daily lives. COME AND JOIN US!

LENTEN RESOURCES ON DIOCESAN WEBSITE The Diocese of Portland has a special section on its website with resources

to assist us during our Lenten journey. They include a Lenten calendar, faith formation and Scripture reflections, retreat information, ways to

share our gifts, and Lenten messages from Pope Francis. The site, www.portlanddiocese.org/lent-resources, will be updated throughout Lent.
